    Suggest you read this:

    https://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/performance/accuracy/

I have abstracted two paragraphs of interest:

"For example, GPS-enabled smartphones are typically accurate to within a 4.9 m (16 ft.) radius under open sky However, their accuracy worsens near buildings, bridges, and trees.

High-end users boost GPS accuracy with dual-frequency receivers and/or augmentation systems. These can enable real-time positioning within a few centimeters, and long-term measurements at the millimeter level."

    (my bolding)

"Using two GPS frequencies improves accuracy by correcting signal distortions caused by Earth's atmosphere. Dual-frequency GPS equipment is commercially available for civilian use, but its cost and size has limited it to professional applications."

So, yes, your hand-held GPSr or smartphone is limited to +/- 4 m in good conditions. But those high end systems have been in use for surveying for some time now.    When you are laying out roads, bridges and housing developments you need a lot better accuracy than +/- 4 m.

You've just quoted GLONASS (GNSS) specification and averaging (augmentation) - you do realize this, right? 😎 I don't think we're arguing anything different, but I do think I have it right as I stated it.😁

Here we go.... look at all the stuff Jimrky sent me.

I really like the geocoin and the travel tag. Also included were the pathtag, the bison and the magnet caches, a wide variety of logbooks, candy and trinkets.

My furry companions were happy too. It was easier to take a picture with Jake on a stay than it was with Mystic who is always on the move

Thanks Jim, you really spoiled me

Thanks also to GeoCharmer81 for hosting this spooky event

Leica can overcome this, because the 3 m is not inherent in the system.  Multiband, differential and CORS GPS systems can do better.  The one pictured above costs about 15,000 dollars and takes about a minute to get the displayed accuracy.

Yes GLONASS and GALILEO can do better, but GPS tops out at about +/- 10 ft per all sources that I can access. Averaging attempts to give better results but is an overlay not an access of greater accuracy. If you have a source stating that GPS systemic accuracy is better than +/- 10 ft  I'd appreciate a citation so that I can access it, thanks 😁

GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO are all different systems commonly lumped under "GPS". GPS, the US Civilian system, has a positional accuracy of +/- 10 feet, inherent. If Leica can overcome this, systemic, inaccuracy everyone should have one 😎

  8. Late to the discussion but here 😎 I wouldn't try to ship your empties to anyone - even in your home country - as has been said, freight is expensive. Regarding the containers, themselves - It Strictly Depends On The Container. I have medicine vials that HAVE round, self-sealing ridges under the caps, and I have those which do not. Ditto for Child-proof/non in one lid. If it has a self-sealing ridge, it's probably waterproof - if not NO WAY.

And a closed, properly sized ziplock (of good mil thickness) - with the seal NOT folded, and so compromised - will keep ANY log dry.

Better still, always use Rite-in-the-Rain paper or logs made from it - that way even if wet they can be pressed dry enough on a pants leg to sign 😎

  9. Let me preface this with saying that Bethie_Biker (for the First Time Ever) will post her own reply: we were both just so b l o w n  a w a y  with the generosity of our Mission Partners.

Halloween (yesterday) was hectic - we actually had Trick-or-Treaters for the first time in years...well, we were home for the first time in years and out of Covid 😁 - and we had to square away a slew of optional donations for the vets from GC8MAMA on Saturday - got a carload (literally).

Many, m a n y thanks to my Mission Partner, kini_ont for a lovely package so Chock Full of coins and Path Tags (!!) I was one smiling Geocacher last night (after the kids stopped coming) I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves - such beautiful coins! Such great Path Tags! Were I to compare them I'd be here saying, "Oh! My GeoCoins - Oh! My PathTags!" [yes, I'd become 'The Geocacher of Venice'...and Shakespeare never had it so bad 😁]

  20. Quote Unit473L: "If I can buy a standard TB for AUD$9 (average price to get one shipped here in northern Australia) and it's going to cost me $10 or more to make the proxy, then I may as well just send out the original TB. "

Ah! Location, Location, Location? In the US we can get aluminum disks for about $0.40USD each in small quantity (plastic just 1/4 the price). I would have thought your proximity to China might produce lower prices for you, but I am NO expert on Australian import duties and fees, nor freight or for that matter market prices (the only time I send something to a friend in Oz it took 3 months to get there!). Likewise on the label stock. Here I could make custom printed items such as this for less than $0.50USD  apiece all materials (landed costs) considered in small quantity.

Sorry it doesn't work the same for you

  21. I think what you're doing is great! But a couple of things stood out for me: wood and paper. I realize that you want to keep costs down, but why deal with inherently porous materials? You could - only suggestions - use a plastic disk - like a poker chip, or more costly an aluminum disk. And there are water resistant and water-proof label materials suitable for (especially) laser printers. Worst come to worst you glue a printed waterproof material onto aluminum with something like contact cement and have nothing to soak up water and no further steps.

    What do you think?

Neither says anything tangible about how the cross-platform experience has been improved. HQ's announcement mostly speaks about the technical reasons why they are doing this, nothing about cross-platform and no significant improvements of experience.

Hmmm...Have you ever heard of the term "sarcasm"? You might consider my posts in that light. Now do you feel a little foolish? I know I would were I to be you.

I'm pretty sure improving it doesn't mean messing up the experience for desktop users so it gets as bad as for mobile users though. And if I've understood the previous posts right, mobile users are not happy about the changes either.

Follow it back to the original post. I'm sure you'll get the gist. And if not...well, what's life without a little mystery? ?
