  1. We have flown to (and back ) the US on a number of times, with Virgin and Monarch and never had an issue. Always carry it on as hand luggage. We did get stopped once as we were about to board at Manchester and had to show that everything worked. From memory we had 3 mobiles, 2 laptops, 4 Ipods, 3 Nintendo DS's, 2 cameras, a GPS and a Tomtom. They stopped us for one of the laptops and you should have seen the faces on the two guards drop when me, my wife and three kids started producing electronics from everywhere. Never been asked again. The GPSr was great as we flew over and then down the east coast of Canada and the US we knew exactly where we were and the towns/cities that were below. I had set the GPSr to a cache near the airport so we knew how far it was as well.
  2. Google maps are fine here, but do you actually mean the little Open Street Maps near the top of the cache page to the right? They take some getting used to but did change a couple of months back
  3. There are a couple of caches from 2001 that are still active along the coast in Norfolk so they are worth a visit: Holkham Haul and `Silent Sentinel` Kelling (N Norfolk) not many left from way back then.
  4. I tend to add a note to my solved puzzles in GSAK and any that appear in my local area without a note I look at and solve them well some of them anyway Currently if you download a corrected puzzle/multi on its own straight from the site or by using the API it will bring the corrected coordinates over and into GSAK, but PQ's do not do this YET (it is on its way). Currently PQ's bring the owner's posted coordinates. Part of the new PQ roll out will bring corrected coordinates, links to pictures and your notes from the cache page amongst other things.
  5. I seem to recall guessing after the last couple of new reviewers but we (or maybe it was just me) never did find out who they were/are.
  6. Also how are you loading the caches from GSAK? I use the Garmin Macro which has an option in it to send to either the unit or memory card. Maybe when the load box appears check for settings you might have the default setting selected so may need to unselect that.
  7. This does not help directly with the issue you are seeing, but why not when looking for caches close to home do something different and quicker?: On the Your Profile page to the right, under search options click on either the little map icon (called Map It) which will display a map based on your home coordinates or below there is another title: Search For Geocaches with two options, either select near your home location or if you do not want to see those you have found or placed click on filter out finds.
  8. Looking at the op's profile they were both published yesterday (17th). Edit to say I must read every line in preceding posts. Whoops
  9. Try a hard reset, to see if it fixes it for you.
  10. I have come across a few where there is a box and log book at each stage. Some of the logs on these suggest someone found the first stage, signed the log in there and had gone home, occasionally with comments along the lines of we will come back another day and find the next one, not sure if they then log it again:blink:
  11. If you ever enter caches in manually using their coordinates make sure you get a Tomtom with a full menu, the simple menu does not allow this, as I found out to my detriment:( You need to check the Tomtom website and look for units with the full menu, from memory the simple menu is not mentioned only the full. There is a good price & feature comparision website here for all sat navs: http://www.satnav-discounts.co.uk/tomtom-go/tomtom-xl2-prices.htm
  12. ....and I, personally, can certainly vouch for this between about 2003 and 2008  I found my first cache on the Isle back in September 2007 and it was not part of the UK then in a geocaching sense. The Isle has a fascinating history I love going over (for work so its free for me )
  13. Traditional caches should be at the coordinates 100ft out sounds to me like the GPSr was not set to WGS84. As per MartyBartfast's reply posting the actual coordinates where it is, is so much more helpful than just saying the coordinates were out. This will also give the CO the correct details to put on the cache page if they do not know how to get better coordinates themselves
  14. I normally load a GPX file with are 1700 or so caches, there are occasions when I have to load it a couple of times before it takes, but as I mentioned earlier sometimes its fine.
  15. This is a long standing and ignored issue with Colorado's if you search back you will find issues with this going back a few years. I have sent GPX files to Garmin, changed software, formatted it and still it happens. But, there is no logic to it you can load a GPX file and it is fine, or it loads some of the caches or none, I also have had issues where other individual GPX cache files do not appear when the main GPX file is loaded. The best way around it I have found is, connect to your PC, delete the GPX files from the unit, unplug it, start it up, thenturn it off and connect back to the PC and load the GPX file again, but before you go out check it seems to have loaded all the caches. I tend to then search for ones at the edge of the GPX zone by name and if they appear all is well. Garmin are aware, claim it is a one off but lots of people have complained but nothing. Loading smaller files does seem to make it less likely to happen. It does happen to Oregons from time to time as I understand it, but is much less frequent from what I gather.
  16. This seemed a good place to paste this link as the original owner and creator is contributing to this post: http://blog.geocaching.com/ The cache is http://www.geocachin...aspx?wp=GC1ZPE8 as it will slip down the page. Well done HH
  17. You will need to set up a notification for each time of cache you are interested in. So one for traditionals, one for multis, one for earthcaches and so on. It can be a pain doing each type seperately but if you do not do certain types of caches you don't need to set one up for them. It will ask for a distance, I would suggest keeping it fairly close otherwise you might get deluged with notifications
  18. Not impossible at all... We have super powers We are supposed to help reviewers improve the game by reporting anomalies and I may or may not have done so in the past but I don't bother these days because nothing gets done about it anyway... I understand Delta68's comments, I have tended to report issues, in the past. But it felt at one stage a while back I wasreviewing the reviewers due to new caches, most of which were due to issues on the cache page, including things such as: hidden in a black plastic bag, behind the gravestone of xxx, remove the odd stone (in a drystone wall.) A couple of traditionals which were obviously virtuals. Another opposite a school gateway. So I have stepped back and tend to let someone else report them now if they know any better as it just seems to much aggro. Just seen one go through yesterday which obviously has an error on the coords as the cache mentions a museum and standing in the street to get it, the coordinates put it in the middle of a nowhere without even a footpath. To make it clear I have the upmost respect for the reviewers and errors will happen, but I feel its not down to me to review their work?
  19. We have 233 US finds and do not appear although our daughter Keebee who found them with us does Our statistics are hidden so I guess that maybe why. They are hidden as it throws up some odd items like the travelling cache at the 1st UK Mega, that normally lives in Texas. I got GS to remove the Souvenir (whatever happened to them) and corrected its location in GSAK to the site of the Mega, so my stats are correct.
  20. Happy New Year Deci and to everyone else out there.
  21. Glad its not just me. Seen it a few of time over the last week or so, includind twice today.
  22. You could use the list of finders with over 200 finds, which is here: http://www.cacherstats.com/United_Kingdom1.html But it is not sortable, as it is. You would need to copy each page into something like Excel and then sort from there, it might help if the names given previously are to far away from you.
  23. As a finder it is a good idea where possible to carry a few spare logs and cloth to dry caches out. This does not remove the need for owners to maintain caches but if you come across one that is damp (maybe the last finder found it in a heavy rain shower) or the log is full you can help out.
  24. The reviewers simply do not have the time to check up on permission for all the caches that come through, they treat people as grown ups and for most caches will assume that as the CO has clicked on the box saying that suitable permission to place the cache has been sought, that it has been. They will normally spot obvious ones where it would not be possible to get permission. The reviewers do check in greater depth for caches in specific locations including NT, SSSI's etc.
  25. Hi Gaz, welcome As Fianccetto said in my opinion it's well worth finding a good few before setting them, you will see what works and what does not. There are already more caches out there than you could ever possibly find, so no mad rush in setting them. A good place to have a read is the GAGB guidelines for specific UK issues/guidelines and also the Groundspeak Help Center . The stickers you mention are an easy way of providing the required information, you do not have to use them but will need to label the caches up saying what they are and providing contact details.
