    Mission Completed!

I have been good, done what I should

I've waited long (it was so hard!)

    To open my Mission tonight!

I want to thank We4Fullers so very much for the lovely Mission which they sent to me. It was very meaningful, too. The first thing I saw was a Sevigny Ribbon box. I have known this since I was a child - it was my Dad's favorite, but it had to be Sevigny because they made the thin style. (Started in 1926 Sevigny was based in Brockton, MA [next to Easton where I grew up], was bought by F.B. Washburn in 1986 who ran them as a division until they sold out in 2017),

Thanks for the lovely coins, so inventivePath Tags, the fantastic ornament (cute!) and the thoughtful card. You made tonight very special!

To all those participating in the Happy Holidays Mission like I am, and eagerly awaiting a package to arrive....The USPS is working hard to get those packages through!  I know, because I've worked at the USPS for 25 years.  If you mailed your package to save money and shipped it out as ground shipping or retail ground, or worst of all - Media Mail, it will take 3 to 4 weeks for delivery and sometimes longer for those processing plants in Cincy, Chicago and Detroit that are hit hard with COVID.  If you want it to get where it's going quickly, within the USA, then priority would be the way to go.  Please keep in mind, that the USPS processes FED EX mail (we process some of their mail and the trade-off is that they fly our mail for us) and we also process UPS mail.  Fed Ex and UPS have limited their customers to only sending out so many packages  per day, leaving the postal service to pick up the pieces because we do not limit our customers.   I know that I am personally working hard at processing YOUR packages in a timely fashion.  I am also the person that seeks out 'lost' or delayed packages within our system.

Happy Holidays everyone, and may we all meet at a Mega Event somewhere, anywhere! this year!

I remember when we used to do parentheses or bracket "hugs" in chat. If appropriate, consider them given. Dear Postal Person: You are appreciated! And you can add Nashville to the area plants hit hard by Covid.

Can't wait to open mine on Christmas Eve...still waiting (grits teeth).

Now that's better.  Next time you should renew faster. How about on the 27th?

There's no Automatic Renewal or even a renewal notice sent out in KY: they want to catch you expired and get the Big bucks ?

I find a red marker and a pencil work better...not getting caught helps too, but that's hard when driving a sleigh pulled by reindeer and filled with sacks of gifts about town. Best is knowing the judges from THEIR side of the bench. You can get a ticket for reindeer poop "dropped", too I have found ?

Well, I didn't have to ship overseas...and I included a note relating how much my Stocking meant to me as a child and that I hoped to carry a bit of that joy over to them. Do I have to apologize?

  7. First, a great 'Thank You!' to my Mission Partner who sent to me - real name R.F. from Bugsie Siegel's city. This gave a much needed boost as My Dear Bethie_Biker fell on Monday and shattered the crown of her tibia. She's doing well under medication with surgery next Wednesday. I'm hoping my fused spine can continue to be a "human crane" getting her up and down for necessities. Box came in great condition, and I will be reserving opening for Xmas Eve. I'll post pictures then

Second, an apology to the partner to whom I'm sending in AZ - not that I did anything wrong, but I asked my local Post Office why my 3 Day Service package hadn't gone beyond Nashville, TN in a week (I'm in KY 85 miles away driving distance). It appears that Nashville (which clears for this region) is understaffed due to Covid-19. They state that it is sometimes taking up to a month for mail to run in some areas. All mail (even their vaunted 'Express') is affected. So, your package will get there, but even USPS can't say when. Very sorry, but Keep the Faith: Signal will  find a way, I am sure!

I bet there was much joy at the LaTour house last night ? (and the smell of spreadsheets heating up in preparation!) So glad that I could be here - thank you so much, in advance, for all the work you'll put in. Good on Barry for being Last In!

  10. I didn't know if I was going to be able to participate in this years' Happy Holiday Mission - and with all the Podcast hoopla, I'd have dearly missed it! I haven't had a temperature for 2 days from Covid-19, although I have been (and am - no, not mad but...) weak. And I've slept enough for a bear, but I am looking forward to this!!

But in your post that I was directly replying to (and quoted) you said

and my post was a direct response to that where I pointed out that in the past rhetoric, very similar to that being expressed here, actually resulted in a complete rethink and a U-turn by Groundspeak.

Other than that the only point you've made is that "Groundspeak own Geocaching and they can do what the want with it and we shouldn't complain or criticise" - We all know that ultimately they can do what they want with it, but we should complain if we disagree with the direction they're taking, otherwise they could end up making a bad call and ostracizing their paying customers which might hit their bottom line.

"Missed" the main point of another post, didn't you? Nah - you didn't miss it, you pivoted. If you're going to make statements and attempt to attribute them to another person, kindly have the wherewithal to support your actions. What you do is seen to be done, and BTW, you are not a "we" nor do you speak for anyone but yourself. But after 50 years of handling such I know when I'm going to be wasting my time pursuing anything further.

That said - Happy Halloween. I'm off. ???

  12. (BWOO- HA-HA-HAAAAAAA!)

    Happy Hallowee!

The Great Pumpkin nodded to us that we could open our Missions - and we are both so happy  with what the Pumpkin's helpers have sent us! Many thanks to Phoebe and Team Bear-Cat from me and Bethie_Biker, we both absolutely love our surprises! Many thanks to 'The Good Witches' for making all deliveries (at least as known) on time. Thanks to all who posted for making Beth's and my experience so enjoyable.

And last, but not least, a huge Thank You to GeoCharmer81 without whom this could not have happened. I have an idea of just how much work a Mission Controller does - it is appreciated !

A note: The Geocaching Podcast, next Wednesday (November4, 2020) at 8:30 Central Standard Time on YouTube, Facebook and other podcast venues, will be having their LIVE show all about Coin Exchange Missions - and 'The Good Witches' have cackled to me that we all might recognize their Guest as someone who runs Missions...???  So if you can, be sure to tune in!

And now, our Mission Goodies !! ?

  13. Bethie_Biker and I will join Laval K-9 (in spirit, pun intended) in opening the Missions tomorrow and posting pictures of the goodies! Today was the local substitute for Halloween: a drive-through that featured 6 foot long tubes with candy slid into cars. It didn't go off well, and Face Book recorded that parents were angry over children that got disappointed.

That made me remember what Halloween was like for me as a child in New England: a crisp fall night filled with shrieking, laughing, running kids - ganging up to doors to yell, 'Trick or Treat!' Goblins and witches and Barbies (oh! the scary Barbies!!!) rampant on the streets. Not this year, or most any year, anymore, for the kids of today.

But here in the Missions we have a Geocaching Halloween. A remembrance and sharing where adults can be a bit of the child they once were again. And I'm thankful.

Well it was you who brought up the fact that they define what Geocaching is, I was just pointing you to how that definition doesn't cover ALs.

And yes I (and others) have told them that it's not - that's what this very thread is doing, and many other threads have done it in a more direct way.

If you expect me to mail Bryan, well that's not going to happen, there is a platform to  feedback on Geocaching - it's these forums. I don't know whether Bryan reads the forums (I know Jeremy used to)  or whether the  concerns expressed in here are fed back to him but I would hope they are, and I hope they're listening to those concerns.

You seem to see Bryan as some sort of Kim Jong-Un character, and us mere mortals shouldn't dare to question the Dear Leader, or criticise the state!

Feedback through the forums got Geocaching Challenges abandoned years ago, I don't expect that to happen with ALs, and in fact I don't want them to be abandoned as I think they have some merit and a place in the game.  I  think Groundspeak haven't done a very good job with them, but with some tweaks they would be more wildely accepted.

I've said elsewhere I think they need to:

    • Fully integrate them, so they count on all the stats etc.
    • Include them on all the filters/searches/maps/PQs  as are all  other caches.
    • Bring their stats in line with other caches - 1 AL=1find.
    • Allow 3rd parties to provide a player app.

    Or:

    • Keep them completely separate from the main game (like Waymarking)

...I'm trying to understand how directly addressing nothing that I posted is an answer. And where I made any, ANY, inference (let alone statement) that Bryan Roth was somehow nefarious? What do you have against Bryan?

But I will suggest that you listen to Bryan's podcast appearances where he has spoken on this topic. You might be enlightened!

  15. 3 hours ago, MartyBartfast said:

    Indeed, and here's their definition:

    Doh!

Well, gee. Marty - so if Groundspeak, through their wholly-owned entity Geocaching® counts a construct as a cache YOU are going to tell them it's not? Especially when 'no decision made regarding one geocache is binding on any other' - the Great exception that has allowed Groundspeak/Geocaching to do literally ANYTHING since Day 1?

Can I be a fly on the wall (or cc'd on the email you send) to inform Bryan Roth of that?? Hmmm??

Rhetoric will get you nowhere. But it's fun to watch folks try that again, and again, and again - as if rhetoric mattered ? I think a "Doh!" here is appropriate. ?

At least you have the good taste to appreciate Danny Kaye - I wonder if you're familiar with his recordings?

1 hour ago, The Jester said:

And you ignored the final part of the definition (which is where AL's "lose" to Geocaches):  "and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location".  Yes, they share some characteristics, but that doesn't make them geocaches.

    Please see above ?

  16. I love how many different posters have defined what is, and what is not, Geocaching® to their hearts desire - and in so many different ways. And, yes - I put that Registered Trademark in for a reason: Geocaching is defined by Groundspeak, period. Bryan Roth has stated that A.L.'s are coming into the main app in its' next iteration. So, like them, don't like them, do them, don't do them - they aren't going away no matter what you personally may think of them.

On the subject of non-physical caches there is a long history of Groundspeak maintaining a presence, and even promulgating different types. At some point it may represent another Revenue Stream for them, or maybe not, but the continued interest of the Corporation is there to be seen. They have had several iterations and still don't kill the idea. Personally, I like A.L.'s a lot better than trackables, and a lot less than placing or finding a physical cache, going to an Event or watching my best Geocaching friend (who has 10,000+) learn to relax when he goes caching with Bethie_Biker and me, and even get a good meal while caching. We're still dubbing at less then 3K finds - but it's OK. Geocaching® is one place where you can take whatever you want and leave the rest without suffering at all, or taking a single thing away from anyone else.
