  1. when people post an "i am quitting" it is usually a cry for help. if you read this whole thread.. you will find "we" are surrounded by more good people than bad. "we" try to do more good than bad. it is a shame you are deciding to leave..... if your passion is that strong.. lobby for the good!! robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 3. we are about to place a cache, and the spot we chose has just been used. we decided to hide the cache in the same park.. a reasonable distance away. i have heard a few distance requirements, but would like to know the norm. i heard a 1/4 mile.. but this newest one was placed within 600 ft of another. what is the rule?? do any of you like the fact that there are multiple cache in one park setting.. with legal easy parking. being a family of cachers we look for this type of area. just curious. robbie feel free to markwell the heck out of this thread if it has been thoroughly discussed already. 6. quote: I've heard tell of police liking geocaches for two reasons. 1) GPS training and usage practice. 2) Geocachers all over the place (ie honest citizens) means less riff-raff all over the place. Plus we are more likely to see things. i like the fact that "good" people are running around in the woods. decent people that will make a call if needed. quote: First: I can't believe the Police have nothing better to do but take caches. Where I live, 5 miles away, the police only come if there are shots fired. where i work we are more concerned with violent crime, because that is our norm. in a dept where there is little to no crime.. they focus on what they can find. PVE may not really be a high crime area lol. good luck at any rate. i work south of 58th street in manhattan NY, and you are welcome to place as many caches as you would like in my area!!!! -----robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 7. i use a black diamond moonlight here as a LED hea1dlamp. 4 LEDS, 3 brightness settings on low it will last 170 hours on 3 AAA batts. on high 70 hours. lightweight, and built nice. for lots of light.. look into halogen, krypton/led combos. try them out. look at the settings, and functions on them. you want to be able to switch to 1 led or 2 leds if your batteries go dim. that way you will always have light. always carry a decent pack light too. led flashlights and lithium lights are a good source of backup light. i also carry a military strobe. 20$ if you look for it.. in case!! -----robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 8. i recvd the replacement unit today. possibly refurbished. possibly new. screen is clean and clear. case looks clean. i can see where the screws are already stressed though. i will not be relying on waterproof standard even for light rain. this unit will be carried in a waterproof cell phone bag.. one of the better ones. i am curious how many people have noticed stress cracks on their sportraks. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 9. quote: This is the smaller version of the popular PS3 battery charger. It chargers 4 batteries at once and will charge AA and AAA batteries. This "smart" battery charger will charge Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride and rechargeable alkaline batteries. nimh ronin. i would prefer it had a switch to setting, but states it is ok. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 11. i told the guy to do a search for sportrak and cracks. i don't know if he understood what i was saying, it sounded as if there was no question as to what was wrong with my reciever when they called back. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 12. i spoke with a very nice man at Thales navigation, and i am pleased with the results so far. they authorized a fast replacement... they send new unit and then i return old unit. i asked if i get a new or reconditioned unit, and he stated he requested a new unit. i just want a working one.. so we'll see. i informed him that this is a common problem now, and he stated that they are not all aware of it, and will forward all info to engineering.. (scotty??) anywho.. i am pleased so far. i will be caching, and using my sportrak while i await my new one!! bonus. chalk up big brownie points for thales (magellan) navigation!!!! huge points!! now fix the problem!!! lol ---- robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 13. called magellan 630pacific time and they are having a supervisor call me back. i may have good news for those that have the ST and cracks. i'll post more later. i too cannot lose the mapping capability for 2-3 weeks. i have become dependant on it. i may buy a unit for my wife also. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 16. i always bang a stump or rock before expoling it, and my wife always chuckles. this past tuesday, while doing down by the river cache in pond eddy NY on the delaware i did just that.. banged the log and got a hisss in return. i left it be for a minute and got the cache out by using a stick. when i returned the cache the same creature gave me a god aweful warning hisssss again. be careful with stumps and rocks. on the wheelin and dealin cache in PA, Milrift on the delaware my daughter (7) stumbled into a snake on a rock staircaise. it was sunning and more stunned than her. she says it was 10 feet long and huge with red eyes. my wife saw it and said 3+ feet a nd black. i did not get a look, but a previous cacher took a photo of one similar. this is from a prev visitor, and this is what she saw. never saw those markings before.. what is it??? i say watersnake. ??? 17. look at these cracks. never opened, never tightened. i have faith in magellans service and will not bad mouth them, but this is a problem. i loaded all my data for a trip and fishing for a week. day two noticed condensation in screen area.. not dunked, but took spray from boat.. had cover on. took batteries out and dried unit overnight. then next day noticed bad condensation and unit shut it self off.. didn't come on until day 5. now this is what i see... friggin lines.. 2 of them down the screen. at least it works for now. i will call customer svc and see what they do. i hope for the best. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 18. quote: I did win the 600 yard slow-fire event yesterday, so it wasn't a total loss! the big or the little .30? (300WM or 308) just curious? 300WM almost created a skip in my trigger pull until i matured with it. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 19. print out the front page of geocaching.com, and carry that. the cache letter is a good carry also. a simple explanation will almost always satisfy a PO that is conducting an investigation. ignoring a PO that is investigating a "suspicious person" might wreck your day. that would be like erasing the fine line between genious and insanity. of course if you feel oppressed or harassed.. try the method SuperAlpha suggested. let me know how it works out. good luck. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 21. i have found that i like the beads more than rely on them. a good pace count takes a while to feel out, but a rough guesstimate comes together quickly. i feel the beads gave me something to measure and help make a mental note. in response.. some people like to rough it to a spot, terrain assoc, compass orient, trail walk, etc and then use GPSr to walk in to final spot. makes it a different game for me. a little more of a challenge. we haven't done any challenging caches yet, the kiddies kind of limit it right now. i will be attempting some good hikes this summer, and my compass, and beads will be with me... as well as arial and topos. happy trails robbie and these are nifty too. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 22. thanks for the replies. i will look at all of these online. the kids are good for about a 2 mile round trip.. fresh out of the gate. we may do an early morning trek. there is a really cool spot just outside of milford to hide a cache.. i will pass on some photos. we will be in the area for a week, and look to do a few caches with the kids, and i may do a few dads only runs. thanks again. brian... my wife likes your site. 23. can anyone recommend any cache milford area PA,NJ, NY that would be a good introduction for a few families just starting out. we will be camping on the delaware below Port Jervis, and above Milford. Three families will be joining us, and i would like to pick a few easy, nice cache hikes and give each a turn at the hunt. any help appreciated. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 24. 25. sorry to hear about that. no doubt you will become an expert on the subject very soon. as for dousing oneself... permethrin is not a skin treatment. use it for clothes treatment. you can treat an old pair of pants and a shirt, and it will last quite a while. normal wash and dry will not ruin the treatment. it will last for numerous cycles. as far as the sulfur goes.. you must be comfortable with the info available. do that research, and see what you get out of it. good luck in your treatment, and keep us posted. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
