  1. On Ebay. Item #194088175. 34 units available. Buy It Now for $399.99. NEW not refurbished. I have no connection with either Ebay or this seller other than I like to spread the word when a good deal comes along to the GC community. And besides I already own this wonderful unit even tho I paid 20% more some months ago. Good luck!!!!!! Chux
  2. For $165.00 on Buy It Now. 25 units available. Item # 194165436. Newly "overhauled" by Garmin and with the FULL factory warranty. Whatta buy, huh??
  3. That's a bummer! This is the first board I've posted on that doesn't have it's own image server. I'd be willing to bet there'd be MANY more pics displayed in threads if such services were available. It would be considerably easier too then uploading to some other server then linking to it (imho). O.K. thanks everyone!! Chux
  4. So then, I have to have them hosted somewhere?? There's no server here to upload to?? Thanks again!! Chux
  5. like it is at the geocaching website?? I have posted some pics on the benchmark page of ones that I've found. You log the find then go back and add pics after completeing the log. Is it like that here too?? Or just how do you add an image to a post here?? Thanks!! Chux
  6. Try www.offroute.com They have good prices as well and a great selection.
  7. Centaur is correct. You have to go to the Garmin website and use your registration code to get another unlock code. I just went through the same thing putting the City Select program that came with the GPS V, into my new Legend. BIG mistake, for even tho I got it to work, the auto mapping feature of City Select makes the maps a much larger file to save and with only 8 megs to start off with in the Legend....not good. However I just purchased the Roads & Recreation cd and loaded those maps into the Legend and WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT!! The same map that would typically be 2 megs on the City Select is less than 1 meg (app) with the Roads & Rec cd so I can get most of Washington in the Legend now. If you want a BIG improvement in your eTrex, get the R & R cd, especially for geocaching. You won't be sorry. Good luck, Chux
  8. I agree with everything said about the Garmin GPS V. My girlfriend brought one home a few weeks ago and gave it to me to "check it out, figure it out, then tell me how to do it". I made the mistake of getting into the manual BEFORE turning the unit on for the first time and seriously thought that for a woman who hates maps, this ain't no piece of cake either. But after turning on the unit and driving around...wow!! The first time I saw the unit start spitting out the street names before you got there, along with the direction, speed of travel and all of that I knew this was a true "magic box". Anyway, the point here is that it is a QUALITY unit that works great for the car or, take it out, go from Landscape to the Portrait mode and use the thing as a hand held. With it's external antenna and large backlit screen even us guys that wear glasses had no problems seeing this one. But most importantly, it's a BREEZE to learn and use. Just use the quick start guide and leave that manual closed for awhile, then just play around with with your new unit. While some say they have an adequet manual, I find the training video a better way to start. In closing, I've seen the unit on Ebay for $410 so if you shop around you'll save yourself some dough. While it may be a tad bit steep, STILL for a quality dual use unit (that you can see), there isn't anything better imho. Good luck!! Chux
  9. Hi From one newbie to another, and in addition to geospotters wise words, may I suggest simply to do like you're doing and use this great resource here to help answer your questions. I asked a similar question about my new Legend and felt that the Roads & Rec seemed to get the nod on that thread, at least as far as geocaching goes, but that's probably arguable. About 2 weeks ago I only had a hint about anything to do with a GPS and never owned or even used one. Geocaching? What's that? I can thank my girlfriend who came home with a Garmin GPS V and asked me to "check it out, see if you can get it to work and then clue me in on how to use it". Oh boy, I thought. What a gadget!! But to make a long story short, I just purchased a Legend and now have one (in the family) that can drive us there then I can take the Legend and finish the job. I've found a couple of benchmarks and a cache here locally too. But I think the neatest thing is seeing some of my friends eyes light up when they see what these things can really do. I guess I'm the guy that finally explained it to them. I wonder, you think there's a referal plan out there somewhere?? Good luck!! Chux
  10. Hi everyone! FOR THE RECORD.... The City Select cd that is included in the GPS V Deluxe package WILL work with other Garmin units. BUT you'll have to go to the Garmin website as mentioned by peter, use your registration code and then proceed to unlock the program for your other Garmin GPS unit. It is also correct in that the cd can be used in 2 different Garmin units. After that, I guess you buy another unlock code. Anyway, after all of this, I got the map into the Legend and it works great. The Roads & Rec cd is also still on the way Good luck!! Chux
  11. Thanks everyone!! That figures....soon as I order something I find out what I had would have worked. Does it make any difference that the unlock code for ALL of this cd was included with the V? But I need another for it to work with the Legend? So on the website am I applying for a first one or a second one? Man, this is confusing!!! Anyway, I've decided on the Roads and Recreation cd and have it on the way from Offroute. But I remember this was PRECISELY the reason I didn't buy the Magellen Meridian was because of having to purchase the map cd "on the side". I think if I would have known all of this before making what I thought was a well reasoned decision to buy another Garmin product because I already owned one, liked it a lot and also had a MapSource program, I would have bought the Megellan, which was my first choice for geocaching & hiking after reading the opinions around here, to begin with. Isn't it funny how things work out sometimes through no real fault of your own?? Such is destiny I guess. [This message was edited by Chux on November 23, 2002 at 01:57 AM.]
  12. Hi Since my girlfriend took back her Garmin GPS V to help her find the many schools in multiple districts she works at as a substitute teacher, I went ahead and bought a Legend, my thinking was that I could use the City Select cd that came with the GPS V and load that into my new Legend which would be good for geocaching. After updating the software at Garmin.com I went to upload the City Select maps that I wanted (about 7 megs) & one thing that pissed me off right off the bat was getting a message that I didn't have the unlock codes for the map program for THIS unit but to upload your selected maps anyway, click O.K. Excuse me, that's MY cd that I ALREADY bought. I SHOULD be able to put it where I want, it would seem to me. Alright so far, next problem to arise is a message that states something to the effect that the cd you're using has an autoroute feature that's NOT supported by your unit. To turn off this feature check your preferences. O.K. I checked em, found the auto routing tab but I NEVER did find out how to turn the dammed thing off. It will upload anyway, which it did, completes and gives the upload sucessful message sign there at the end. Now when I take the unit and start it up fresh it comes back up with the "stock" map that came with the unit. What happened to the maps I just uploaded??? So I've ALMOST come to the conclusion that I will be buying an aftermarket map program to be able to upload a map on my Legend. As I mostly do the geocaching/benchmark/hiking routine, I REALLY LIKED THE GPS V's ability to zoom right in on the local roads (which brings up another point, when I zoom in on the Legend, there's no roads (of course not, it's the stock map), where the V shows ALL of em. I guess I got spoiled using that one, huh?). What map program would you guys suggest installing into my new Legend?? I know nothing about topo maps but detailed local info is a MUST. Thanks again!! Chux
  13. Hello everyone!! Recently my girlfriend bought herself a Garmin GPS V to help her find numerous schools in multiple districts where she works as a substitute teacher. Of course I, with NO previous GPS experience of anykind, get the task of "checking it out, make it work then tell me how to use it" routine from a good hearted women who HATES anything to do with maps (When I told her years ago to simply think of UP being north, down being south etc on a map you could see that IT finally connected but we don't talk about THAT much anymore ). Which I did in a couple of hours of manual time then on the road with it. AMAZING!! I must say. It didn't take long to see the many uses of this thing and after checking it out here and other places on the web, I see that she did GOOD, she bought a great unit for knowing nothing about them, if I do say so myself, for the money spent ($469.00 from BestBuy). Comparing it to my digital camera, the GPS units REALLY are "magic boxes", this one included. I hooked it up to the PC via the included PC cable and even loaded and unlocked the entire MapSource cd onto my computer and transfered some maps of the area into the unit with no problems. Again...AMAZING!! It didn't take long to find fault with the MapSource City Select cd however in that, for one thing, you can't filter the list of businesses or attractions in any way so when they show ALL of em show. Not really desirable when all you're looking for is the schools in the area or whatever. I forwarded a couple of suggestions to Garmin where they replied with nice courteous thank you's. Great! But after looking this program over I still can't figure out how to simply make a waypoint by entering the coordinates given. Anyone know how to add a waypoint using the MapSource City Select cd on your computer by just entering the desired coordinates?? Can that be done or am I missing something here? If it can't, besides "hunting & pecking" with the cursor, there's no way to make a waypoint by simply by using & adding the coordinates somehow??? WTH??? Anyway, thanks for any help!! chuxtuff
  14. Found it!! It was, in fact, the very program (Smasher) I mentioned that wasn't allowing the descriptions to be viewed for some reason. So I either reconfigure or disable it when I'm here. I disabled the dammed thing and everything loads on the page like it's supposed to. Anyway, I knew it was on my end, I just had to what I do when out in the field and think about it. Thanks everyone!! chux
  15. Thanks for checking!! I saw another one that wouldn't come up either but most of em do. If I woulda known about the description on my first hunt (Electrifying) I would have found it with a few minutes, but the description wasn't visible on that one either. So it took me longer. Why wouldn't it show however when I just simply went to the geocaching website without logging in and just bring it up?? My browser is purged of all cookies and the like when I close IE automatically thanks to the purchase of a cookie purger/cleaner. Why does the description show momentarily when I reload the page but then disappear when it's done loading?? Something's fishy here. Thanks!! Chux
  16. or when I just go to the geocaching.com homepage and search for caches in my area and click on my cache, I don't see any of the description for the cache I wrote included on that page when it comes up. The name of my cache is The Giant, the Island and the Monument and it's in Washington state. I didn't use any html cause I don't quite have that figured out yet. But I see descriptions in everyone elses cache description. How come I don't see that in mine?? I can edit it fine but I still don't see it except for there. What gives? Thanks!!
