  1. Folks,

Life changes mean that TeamIDFC isn't able to spend much time caching, so we thought it would make sense to let some more active cachers take control of our remaining classic challenge caches so they live on to the future.  So, we are putting up for adoption:

GC1A012:  King County Thomas Guide Challenge:  The 2nd Thomas Guide challenge in the country and the first in Washington State.  Still an excellent way for cachers to learn about the entire county we live in.  Adoption will include the HTML files for the cache listing, as well as the supporting files

GC1BBZB:  AN NRV for Page 712:  Sort of a 2-for-1 with the KCTGC:  This is a "no redeeming value" cache on Vashon that was placed just to satisfy a quadrant requirement for the KCTG without having to have a boat.  Fairly self-maintaining, it should probably go with the KCTGC.

GC1M0D0:  Bellevue Blackout:  A challenge cache that is growing increasingly challenging to do with all the caches in Bellevue, but is still a cool challenge to cachers looking to solve a lot of very hard mysteries.  Adoption includes the HTML source for the cache listing.

    Thanks,

    Michael

  2. Yippee - 10,000 finds at the appropriately named Abby's Hide at Hat Rock State Park in Oregon on March 23, the day after the Hermiston Cache Machine.

    Congrats!

I'm reasonably sure we will never catch you (only 1900 and slowing down as we work more and more) but it is always good to be reminded of what we could do if we set our minds to it... :)

  3. While it is possible to use other software to combine NW Trails with other maps into one that MS can 'see,' the CN is a locked mapset and I don't believe that it's possible to view CN in other software without hacking.

    I just had a thought

The Jester makes a good point about the autoroute and different usage styles.

I used to do the same but now instead of using Garmin's City Navigator I use a free open source autorouting mapset which is a lot cheaper than $100 for Garmin's and I'm able to autoroute while using NW Topos, best of both worlds for me. That's a more advanced discussion and not maybe not fully germane; I'd be happy to discuss in detail if anyone wanted but might be best to discuss in another topic, depending perhaps on Jon's preferences.

(Starting to be on/off-topic, but related as it involves NWT).

Plenty of folks would like to be able to see both roads and trails in Mapsource on the PC when they are using it for planning/etc. Today you can see either a road set, a trail set, a topo set, or a combined topo/trail set using one of various map sets available.

Would it be possible (primarily constrained I would think by usage licenses and production effort) to combine an open-source road-map with NWT so we could see everything at a glance? I don't want to create a proliferation of overlapping sets, but that would be one I would use in MS a lot...

  4. If those were 30cal instead of the huge cans, I'd seriously look at a bid, cos I know lots of folks who'd like some 'regular' ammo cans at a reasonable price. Locals who've bought at previous auctions had no problems reselling the cans (esp. 30cal), and they are nearly impossible to find at a good price in stores anymore.

There is an upcoming auction for 30cal cans on the site, but it's 1476 of them - a bit too many for my budget.

Come on - stating bid is only $150 bucks! :)

  5. We thought about setting up a challenge like this a few years ago. Once we had completed DeLorme and Counties (and later the Oregon DeLorme and Counties, Idaho DeLorme, and now most of Colorado DeLorme) we realized we loved road-trips and caching. I think the idea of having/wanting/needing to explore the state again is great.

But, I agree with the folks that say "simple is better". I also agree that GSAK should be a requirement - you will need the boundaries, even if they are rough.

When I was thinking about it I considered it a couple ways:

    - log a cache in all cities/towns above a certain population. That tended to skew pretty urban, though.

    - log a cache in all cities/town below a certain population. Same problem, bnut skewed rural.

    - log a cache in every “defined locale”. That made it pretty overwhelming.

What I eventually settled on (but never implemented) was a pre-defined list of cities/towns/locales scattered across the state - thus forcing the spread across the state again. For example, there are not many "cities" in Asotin, but you darn sure want to make people go there as part of any statewide challenge.

I'd pick a round number - say 100, and divide it up across the state. Maybe the top 2 or 3 “cities” in each county?

However you pick it, a defined list will help you generate the tools that will make managing the challenge not take over your life. It will also make road-trip planning pretty deterministic for the rest of us.

    Just my 4 cents....

  6. There is a depressing irony to the timing of this - I just made my semi-annual property tax blood-letting to Bellevue and the state today. You would like to think that money gets used for providing reasonable and timely service to the public.

I bowed-out of this process from the beginning as I am not well suited to the pace of bureaucratic decision-making, but hearing that it took a year to get approval for what is effectively nominal public space usage is just plain disappointing – limited resources or not.

Thanks for sticking with it, WSGA-everything hydnsek. You are a better person that me... :santa:

PS: I suspect there is very low chance Sloughless will make the grade and you and Shaddow might want to consider a tactical decision to choose to not even ask for it. They'll object to the placement under the bridge under the premise that either 1) people have to stand in boats to retrieve it (dangerous), or 2) will try to climb down from the bridge (more dangerous).

  7. Do people like them or skip them?

As the owner of a couple (King County Thomas Guide Challenge and Bellevue Blackout), and the completer of many (WA DeLorme, WA Counties, OR DeLorme, OR Counties, ID DeLorme) I'd have to say that I like them... <_<

For some of us, it is 1) an excuse to get out and see what we haven't (cool parts of Washington, any of Idaho), 2) give some focus to caching (clearing out every cache in Bellevue or Seattle), or 3) just a chance to punish ourselves (now starting to work on the Colorado DeLorme - aka, roadtrips via plane).

Some folks like to "wander cache" (that what we do when not working on challenges) and others like a "focus." As someone smarter than me has said - if you post it, they will come. I wasn't certain anyone would be interested in either of our challenges, but we had finishers within days.

If you like 'em - do 'em. If you want to make one, go for it.

  8. I also have a MapSource file with a bunch of waypoints for each page, too. Very clunky, but if your options are limited.....I'd probably hold out for whatever cameltrekor dusts off.

I snagged the waypoints from the cache listing and created a S&T file with points for the corners, and a text file for GSAK. I'm still perfecting it, but I'll post it when it is golden.

And yes, you are spoiled in Washington.

Yes, yes, we are. It is so slick to open the GPS and see trails all over the state. I was even able to contribute to it so I feel a little less guilty about using it... :P

  9. IMHO 5 days isn't going to give you much time for what you want to do.

So, the first question is.... where are you gong to be other than Denver?

Oh, it isn't enough for the entire state - that's for sure. But we're likely to cover a bunch of the north/north-west part of the state as we chase fall colors and cool mountains.

While we're there we are always up for taking 45 minute side-trips to pick up extra grids. MrsIDFC has an office in Denver she needs to vistit a couple times a year, so we might pick up the DeLorme over the next few years. Thus the hope for DeLorme datasets... :)

We'll be driving up in the RMNP, Arapaho, Steamboat, Vail, etc this trip...

  10. Greetings from Washington!

TeamIDFC is going to be spending 5 days in Colorado in September taking in some baseball, some fall colors, and some caching. In starting to get ready, I thought I would seek out some resources similar to what we've got here in the Northwest, but I've come up stumped.

What I'm looking for (and hope I'm just blind and missing):

    Colorado DeLorme Challenge (GCWXFK) datasets

For the Washington DeLorme (GCQQ9B) there are data files in GPX, KMZ, and other formats with the page boundries. We like to plot out all the caches and the DeLorme pages in Streets & Trips to be sure and pick up grids, but I can’t seem to find anything other than the tables of point in the cache…

    GPS Trail Maps for Colorado

Again, I suspect we are spoiled, but there is a fabulous user-created set of GPS trail maps for the Northwest available at http://www.switchbacks.com/nwtrails/ which are fantastic for exploring areas you aren’t familiar with. I was hoping for something similar for Colorado (I know there are also some in the southwest, for example), but haven’t been able to find them.

    Colorado “Must Do Caches” bookmarks

I know this must be available, but again I haven’t been able to find them.

    Thanks for any help,

    Michael (MrIDFC)

  11. Finally managed to locate a copy of the Oregon DeLorme Gazetteer. Took the opportunity to create a KML overlay for Google Earth from it. If anyone needs it in the future, just drop me a note.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, but here are teh GSAK corners:

  13. Can I vote neither?

The Cooper is a great city car. A touch overpriced, but a fine machine that will get you where you are going in style and comfort, and even a little zip.

The Wrangler is a great summer kick-around car, but they are very loud (tires, road noise, limited insulation from the fabric sides) at anything above 25 MPH, and the ride is pretty harsh for a daily driver.

If you want a practical smaller-sized car that is good around town, but still works on the moderate off-the-pavement roads we've got, I'd vote for one of the small SUVs like the Honda CRV. More car-like than the Jeep, but more sure-footed and higher ground clearance than the Mini.

But, I wouldn't listen to me. I've got a Miata and a Land Cruiser, so I just spilt the uses into two cars... :anibad:

  14. Watch for an upcoming change to the cache rules.

It has been almost a week - the suspense about the changes is killing us. C'mon Flutey! ;)

Sorry for the delay. I'm in the middle of transitioning to a new computer . . . *sigh*

Three weeks and my fingers are burning to hear what the changes are and start plotting our next series of trips... :)
