  1. Have now: Garmin GPS II Garmin GPS III Garmin GPS 18 PC Used to own: If you know anything about the above, you know I'm a cheap son-of-a-gun that would never get rid of anything Next GPS: Garmin GPSMAP 76Cx
  2. For those checking the version you're running, that's 6.11.5, not 6.1.15.
  3. Maybe you have start and stop locations that aren't precisely on a road, and the GPS thinks it might pick a different nearby starting road. Maybe you should try deleting all maps from the list, then selecting only the newest ones you have of each type(CN8, Topo etc). Actually, I wouldn't load any combination of Metroguide, CitySelect, and City Navigator that covered the same area. You could try a hard reset on the GPS, and making sure you have the latest version of MapSource and GPS software.
  4. MapSource is a trademark of Garmin, and almost all MapSource programs (if not all) will work on your Vista C, though some capbilities of some of them may not be available. You can check their published compatibility list at: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/# However most older maps that aren't listed, will also work. For instance, they don't list any old Roads & Rec maps, or Metro Guide North America (USA), but it can use them, just fine. GPS programs that aren't MapSource, or MapSource compatible, generally cannot download their MAPS to any Garmin GPSr, but can upload and download waypoints, routes, and tracks. If there's an unlisted program you're thinking about. Just list it here, and someone will let you know.
  5. Don't know if it's still true, but the last time I bought National Geographic software, their maps weren't as good as Maptech's, and neither was the program. I frequently use Maptech's, but haven't used NG's in years.
  6. Not the same thing, but my GPS IIIplus has been in the rain many times over many years, and submerged in salt water. No moisture or corrosion problem.
  7. I'm with briansnat and others. You can't beat a good GPS for doing GPS stuff.
  8. GeoBobC, I think your charger isn't designed for these high capacity batteries. I just received 12 2700 mAh Powerex batteries, 2 days ago. The four charged that day are now all at 1.60 V. The four charged yesterday area all at 1.65 V. The four charged about 8 hours ago are all at 1.70 V. None have been installed in anything. These voltages are higher than I've ever seen for NiMH batteries, but I've never had anything over 2300 mAh. My guess is that these batteries get some of their extra capacity by using a different chemistry, and your charger uses voltage to limit overcharge, so it isn't really charging them. These voltages are NOT wrong, though I did round them to 3 figures. I use a Beckman Tech 310 multimeter, intended to be usable for calibrating other meters.
  9. Do you guys put plastic shields on the UV or polarized filters you use to protect your camera lens? Serioiusly, I've been carrying my old GPS IIIplus in my pocket, and in with LOTS of other HARD junk in my laptop carrying case, for about 10 years, or however long ago they came out. Just checked the screen, and there's not a scratch on it.
  10. Don't expect rolling your own topo maps to be anywhere near easy. There are forums donated to getting through the hassel. Start with the "Mapsource Topo or City Navigator " thread on this forum.
