  1. REI in San Francisco had the Triton 300 on display and had a couple in the back (last Saturday). I asked to see the display model as well as the packaging. It runs on 2 AA and comes with a USB cable. It looks pretty nice. I had a eXplorist 500 which I liked very well.
  2. I went to REI in San Francisco today and they had the Magellan Triton 300 on display. It uses 2 AA batteries. Also it comes with a CD and a cable which has 6 pins on one end and a USB on the other. I assume it is similar in functionality as the eXplorist USB cable (power, file transfer, and NMEA serial). I don't think you need to buy an AC adapter because it probably won't charge the AA batteries. You should get rechargable AAs and a battery charger instead. The screen looks really nice and it seems very, very quick on map zooming/panning.
  3. I just bound a new eXplorist 210 from REI for $59.83 and the firmware says: 2007 Magellan Rev 3.1.88 Apr 17 2007 I can't seem to update to 3.2.57.
  4. Thanks.... I just bought the 2007 Milepost and want to supplement the drive with real time GPS coordinates. Seems like hooking the GPS to the laptop while running Microsoft Streets and Trips is the way to go...... (for maps and directions) Any use Mapsend Canada Topo?? Is there any Magellan TOPO software for Alaska..... like Denali????
  5. I have a Magellan Explorist 500 and Mapsend Topo USA 3D which I think is very good. I am planning on driving from California through Banff/Jasper to Alaska.....going on the Alaska Canada Highway (Dawson Creek Whitehorse, Tok, Fairbanks). There are two software which I know will work with the Magellan Explorist 500: Mapsend Topo Canada and Direct Route North America 2.0. 1: Is the Mapsend Topo Canada 3D good? 2: Does the Direct Route North America cover roads (town roads) in British Columbia and Yukon Canada as well as Alaska? 3: Any other GPS software you can recommend for this road trip .... (not geocaching).... The Mapsend Topo USA 3D does NOT cover Alaska....(shouldn't it be called Mapsend Topo USA except Alaska).... Anyone using either Direct Route or Mapsend Topo Canada can check if town roads exist on the map for say Whitehorse Yukon, Haines Junction or Dawson Creek, BC. Thanks.... I only want to buy one of them. (Or none and just use my Microsoft Streets and trips....)
  6. I updated my North American eXplorist 500 (non LE) using a iMac running XP under Boot Camp. The North American base map was unaffected. Only thing is that I default preference is meters not feet.
  7. I have a eXplorist 500 North America edition (LI-Ion battery, not the LE AAA version).... I would like to up grade from 2.03 to 2.57. Has anyone tried it on a NA edition eXplorist 500? Did you save your base map first? What about the new NMEA/serial cable mentioned as an option?
  8. If you are selling your Explorist 400 along with the original Mapsend software which is already registered to the Explorist 400 serial number, the new owner should be able to install the software with the Mapsend CDs on the new computer. If you're buying a new Explorist 600 and want to use the Mapsend software which was registered to Explorist 400, then the previous post says you have 1 more try. If you're not selling Mapsend with your the Explorist 400, the new owner can buy new copies of Mapsend and won't have any problems registering new Mapsend with the Explorist 400 serial number. Only time there will be a problem is if you're selling the Explorist 400 with Mapsend CDs and still wanting to use the same software with your new Explorist 600.
  9. I had a problem reading the 3rd disk on my CD-RW, but was able to read it using a DVD-ROM drive.
  10. I'm planning on driving to Zion and Bryce (from Calif) and have an Explorist 500 with Mapsend TOPO3D loaded on my PC. When I plan a Waypoint route in Mapsend TOPO3D, the lines are straight and I am limited to 30 waypoints per route. I know Explorist tracks can have 2000 points, is there a way to create a track so that the route follows the road better than the route created by connecting the 30 Waypoints with straight lines? (Arc-ing to follow the road). I have Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 also... is there a way to create a Magellan TRACK from the route planner in Streets and Trips 2006 so I can just convert and upload to my Explorist? Is there any software which will take the MS Street and Trips '06 route and convert it to tracks (or waypoint route) so I can convert and upload it on the Explorist?
  11. Hello, (newbie here).... I have a Magellan Explorist 500 and Topo3D USA loaded on my PC... I download some trail routes for Bryce and Zion from: http://www.outdooreyes.com/sitemap.php3 and the txt files are WGS84 data, such below.... How do I look at this data in TOPO3D .... I figure once it is in TOPO3D I can easily export the data to my Explorist 500 using Magellan Conversion Manager... Anyone seen this kind of data? 12. I looked at /var/log/system.log and noticed that when I plugged in the Explorist 500 into my iBook this appears: kernel[0]: AppleUSBCDCACMData: Version number - 3.1.9, Input buffers 8, Output buffers 16 So I guess you're right that CDC ACM is turned on in OS X 10.4 The Magellan Explorist appears as a USB Modem device.... under the System Profile, so I'm not sure how it becomes a normal serial device with a COM PORT (or whatever the unix equivalent is). I also have Bluetooth and it is selectable as a GPSr under Route66, but not the Explorist.
  13. Hello, Just bought my first GPSr (Magellan Explorist 500 with TOPO 3D NA). I'm planning on using it for day hikes and hook it up to the computer for driving directions .... EITHER with MS Streets and Trips on an very old WinXP laptop or with Route 66 on my Apple Mac iBook G4. Here are my questions: 1) How do usually carry it while hiking around? around your neck (lanyard), in your hand (wrist strap), on your waist (clip case or fanny pack), back pack (inside top/cellphone pocket, hanging outside back pack loop? 2) The Explorist 500 works fine with WinXP (file transfer mode/NMEA 2.1) as well as SD card.....BUT for MAC OS X 10.4 I can't get Route 66 (program to recognize it). On OS X File Transfer mode is fine BUT NMEA mode the following gets created: /dev/cu.usbmodem3B11 and I can cat the output from this device. I think OS X 10.4 is missing the USB CDC ACM drivers. I found some stuff at Darwin APPLEUSBCDCiokit stuff.... but don't know enough of OS X to compile/install them. Anyone gotten further?
