  1. Am I the only one having this problem?
  2. Good morning, I have been having problems with the geocaching map recently. When I click on a cache on the map view it brings up the bubble with the cache name, size, d/t rating, ect. If the bubble is over another cache and I click any of the hyperlinks it closes the bubble and opens a new bubble for the new cache. It also will now close the bubble of the cache if there is a location description (ie a restaurant) in the vicinity of the cache. This never happened before a couple months ag,o but it is always happening now. I thought it was a temporary but this has been going on for a over a month now and it is starting to irritate me now. I use the map view to plan most of my caching days. Thank you for your time.
  3. Couple of ways to interpret it in my mind. The 1 year deadline could be a simple thumbs up/thumbs down on whether Challenges continue on the site. It seems as though they met that deadline given that sort of interpretation. I'm not sure how much communication you desire. Some folks are needier than others I guess I love how someone expressing their opinion in forums needs to be viewed as an opportunity to attack by those with a different view. Personally, a set deadline as the 1 year moratorium was, should have been resolved in the specified timeline. If not Groundspeak should be informing their customers what the delay is and what their plans are. From what I have seen we have only had one update in a month, I do not believe that that is improving their reputation. I do not believe that is needy. Personally "within the next few weeks" is not a timeline, especially when we have crossed the one month treshhold.
  4. Groundspeak, 13 months and counting on a a one year moratorium. 1 announcement. You stated in the announcement that you needed a couple more weeks to implement the new challenge cache framework. Let's get a move on, you owe your paying members more than this.
  5. My boys 8 and 13 both have their own premium accounts, we monitor their usage and they log my caches an I log theirs. My only rule is no family first to finds on family caches, after that fair game.
  6. For that type of cache the checker is already written, but the challenge would be maintaining and adding to a list of acceptable words to work with the checker. It would just be the CO adding a word to the word list to allow the new word to be accepted by the checker. Or you say you want caches with the following words. The more open ended the challenge, in other words the "any animal name in the title" just means more work for the CO in deciding what names/ words are going to be accepted by the checker
  7. People are concerned about false logs, and completed but not completed streaks... A bigger concern in my books is people that can't find a cache so throw down a new container even though the original, creative, well hidden container is still in place. This behavior affects me more than cheats and people that don't know how to play the game.
  8. I totally understand your point, unfortunately with the prevalence of Cellular Devices and the fact that they can do GPS functionality at little to no additional expense to the user the beginner Geocacher will likely download the app. They do not know there are better apps available. They do not know that a GPS is still a better tool. They do know that they are shown a lot of caches but are limited an the type of ordinary caches they can access. My brother tried it out in an area that the hides were on knowles along a roadway and the caches were reasonably hidden. Mostly 2/2 caches, and could not go to them due to the restrictions that Groundspeak put into the app. I have been telling him about Geocaching for 3 years and he finally tried it and all the local caches were not accessible. Frustrated by this he will likely not try geocaching again regardless of how I go on. I do not think Groundspeak needs to be defended, they just need to be aware that the app is loosing them potential customers.
  9. I think it's just right... New app folks can see that others are around, those elusive "advanced" (or are they calling 'em premium" again?) caches tease them if they're (really) interested at all. Haven't used this new app yet, but basic members are reminded ad naseum about pm. Many COs place caches with higher D/T to keep from having to make their caches pmo. It keeps the free app kids at bay, while long-time basic GPSr users/paid app folks can still access. Raise it to 3/3, and they might have to make those caches pmo, or archive 'em. I don't understand the "need" to restrict access to caches, archive them, or prevent users from accessing them. could you explain what the purpose of this is? Archiving is doe when a cache owner or reviewer no longer support the cache. I would be missing, not supported... Restricting access in 1 form or another can be by using the wrong software (Geocachings app) or by the Cache owner deciding to make the cache premium only, which could be done for a variety of reasons. The owner may have put a lot of work into creating the hide and could be worried about damage to the hide or surroundings. I am unsure why other than $$$$ Groundspeak is limiting regular cache access to any users of the app.
  10. Perhaps you are thinking of the short term premium membership which is $10 for 3 months. No when i was looking at his app and clicked on a higher difficulty cache it had a box to click on to access the cache information. I am sure that it said $40/year or I am sure $9.99/month the numbers didn't make sense and really a lot of park and grabs are rated at 2/2.
  11. MY biggest problem is that it is no longer the geocaching intro app. This is the geocaching app. In order to access all the higher difficulty caches you need to pay a higher cost ($10.00/month) or a premium membership to access caches that a GPS user can access for free. The app could have a cost but it should be in the $10.00 total range.
  12. Wow, my brother tried the new App and I am shocked. They are blocking all access to any cache above 1.5/1.5 I am shocked that Ground Speak is working so hard to drive away new cachers. Blocking Premium Caches sure but excluding non-paying customers from playing probably 50% of caches is not going to enhance the game just prevent people from getting started. I am shocked.
  13. Everybody here is the beginning text for the category I am developing this will be enhanced and changed on feedback and direction I am receiving here. Short description: This category is for old mining, construction and demolition equipment or significant parts of these equipment on permanently parked on display intentionally or otherwise. Long description: Throughout the world there are many places where old pieces of heavy equipment have been put on display. This category is for purpose built vehicles on wheels, articulated tracks, or very rarely on walking legs. This category specifically excludes tractors(vehicles designed for pushing or pulling another piece of equipment), agricultural equipment, railroad equipment, parts still attached to a piece of equipment. We will allow the listing of individual pieces of Equipment displayed in a museum but the cost of admission must be posted in the waymark description. We would also like to encourage the listing of individual parts of a piece of Heavy Equipment (ie The bucket from a drag-line, that is a display on it's own or a tire from a large mining truck). This type of listing would not include a scrapped tire lying beside a road or in a farmers field. So guys what do you think as a starting point?
  14. Why is there a major hesitation to create new categories if the proposed waypoints don't fit with what is currently listed. It sounds like the general thought is to try to force it to fit within the current structure rather than adapt the structure. A motor grader even if used to drain land really doesn't fit the Machine Category definition or the ag equipment definition and really the use of the equipment is too specific to be classified as a tractor. These types of equipment are in use around the world and I know of many sites that the retired equipment is long term parked or put on static display. The equipment in a museum display could also be individually waymarked for search by interested waymarkers. In searching I found a crawler tractor category had been created but for some reason it is not listed, I am curious as to why? I am trying to understand the way this works but am having a very hard time.
  15. I have my doubts that this would fly. I recently proposed two new categories, New Brunswick Heritage Properties and Prince Edward Island Heritage Properties. The unanimous response from the community was to incorporate them into the existing category, Nova Scotia Heritage Properties. So ... this is what we did and the category is now Atlantic Canada Heritage Properties, which also includes Newfoundland & Labrador as a bonus. Your proposed category is already covered by Preserved Machines on Public Display, so I doubt that the community would welcome a category that pretty much completely overlaps an existing one. AAMOF, we (BK-Hunters) have posted many pieces of "construction / destruction equipment" into that category to date, as well as road maintenance equipment, and mining and logging equipment. BK-Hunters I am getting the hang of this slowly, I am surprised that the community would reject the idea of a province specific category when there are already province specific categories in play, then forcing the renaming of one of the original categories. This situation is similar. There are already categories specifically for Tractors, kind of a category for crawler tractors but it is not on the active list. Locomotives, cabooses, rail cars, right of way maintenance equipment... I would view construction/destruction equipment as more of a vehicle than a machine hence not looking in the machine category before posting this.
  16. Good Day, I am fairly new to the Waymarking side of Groundspeak's empire and learning as I go. I have been working on adding some waymarks I have discovered over the last several months. I have found an area that I think needs improvement in the category Technology / Vehicles. As far as I can tell we have nothing narrowing from vehicles into the heavy equipment realm. I would like to eventually see a category for construction / destruction equipment static displays and if that gains some interest then maybe subcategories for road maintenance and construction / Mining / Logging... I am looking for some interested members to join my group and maybe we can get this ball rolling. The group name is "Heavy Equipment Aficionados" and it is currently open for members. Thanks for your interest.
  17. Well I learned something. I sure does add to the time taken to log the finds though. Thanks guys for your responses.
  18. Interesting, sure would not want to drive you more nuts, however did you happen to notice that your waymark Giant Mosquito - Komarno, Manitoba was already done as a roadside attraction? http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMPH75_Giant_Mosquito_Komarno_Manitoba Mosquito Statue - Komarno MB posted by Peter and Gloria on 5/24/2010 http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM8X2V_Mosquito_Statue_Komarno_MB Unfortunately, yes. Must have searched incorrectly for the point prior to creating a new point because I could not find a listing. After creation, I did find the older waymark. This kind of could be resolved if the 2 waymarks could be combined and use both categories for this point of interest.
  19. I am new to Waymarking but have noticed something that is already driving me nuts. The multiple listing of objects under multiple categories. For example Mt Rushmore has approximately 15 waymarks dealing with the statues themselves. One under national monuments, one under Abraham Lincoln, George Washington..... Why is it that Groundspeak hasn't allowed multiple categories to the same waymark? It would definitely reduce the number of repetitive waymarks to log.
