  1. Sent mine in at end of September and after reading your post sent in a request to garmin to give me status. Got an e-mail back that they use an offsite rebate company located in Texas and that they can not find out the status (ie if "approved or not ") until the 12th week. Sounds like a lot of bull to me and also means I have to wait until the last week of December?.
  2. I installed it on my unit. It said the "ripples" would disappear in a few days. They didnt. While I can still see the screen the cover has a lot of Ripples/waves I have to look through. Maybe I was too agressive with the scaper tool, not liberal enough with the solution or ? but I am not a happy camper with the result.
  3. Noticed the travelling phenomena on my 60csx this weekend. When I paused my travel for a few minutes the unit shows me going sideways (each side) for a total travel of about 150 ft. Got right back on track when I started to move again. Another interesting observance was that my start elevation was 60 some feet lower than my end elevation even though physically they were the same spot.
  4. let me know how you make out i have the same trouble, i have v-4.09 and i downloaded the new updates and it say's the same thing, it will not load, and my 60csx will not work with it........... Discovered trip & waypoint manager(mapsource ver 3.0) is really ver. 6.02 and also that installing us topo installs a second version of mapsource that is 4.09 which is what you have. I deleted us topo mapsource and now at least I can connect to my computer. Still cant download the updated version and dont know how to reaquire my us topo map set but at least some improvement.
  5. Got my first gpsr garmin 60csx (works great in field). With it got mapsource v. 3.0 which I installed before I connected my gps and also before I installed Map Source Topo which had mapsource v 4.09. Was lucky once in that my first track I was able to download after loading the Topo disc 1 and then Topo East. Then Computer wouldnt recognize usb. Went on garmin web site and they say have to have ver 5.4 or higher Duh? why dont they put v5.4 in the box with the 60csx instead of v. 3.0. Anyway , using my dialup conn. I download 20 MB v. 6115 per their list (hours later) onto my desktop. To assure no conflict I erase V. 3.0 an then try to install the download. Wont install because cant find previous ver. of mapsource. Soo I install previous disc and try again -same answer. So I have no more alternatives. Isnt garmin such a wonderful supplier - Maybe if I call their techies they will be the heros they didnt have to be if they had provided a proper program with the unit in the first place.
  6. Until today I was able to use Doug Cox's program USA Photo Maps to download data from terraserver-usa.com and set up waypoints and grids and print the result. Now I cant get any data from terraserver either through Cox's program or directly(I just get a white textured print when I click on an area in terraserver or an X in every section I try to import in Cox's program. Also I cant print the data from Cox's program screen directly but now have to save it as a jpeg before I can print it. The files in my USA Photo Maps folder carry a file type .dta and .ptr(one of each for each map download). It must be something stupid but I would appreciate if anyone would care to trouble shoot for me. Thanks.
  7. Got it working and think I know some of the answer. I initially installed trip & waypoint manager when I got my 60csx with the gpsr connected per instruction for Win98SE. When later I got the topo I just installed it without the gpsr connected. Ended up with two versions of mapsource-one under Map Source and one under Garmin. Versions are different and Map Source could not detect a serial port so wouldnt connect. When I realized Map Source was also installed on Garmin then clicking on it brought up the maps and communication was made. At least that is what I think. I only put this reply in in case there are other computer challenged people out there with gps(not).
  8. Just got mapsource and installed per instruction the no 1 disc - 7 megs or so. No maps loaded and I cant find any information on how to load maps to the computer hard drive. One note in the manual says disc for areas covered by multiple disc maps has to be in the computer to install maps but I cant even get one map of the west(disc 1)to load in order to see it onscreen. Am I missing something??
  9. Im very new to gps. MY 60csx shows a track I made in my back forty and in the track specs it list the area of the track as 5.1 acres. Since my track is more or less a single line how does it calculate an area and what does that area represent. Cant find it in the manual.
  10. From the satellite page: menu/menu/tracks/setup button - from here you can select time, distance or auto method of placing track points. I did all that-Question was how to change interval (below distance on track setup) to something other than miles. And then I dont understand how I got into the middle of the pacific in 15 mins. of walking. If I go into setup, units -would that do it?? Oops! not listening. Auto adjusts track point distance?

  12. Got my 60csx two days ago and thought Id try tracks around my back yard. Set tracks for distance and then looked at interval which shows in miles. I did not want to calculate what portion of a mile I wanted to set the track points at so I left it at the default of 1.00 miles. When I got back from my walk about I had gone .671 miles and so I saved the file , selected the track and clicked map. Ended up in the middle of the pacific ocean having gone over 17000 miles. Duh! I dont have the topo yet (in the mail) but I didnt think I needed it to show tracks even if only on the basemap. Principal question is,and I have searched the manual and this site to find an answer _ Is there a way to change the interval units on distance to something other than miles and does the unit actually use 1 mile as an interval or is there a default interval built in?? Sorry to seem so stupid but this thing is not as simple as it first appears-Id say the manual is lacking as far as newbies goes.
  13. I did look up garmins topo for one of the areas I am interested in and all I could get at max resolution was a road and a couple of contours too far apart to be useful. There are streams and swamps as well as considerable hills in the area that should show up on a decent contour map. Ive read on this site how you can load waypoints as polylines over the garmin map but that sounds much too time consuming and techi for a moderately computer challenged slow witted senior citizen like me- besides Id rather be trekking.
  14. I am / have been for some time considering buying a 60sx-mostly for trekking in the woods on hunting or exploring new territory. My thought was to use the topo to locate myself re streams, roads terrain detail. Obviously as I found out this is not possible with the sparse-almost non existant data on the garmin offering. It seemed my need for a gps unit became far less desirable than a map and a compass , but I dont give up easily. There must be those of you out there that do this and my question is-are maps available that can locate you quickly with gps data from the unit - thought being that carrying a paper map although less handy is no big deal if your location can be quickly pinpointed using the gps readout.
