  1. Lost my 60cx, so looking at the Oregon 450 but my major reason for having a GPS is for snowmobiling. I used my 60cx with heavy gloves on and that was great in bad conditions. Worried about having a touchscreen in those conditions----snow blowing all over and COLD. Do you have to use a bare finger or can you activate the screen using thin gloves?
  2. Didn't want to take over someone else's post, so here's mine... I have a Garmin 60cx and 100K topo from a couple years ago when it came on CDs instead of a DVD. I am considering upgrading to the 24K topo, but I can't understand what I would actually be getting. The 100K topo's contours look pretty jagged on the 60 cx screen. Is the 24K Topo going to look better on the screen (also more detail)? Is the 24K Topo routable in the same way that City Navigator works? I assume there are no POIs in the topo. Does the 24K Topo have unlock codes (and only 2 come with it)?
  3. Orienteering, Are you saying the Topo 24K features auto-routing, similar to City Navigator? I am trying to decide whether to upgrade from Garmin Topo 100K to the 24K----any big difference?
  4. Found this finally after trying to use SEARCH again. It looks like the 1 Gb cards are pretty much worthless for topo because the map limit of 2025 happens WAY sooner......I thought I would've caught onto this issue before I purchased the larger cards, but apparently not to many users think the map limit is too low. rstickle post Nov 25 2006, 07:49 AM Post #10 Geocacher The current real limit is map segments. You can only load 2025, no matter what size memory card you are using. I'm currently using a (Sandisk) 2GB card with all of CN8 and some selected topo maps on it. If you are loading a whole bunch of topo maps go with a 512 or 1 GB since you will run up against the map segment limit long before reaching a actual memory limit. Hope this helps. Rick
  5. Regardless of the total size of the data, if I remember correctly, you are limited to 2050 maps. I guess that would make sense, because I forgot to mention that I don't get all of the Alaska topo either, it just has some random areas like it was going through in alphabetical order and just stopped. If this is the situation, then I guess it makes 1 Gb cards completely worthless for topo. If I put only topo on the card, I would probably have 4,000 maps......double the 2050 you mention. I thought I would've seen a lot of complaining about that on the forum. Thanks for the info.
  6. I thought remembered seeing something on here about a maximum number of map segments when loading maps through Mapsource, but than again I've heard of folks having success loading 2 Gb cards and I'm only loading a 1Gb card. I am trying to put Topo and City Nav V8 NT for the western US and Alaska (incl Canada City Nav maps) together on a 1 Gb card using a card reader. There are 3216 total maps that add to 930.1 Mb. First I tried 960 Mb and it said the capacity of the card was only 952 Mb. After reducing down to 930.1 Mb, the maps appear to be loaded with success (the software asks for Western US topo CD and then Alaska/Hawaii CD and the City Navigator maps are on the list also. When I put the card in my 60cx and fire it up, only the topo maps show up in the list where you can hide/show the different maps. Why am I missing the City Nav maps??? I tested it doing only 1 state, topo and city nav together, and it works as it should (of course much smaller file size and number of maps). THANKS
  7. I unlocked the second unit on my City Navigator V8 NT software and entered the unlock codes into Mapsource. When I create the maps and load them to a microSD card using a card reader, are the maps automatically compatible with both units serial numbers? I cannot find anything that I would have to specify which of the two units the maps are for. I don't have the second unit with me to be able to test the card, so I am wanting to know ahead of time if it is going to work. THANKS
  8. JennyW, Great purchase you just made for your father. My father and I both have the same thing. I think your dad would enjoy having both the topo and city navigator map sets since he hunts. I agree that geocaching only probably does not justify topo depending where you're geocaching. I recently purchased both software map sets and asked on this forum if I had found the cheapest prices. These are what I came up with. City Navigator North America NT (Version 8) DVD @ planetgps.net OUT OF STOCK 106.95 free shipping Next best price: 108.99 + shipping Mapsource Topo @ Amazon.com 64.99 Free Shipping You can buy Mapsource Topo used because the CDs do not require anything special like an unlock code. The prices used on Ebay are very close to the Amazon.com price. You do not want to buy the City Navigator DVD used because the software requires an unlock code, in which you acquire over the internet, and it is associated with your 60cx unit's serial number. You can only unlock the software for two GPS units, so if your dad unlocked it the first time and then lost his GPS, he would be able to unlock it one more time for the new unit's serial number. I also just bought a screen protector from InvisibleShield---it is supposed to be the best of the best and is 40% off now, so it's 5.97. Go here and type in "Garmin 60" where it says FIND A SHIELD.
  9. Try this link instead, it worked for me yesterday to get 40% off. http://www.shieldzone.com/40off
  10. Use this link for 40% off............for example a Garmin 60 series shield normally $10 for $6.
  11. Castanea indeed gives good advice. That's what I have is the Garmin 60cx with Mapsource City Navigator Version 8 and Mapsource Topo. Here are some recommendations of where to purchase them cheap. Garmin 60cx from Buy.com $285.23 (after $50 garmin rebate and $20 off using Google Checkout) City Navigator North America V8 NT from PlanetGPS.com $106.95 Mapsource Topo from Amazon.com $67.99 ALL WITH FREE SHIPPING!!! Total: $460.17 Don't forget about a 1Gb micro SD card or two. Usually another $40-50
  12. wyomingwapiti, I've researched the same thing for my dad, who lives just over the hill from you on Union Pass. He got a 60csx and I have a 60 cx. It appears that RAM mounts are the way to go. Here are some threads with pictures of just about every kind of mount you could think of. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...8227&hl=RAM http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...6185&hl=RAM A good place to purchase RAM mounts from is GPScity.com You can either buy the packages that include all the parts together, or mix and match parts to produce something unique like I was trying to do in the first thread above.
  13. I haven't read the reviews lately on Buydig.com, but I bought a $600 digital camera from them following a friend's recommendation and had no problems at all.
  14. City Navigator North America V8 NT $124.49 +free shipping @ Buydig.com $108.99 + about $10 shipping @ BoatersIsland.com Mapsource Topo $67.99 + free shipping @ amazon.com
  15. I don't have one yet, but when I buy a case it will be this one. It's form-fitting and covers the ENTIRE unit. http://www.cartom.virtual-space.com/gps.htm
  16. I'd like to mount my 60cx in two vehicles and be able to go back and forth easily. The two options I've come up with are: 1) Ezy-mount system using quick release parts and adhesive disk base in each car. 2) Locking suction cup with adhesive disk in each car (don't want to use windshield). I haven't seen this combination anywhere, but by putting together the parts it seems possible. Any experience with this sort of thing? Seems like a great setup, but I wonder if the quick release connection is sturdy or prone to vibration? (Prices are from GPScity.com) Here's the suction cup mount that might be most flexible in case I want to use it in a different car with no base on the dash. Any experience with mounting the suction cup to an adhesive base?
  17. I'm looking at buying a Garmin cradle and mount for my 60 cx. If I use the cradle on a bean bag mount and my dash is sloped, I might need to pivot the GPSr toward me or away from me depending on the viewing angle. Here's a photo from another member who has a flat dash, but picture having a dash that slopes away.......does the nob at the bottom of cradle allow me to pivot the unit toward me? THANKS
  18. I am a Civil Engineer and work with surveyors all the time. I worked for the Wyoming Dept of Transportation suryeying for 3 summers during college. I would definitely recommend the career, sometimes I wish I would've become a licensed surveyor instead of licensed engineer for the fact that I wouldn't be stuck in the office behind a computer as much if I was surveying. Don't get the wrong idea, surveying doesn't get you outside where you want to be and in the weather that you choose, but it would still get you outside. A bad day outside is always better than a good day in the office. It appears that you are not traditional college-age, so going to school full-time for surveying might not be an option. I should back up, I would highly recommend getting the a degree and the proper training so you can become a Licensed Surveyor if that's what it looks like you want to do after starting a job. You can get your license quicker in the long run by getting a degree plus on-the-job experience, than you can just by on-the-job experience. I don't know what is available in your state or area, but for instance where I went to college there was an outreach program for surveying. People were taking the classes through outreach from a 3 or 4-state area. Take the tests and mail them in, or probably by internet now. Here is a link to the outreach program at the University of Wyoming. http://outreach.uwyo.edu/ocp/landsurveying.asp
  19. OH NOOOO. The case posted here is just the type I wanted to find (too bad I ordered from Ebay already) http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=147375
  20. I just ordered a nylon case like this from EBay for $10 incl shipping. It fits many models like GPSV, Rhino, etc. so it might not be very form fitting and is not real heavy if it's nylon. http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp?sku=010%2D10117%2D02 I might get one of these cases (neoprene or rubbery) and use the nylon case over the top. I wonder if the clear material on these cases gets so scratched that you don't want to use it? http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-R60N-GPSMap-N...p;s=electronics http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Protective-Ca...p;s=electronics Sources on this forum and elsewhere have said the Motorola RAZR car charger works the 60 series GPS. The Garmin model is only $14 on Buy.com, so I don't think I'll take my chances with anything else. Get a case or something else that adds to $30, create a Google Checkout account, and get $10 off your order before October 31. http://www.buy.com/retail/electronics/prod...049011&wl=1 I'm looking for deals on 1 Gb microSD cards to be around $15-20. I missed a deal on PNY cards for 19.95 after rebate that ended yesterday. When I find a great deal, I'll post on the forum.
  21. Edit: they appear to be moving the little green free shipping trucks around on the site. I just went through the process above to make sure it all still works and the little green truck is gone (it's on other garmin products still) They are charging $6.52 for shipping now. Thanks for the tip. I failed to mention I'm looking at a 60csx now, which is what the price I mentioned is for. It happens to have the free shipping currently.
  22. fsumarc, How did you know you were getting the $15 off for new customer? I can't see where it says that, but I am thinking about ordering the same model and wanted to get it straight ahead of time. Thanks FYI---the next best deal I have found is for 369.00+14.99 2-day shipping, then minus the $50 rebate Total ends up 334.99 http://store.wmjmarine.com/c25528.html
  23. I'm headed to buy a Garmin 60cx tonight, just because of the topo maps containing minor roads/trails that Magellan doesn't show. I plan to leave my hard copy maps at home most of the time, and after looking at the webviewers for MapSource and MapSend, there was no doubt that Garmin is the right one for me. The road names are not shown as complete with the Garmin, but at least they are shown.
