  2. Here is my 'take' from a bit of extra 'trashing-out' I did near three Rocklin, California caches that I have found. This additional trip happened on Jan 4th, 2003. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  3. In our area of the country one of the worst is Star Thistle. Ask any single trak mountain biker who has ever biffed into the stuff. Horrible invasive stuff with sturdy, spiky thorns circling an innocent looking yellow flower. Yuck! "Could be worse...could be raining"
  4. Another way to do a multi would not require you to place anything at the site. By providing a key in your description page (or just a simple letter to number conversion 'a=1, b=2'), you could direct the finder to complete the coordinates for the second stage of the multi by gleaning the information from the signs that exist at the refuge viewing area. (ie: 'N35.27.---, the seconds being the first letter of the first three words on the middle sign, converted as shown below') Just my $0.02 "Could be worse...could be raining"

  6. I have one cache that is located near one of my normal driving routes. I now always look at both the area and the recommended parking location whenever I drive by there. I have actually seen two cachers at the location as I am driving (it's too far away to recognize individuals from that distance and with the speed limit that is posted for that road). It is such a cool feeling! I get home and can't wait to see the log notification pop up on my e-mail. I like to get all my cache notifications, but when I can 'catch someone in the act', it's even better. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  7. quote:Originally posted by Mr. Hinky:What are the best containers that folks have found for caching? We all know ammo boxes and tupperware work well and film canisters are decent for very small things. What other common containers have you found that make great cache holders? Small, medium or large. What are the very best solutions that have been used? --Peter As a friend of mine would say...that's like asking what is the best religion! It depends on so much. climate, availability, security, cache location, etc., etc. Perhaps 'What kind of cache containers are used out there' would lead to more inspiration than 'what is the best'. 8. This is totally off topic, but 'I are a English Major' (note: self-aimed sarcasm), and wonder if spell check was used below quote:why do kamakazi pilots where helmet??????? "Could be worse...could be raining"
  9. Wanted to bump this string for strictly personal reasons. My rebate request has now been rejected as well by wheresmyrebate.com. Want to know from those out there that have made contact with Thales, what did they request from you? I sent Wheresmyrebate a copy of the receipt, but the original UPC. Is there a chance for a rebate out there? "Could be worse...could be raining"
  10. Sometimes several days go by and I am finding everything I go for, I feel like a 'journeyman' level cacher. Other days, I get skunked and other people are finding the same caches on the same days I am out there and I feel like a 'newbie'. For me, ranking is individual and personal, and not necessarily just about numbers. Someday I may get past this way of evaluating myself as a cacher, but I doubt it. 11. quote:1. How did you find out/start geocaching? 2. Who/what got you started geocaching? 3. How often you do it? 4. How long have you been doing it? 5. Spending amounts: a. Price of GPS b. Placing a cache c. other equipment and prices (lights, ropes, etc) 1. First read it in a newspaper article about a year ago. Thought it sounded cool. 2. This past summer, my husband won a GPSr at a computer geek conference. The GPSr sat around for quite a while. One day, on the computer looking around on Google, found the geocaching.com website. Signed up and found my first cache within about an hour. 3. Started slow, now caching on average twice a week. 4. Since November 2002 5. Don't have a lot of expendable income (stay at home mom), so I try to find deals to keep me in geocaching equipment. GPSr: 1st one free (see above). A Blazer 12 (two decimal) Just recently replaced with a Magellan Meridian (on sale for $99.00 - Rebate (hopefully to come, see other threads on this forum..haven't figured out how to Markwell yet) for $50.00 - net $49.00 Placing a cache: Can't give exact figure, but not much. Since I don't have many out there yet, a lot of my cache items have been gleaned from things already owned. Other equipment: Handspring Visor PDA used exclusively for caching - $50.00 on e-bay. Backpack - $1.99 at a thrift store. "swag" - so far approximately $100.00. Swag expenses are hard to determine, due to using previously owned stuff, packs of batteries bought in bulk, things purchased in bulk from mail order and picking up things on sale whenever and wherever. I'm just always looking for a deal. Don't want to give junk, but also don't want to break my nearly non-existant bank either. *edited to add.... Geocaching.com membership - $30.00 Oh, yeah, there's that gas thing too..... "Could be worse...could be raining" [This message was edited by ErSamin on March 18, 2003 at 12:16 PM.]
  12. For your first 'stage', are you considering using perhaps a puzzle of sorts that can be completed using the web? One thought I had was to do some sort of word puzzle (crossword?) where the answers were found on the geocaching website, which would then lead to a 'key' to convert certain letters into numbers. this would familiarize the seeker with the geocaching website, perhaps have them learn a thing or two about the sport, and make it both a mental and physical exercise. This idea is inspired by a great cache in the Sacramento area. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  13. My Magellan Blazer 12 (just recently replaced) was called 'Ol' Blaze'. Don't have a name for my new unit yet, but thinking of calling it 'Fatso' because it doesn't fit in the car mount I made for 'Ol' Blaze'. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  14. "At least it's not a 'Bag-O-Doots'!" "Could be worse...could be raining"
  15. Guilty also. The little Altoid Sours tins and others like that are especially cool. I also am constantly on the lookout for larger containers. Sometimes my husband can get some cool stuff from his work with computers. Another one that caught my eye lately are speed loaders for paintball. Looks like they have some possibilities. Older GPS

My old Blazer 12 was also a two-decimal unit. I just got a Meridian last week, but my first 60-something finds were with "Ol' Blaze". What I learned from this is that I could still find caches, and did not fall victim to "needle-itis" as much as some. Having that large of a target area forces you to be more observant; footprints, trampled grass, URP's (unusual rock piles), and just plain instinct have to be paid attention. It's not great, but it's not bad having a two digit unit. My biggest issue was trying to hide caches....now there's where you will run into a problem. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  17. You could also try your post looking for a GPS unit on the Geocaching Forum for your country. That might help you hook up with someone a little closer to your home. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  18. Has anyone out there used a USB reader/writer to download maps, etc. to their Secure Digital cards? Downloading through the unit's serial cable is sooooooooo Slooooooooow. What is the time savings (rough examples o.k.)? Have you found it worth the investment? Do you identify it as another COM port? Any information would be appreciated. 19. When I'm caching, I don't even think about eating. Last weekend I did a series of caches in a nearby town. I got home about 3:00pm and realized I had had nothing to eat since breakfast. If I hang around the house, that kind of willpower is impossible for me. I get out and hike, I get away from the TV, and I have a great time. What could be better than that? "Could be worse...could be raining"
  20. a local cache states in the cache description where to park (no coordinates, but something to the effect "Park on "X" street to the north of the cache location"), yet in the logs are statements to the effect...."Easy find, but had to run accross multiple lane highway" I guess everyone has their own way of caching. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  21. Seen on the dirt encrusted rear window of a neglected, white mini-van... "Also comes in white" "Could be worse...could be raining"
  22. Granted, I don't have hundreds of finds (around the mid-60's as of now) but what I have heard from cachers around here, and what I did for my 50th was to make that milestone find a particular scenic, difficult or critically acclaimed cache. My 50th was "Survivor Sacramento" and though I have nothing to signify that other than a few pictures and what I wrote in the log, I will always remember it. It's not the outward trappings, but the memories that count. (edited for spelling error...though there are probably more I didn't catch!) "Could be worse...could be raining"
  23. Sometimes I will recycle the items I have traded out, but if I have convinced my 3 1/2 year old to go caching with me (not an everyday proposition) she gets to keep whatever single item she picks. If I end up finding a micro and she is with me, she gets to pick something out of my "swag bag". Therefore, even though I recycle some stuff, I am always running at a defecit as far as cache loot goes. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  24. Better researched article than some others I have read. "Could be worse...could be raining"
