  1. Ok, I read that and it sounds like most people are using the NatGeo Topo map in combination with another software like TopoFusion. Thanks
  2. Ecanderson, Ok that is the one I have downloaded before. For most things it is good. I have not tried, but can you print those maps out? gpsbjorn, That is interesting I will have to try that out. I guess since I have already downloaded 24k maps for Washington I should really be looking for software that does the best printed maps and is easy to use. I have a good Epson printer that does 13x19 sheets, so they should come out nice. Thanks
  3. Hi all, I have been trying to figure out which mapping software to purchase. I have tried looking through the FAQ and doing searches, but I have not found what I was really looking for. I have an Oregon 400T. From what I understand none of the topo prorgams will load maps to my garmin? I have put the Garmin map on it and downloaded some for the Washington state area. It would be cool if there was one that I could download. The way I plan on using this is making some way points and trails and figuring areas I should scout for hunting. I like to have good detail becasue a lot of time I end up following a deer trail or picking my own way through. Some times I will get turned around, but can usually work my way out. I want to be able to print maps to get a better idea of the overall area. I usually always take a hard map and compass. The software I am looking at is Expert GPS, National Geographic State Topo, and the Delormie 9.0 Expert GPS: I have used the trial version about 6-7 years ago. From what I saw it was pretty cool that you could download USGS maps from the whole US and aerial pictures. Granted it seamed like the data was old since it showed I-90 not being completed between Ellensberg and Vantage. Delormie Topo: I have used it in 1999 and at the time it seamed hard to use and not very intuitive even for a computer guy. Granted great leaps and bounds have been made in the computer world in 11 years. NatGeo Topo: My friend used it and liked it. The maps looked nice. It seams I am limited to only buying a state topo if I want the detail. I really don't know much about it. I would love to hear from the people that have these products. Thanks Martin
  4. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-n%C3%BCMaps-A...=dp_ob_title_ce I do not currently have City Navigator. Is this a full version or does it require you to have a previous city navigator?
  5. So where can I purchase CN 10? I was on Garmin's site and it didn't say the version. I took the part number plugged it into Google and some came up saying 2008 and others said 2009 upgrade. I need to purchase a new full copy for my Oregon. Do I just get the 08 and then download the updated 10? Also was is the best price people have seen for a legal full copy? Thanks Martiin
  6. Well crap. I thought I saw the best brice with $455 plus the 50 rebate and free shipping. I ordered mine Sunday 3rd and didn't look on here until today.
  7. This is awesome. Does it work smoothly with out major issues? Has anyone used this for an Oregon? If it does work on the Oregon I will have decided which GPS I am getting.
  8. I have decided to get two GPS one for Hiking (to be decided later) and one for the car. I see the Nuvi 550 from 255-275 and I just saw a coupon through Costco for a Nuvi 855 for $299. Is it worth the little extra to go for the 855? Which one would you choose with the price spread above. Thanks Martin
  9. I like what the PN-40 does, but I am not so wild about the screen size. It is not bad, it just isn't great. I was just reading about the new Lorance which sound pretty good. It also sounded like you could load PDX files. You know how it is I want to have my cake and eat it too. There are some nice GPS devices out there and it is just hard to decide which one. So what would you do with Expert GPS becides put routes on them and print it? Nothing wrong with that as I usually have a hard copy map and my compass as backup.
  10. I was looking at Expert GPS and saw that they had GPX files. Can't you take the USGS maps and Sat photos and up load them into say an Oregon? Is there better software then Expert GPS? Thanks Martin
  11. I have to apologize fro my post as I was in a hurry. I meant that I currently have a 60c that I use for hiking and the city select turn by turn. I want something that works well for both. I am very interested in being able to load the USGS and sat map. Is the screen on the PN-40 easy to read these maps? Sorry got to run my 2 year old is dive bombing me to get my attention. thanks Martin
  12. If you had to choice between the PN40 and the Oregon 400T which one would you take and why? I myself am looking for a good Hiking GPS that will do turn by turn like my 60c. Thanks
  13. I just did what I should have done which is called Garmin. As I thought my GPS was out of Warrenty, but what did Garmin say "We will cover that under warrenty". That is one of the reasons I buy Garmin, if I have a problem Garmin is good about resolving it. Thank you Chris! Martin
  14. That describes the problem I have. I would be leary about doing that. I know I don't have any warrenty left, but Garmin has been known to have good CS. If I mess up all bets are off then. Thanks. I'll just call them.
  15. My 60C would radomly turn off including having the screen fade. I called Garmin and they said oh it is a battery clip problem send it in. Well they put the foam behind the battery clips and replaced my scratched up face, which was cool. I got it back and had no problems for awhile. I was out hiking and noticed that it kept shutting off on me. I also saw the screen fade. I have not dropped it and it really was not bouncing around hard. I use duracell Alkiliene(SP) batteries. I have searched these forums and google looking for my same problem, but I have only found the battery issue. I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts of what it might be before I call Garmin. Thanks Martin
