  1. Brogan... Thank you for your generous offer
  2. I think that you're taking these rules a little too literally. I understand them this way: 'Should you decided to trade, here's how it works: you can take something but you must leave something in exchange'. I personally find the trading aspect unnecessary since I am only interested in the hunt. I usually leave a wooden 'G' token which is my signature item and very rarely trade stuff. To me, the experience of the location and the hunt together are what GC'ing is all about. The stuff in the caches is just icing on the cake mostly to keep things interesting for kids. My 2 cents.
  3. -=(GEO)=-'s Farewell to Western NY... Well, it's official, I am moving to the Pacific Northwest very shortly. During my short time spent in WNY, some of you (you know who you are) have become good friends and I'll miss seeing you at gatherings, impromptu dinners, caching trips at night in the snow or even just bumping into you on the trails... These memories will remain forever in my private logbook ;-) I have also decided to leave all the caches that I have placed in NY right where they are. Just a year ago, caches South of Buffalo were few and far between and I'm proud to have contributed in changing the geocaching landscape in that area. I would like to leave them as my 'Geo-Legacy' if you are willing to adopt them. Please contact me as soon as possible to let me know which caches you would like to adopt or take over completly. The remaining caches will move with me to WA and will be recycled there. Regards, Fabien. [This message was edited by -=(GEO)=- on July 27, 2003 at 10:34 PM.]
  4. The plan is fairly straight forward: a number of local cachers have already expressed that they would like to adopt some if not most of my caches. By creating a 'Farewell To NY' cache, I wanted to make the fact that I'm relocating known to all local fellow cachers maximizing the chances that my existing caches (including the farewell one) will get adopted. Whatever remains unadopted will move to WA with me and will be recycled. I'm planning on posting an 'adoption offer' in a new thread too.
  5. Well, in your case things are a bit different. Your cache -has been- reviewed and archived because it's a virtual. Mine is a micro. So far, NJ-Admin has been the approver for NY, not Keystone Approver. So, the question remains: NJAdmin, are you there?
  6. I've had a cache waiting in the queue for a few days now which is not usual. Does anyone know what's going on?
  7. For what it's worth... I frequently hit multiple caches in a row by having the GPSr and my PDA loaded with the waypoints generated with Pocket Queries. I never print maps because I have detailed TOPO info already in the GPSr. I also want to mention that my PDA is a Pocket PC for the sake of simplicity: I copy the Pocket Query xml file to it and I'm done. None of that 'converting file formats using 3 different proggies' non-sense...
  8. What the heck... These staffs are -very- cool. Count me in!
  9. EGH... Thanks I wish you could enjoy some of the caches that I and others around WNY have placed. I'll bring some of the concepts back with me when I move to WA next month. I'm not sure where I'll place them considering the cache concentration... But it will be fun
  10. You have no idea how good it feels to have you guys going over that one I know I'll pay for it very shortly with a taste of my own medecine but for the time being, it's fun. See you all very soon.
  11. I just got an IPaq 1945 and I'm running GPXView (latest version) on it. It works but there's a problem displaying icons. As a result, GPXView attempts to access the network to download them continuously. The truely odd thing is that the icons are actually there which is evidenced when showing the hint and coming back. During a brief second, the icons do show up. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?
  12. I've had some whacky problems with 4.06 (unofficial version from Yahoo Meridian Groups) and while trying to downgrade to a lower version of the firmware, I ended up killing the GPS! I had to send to Magellan for reprogramming. It came back with 4.06 on it -again- !! But here's the funny thing: the GPS seems to behave now. Looks like the reprogramming of the unit flushed out a few cobwebs ;-) One thing that I love about v4.06 is the card utilities. Once you start using them, you can't do w/o them.
  13. I've got a Gecko 201 as a backup GPS. My primary one is a MeriPlat (I love it!). I like the Gecko for the form factor (it makes a great mountain bike onboard computer!) and it performs somewhat OK under tree cover but loses signal when it gets too thick (my MeriPlat works fine under the same conditions). If you can spend a little more, get a better GPS with TOPO maps. It's -invaluable-.
  14. I believe that version 4.06 of the firmware supports BlueNav charts. Does that include the tidal information? If so, you could simply load 4.06 on your MeriPlat to get what you want.
  15. Yup! That's where most marriages end up... Like mine for instance. On the bright side, I get to keep my GPS!

  17. alexm ... That's a good thing to know. I didn't think of trying that out before I attempted to upload 3.12 over 4.06. It resulted in killing the GPS entirely w/o any recourse other than sending the unit to Magellan for reprogramming... Live and learn
  18. My main GPSr is a Magellan Meridian Platinum with a 64 MB SD card and MapSend TOPO US. I love this unit for a number of reasons: it works very well even under heavy cover, the detailed TOPO info and the large screen are -invaluable- for car navigation and it's rugged. Its built-in compass is Ok for getting a general direction but I trust my lensatic compass a lot more. I highly recommend it. I also own a Garmin Gecko 201 as a backup GPSr (had to get it while my MeriPlat is in the shop due to a bad firmware downgrade ). I was amazed by the quality of this tiny device! It locks on sats quickly, it is WAAS capable and holds the lock quite well even under tree cover (better than a Vista under the same conditions as I found out today). I also highly recommend it as a simple but effective geocaching GPSr.
  19. Geez! Male or Female...Some people just have -way too much- spare time...
  20. Another victim of the "Nuclear Wedgy" cache...
  21. If someone has v3.12 of the firmware for the Meridian Platinum, please email me. I'm trying to downgrade from 4.06 which has given me many headaches. Going back to 4.02 does not work and only sticks the GPS in a loop. Thanks in advance.
  22. Turns out that the only way to get out of this mess was to upload 4.06 again... For some reason, I'm unable to go back to 4.02 w/o getting 'stuck' in a loop when the GPS starts back up. I'd like to drop back to 3.12 if someone still has it.
  23. I had so many weird problems with 4.06 that I decided to downgrade to 4.02 (btw, if you still have a copy of 3.12, email me). Before uploading 4.02 I did a "Reset All". The upload of 4.02 completed successfully. Trouble is that when I power the GPS back on, I never get the chance to finish the initialization and after just 3 seconds, the main "Magellan Screen" comes back. I tried uploading the firmware again to no avail. Is there a way out of this w/o sending the GPS to the manufacturer? Any help would be appreciated.
  24. If you have a black light, make sure to give the 'Ghost Trail' cache a try: Ghost Trail [black Light Only]
  25. I've got a MeriPlat that I recently loaded with 4.06. I'm not sure that I'm going to stick with it... Today, while placing a cache, I got incredible position errors (100+ feet) from a run done just the previous day with about the same atmospheric conditions (clear days). Even waypoints recorded today and averaged for 10 minutes were about 50+ feet off. I'll be testing things some more before downgrading the firmware, but what I've seen so far has freaked me out a bit.
