  1. Well I thought I had this sold to someone here on the forums but they decided to flake out on me, so its' going back up for sale. I have a Legend HCx that is in great shape, very minor wear and functioning properly in all aspects. It also comes with a 2GB SD card loaded with City Navigator 2010 so you can do turn by turn navigation on the unit. Also included with be a windshield suction cup mount and a bicycle handlebar mount. The unit works great, I'm just trying to get together some funds to purchase a new Oregon unit. I'd like to get $150 (shipped) for everything. If you're interested please contact me through the forums, or directly by email at tylerbrower@gmail.com. Thanks for looking!
  2. What's your price range? I have a Legend HCX with city navigator, a bike mount, and a windshield mount if you're interested. Drop me a PM and let me know what you're looking to spend.
  3. I totaly disagree with this statment. I think that 5 stars means "most difficult". The special equipment is a side bar. A cache that is a 2 day hike including a 1800m elevation gain 'difficult' scramble is a 5 star. The fact that no 'special' equipment is needed is compleatly irrelevent. I think the issue here is that most cachers would never even consider doing a trip like that, so the only way they can think of getting 5 stars is with special equipment. Ok, maybe I misspoke when I said only. But even the clayjar rating says 5's are for caches that require special equipment, OR that are extremely difficult. So for the vast majority of caches, only those requiring special equipment are actually a 5.
  4. Sounds like it should be a 4.5. If it is possible to get to the cache site by hiking, then there is no special equipment required. The 4.5 rating will let the seeker know that it is the hardest rating available without needing special equipment, so they're in for a challenge. Terrain 5 caches should ONLY be used if special equipment is required, such as scuba gear, climbing/repelling gear, etc. Terrain ratings seem to be the rating that people have the hardest time placing on their caches. I've found terrain 4's that I've parked 80' away from in my stock Tacoma TRD, and found 3's that took me 4 hours to hike to.
  5. I think I disagree with most here. I say get an ammo can or equally rugged container that will last, and place it where its well hidden and not going to harm anything in the area. If the cache is as remote as you state, its unlikely that anyone would make it out there more then once every few years. But if its also as beautiful as you say, the one or possibly two finders who find it a year are really going to appreciate it. Being here in Nevada we have many caches that are "out in the middle of nowhere". These caches tend to last forever, simply because there is never anyone around to harm them, their only enemy being the elements. They are also some of the most rewarding caches to get to. The cachers that also tend to find these styles of caches also seem to be much more likely to repair the cache if they find something wrong with it. I think they are extremely different than a "vacation" style cache thats placed in an area where they are likely to muggled.
  6. Any chance you'd care to share your plans for that? I have a multi I've been working on and that would fit my theme perfectly!
  7. I have a Legend HCX thats in good shape, been using if for caching, but the only flaws are a few very minor scratch. Other than that its perfect. It has a 2gb SD card loaded with City navigator, and I can put topo maps on there for you as well for your area. I can include a car charger, bicycle mount, and vehicle windshield mount for $160 if you're interested. Let me know what you think.
  8. I had scratched my old Otterbox case after 2 years of use, and the Otterbox company and their amazing customer service replaced it for me. Problem is I just got the Iphone 4 and sold my 3G, so I have no use for the case now. Its the black on black and is brand new in the box (plastic clamshell?). If you're not familiar these cases are amazing, I'm tough on equipment and my 3G lasted 2 years with me and looks like it did the day I took it out of the box, after surviving many drops and bumps while geocaching with it. First $30 (shipped!) takes it.
  9. I completely agree, I'm preordering the 4 on tuesday, my 3G is getting a little tired. Even if the gps reception in the 4 is greatly improved, having a waterproof case and extra capacity battery would make the whole set up ideal.
  10. The iphone has a gps, and while it gets the job done, its not on par with a good handheld. And yes this case makes the iphone not only weatherproof but waterproof, where the iphone by itself is pretty susceptible to weather. What I'm HOPING this item does, it turn the iphone into a unit with the same gps reception and durability as a hand held unit.
  11. I think there's definitely a market, granted a small market, but a market nonetheless. I'm currently shopping for a new GPS and the two front runners right now are the garmin oregon 450/550 and the gpsmap62. But now that this item is coming out I'm seriously considering it. I'm assuming that there will have to be some sort of gps software to interface with the gps hardware, very similar to magellans road mate setup for the iphone. So now I can have all the features I want in one consolidated unit, camera, video, wi-fi, cellular network, voice recorder, mp3 player, etc. Whereas if I go with a hand held unit, I'm now carrying around my phone anyways, plus a handheld unit. I currently carry around my iphone 3g in an otterbox case which is pretty good size, plus a legend hcx, so if I could trade off to a unit this size that has everything I'd be stoked.
  12. I'm in the market for a new GPS, and have been shopping the Oregons, and now the gpsmap 62. I have to say that this case is going to be in the running, although I need to see more detail. If I could have wifi, camera, video camera, cell data service, instant satellite imagery, downloaded imagery, phone, mp3 player, and the same gps accuracy, battery life, and durability as a handheld all in one unit I'd be pretty happy. Especially if the unit has replaceable batteries, If I could swap batteries in the field this may possibly be the ultimate geocaching device.
  13. I definitely like your spirit on hiding a cache, I just think you need a little bit better understanding of the game before you place your cache. My advice to you is to do a PQ that results in higher difficulty caches, start at like 3/3 and work your way up. Go out and find those caches and see what you like and dont like, and then start to develop your cache based on that. Personally I love more difficult caches, especially ones that involve more than just following your GPS to ground zero. The problem with those caches are they also require a ton more planning to implement and get right. Hook up with some local cachers and have them suggest some difficult caches as well, or have them tell you which ones didn't work and go get all of them. Experience finding is the key to making a great hide.
  14. "Happy wife...happy life" Haha, very true. Well I watched the movie last night, definitely thought it was entertaining. It's obviously marketed towards the 18-35 crowd, and some may be turned off by the language. I myself cuss like a sailor (maybe because I used to be one) so no worries there. Of course the geocaching info was a little off, for example she has a gps and is looking for a cache, they get to a field and spread out and look for it. But they definitely got the spirit of geocaching captured. While it wasn't the best movie I've seen in the past year, I felt it was way better than some of the turds I've paid 9.50 to go see in the theater. Definitely worth the rent! Oh, and Netflix has it, if you're not a member they offer a two week trial, sign up for the trial and get the movie, then just cancel the membership!
  15. One of our local (semi-local anyways) geocachers teaches classes for snowshoeing through REI, and highly recommends the MSR Denali's. They use them in their rental fleet and said they hold up very well to the abuse of being rental. Being able to add and remove the tail is a huge bonus. I'm a bigger guy, so I bought some big shoes to be able to accommodate for my size plus a pack, but when its fairly packed snow they're way too big and get clumsy. It would be nice to be able to pull the tails off when conditions call for it
  16. To be honest, after reading all these replies I'll start logging all my efforts to find as a DNF, even if I feel that I didn't put forth a good effort. I only have a few hides, so its good to hear the opinions of more experienced hiders. I think getting a DNF log even if someone only halfheartedly tried to find the cache can be valuable feedback. Even if someone drove up, said they didn't like the hide location and drove off can let you know maybe you have a bad hide. See. A thread that actually made a difference hahaha
  17. Fair enough, I can definitely see your point on that. And I have to admit that I have increased my DNF logging for basically that reason, just to make sure that caches are kept up. I guess my line of reasoning was that "Did Not Find" insinuated that you put out at least a half a** effort to look. Otherwise it would be a "Did Not Look'
  18. I usually always log my DNF's and I hope people do the same for my caches. The reason I say "usually" is if I feel I didn't spend adequate time looking for a cache I wont log a dnf. I feel dnfs are nessacary for upkeep on a cache, and to let reviewers know when caches haven't got the required maintenance from owners. So sometimes if I get to a cache and its in a juniper bush, in an area I dont feel comfortable, or I just dont feel like putting a ton of effort into it, I feel its unfair to post a dnf for a cache just because I personally dont like it. I also know alot of people who will filter out caches that have a dnf as the last log, so posting a dnf out of dislike might keep some of those people for looking for a cache they may enjoy.
  19. Everyone plays the game different and there are different types of caches to suit everyones way of playing. I think that if multis get changed to a smilie per stage they would get abused to where there are caches every 50ft since there is no restriction between stages. There are a couple "multi's" here in our area (Reno, NV) that are a traditional for the first stage, then each stage after that is a puzzle cache. You go to each stage and it gives clues to the next. This might be a solution to the point for each stage problem. It still keeps the spirit of a multi, allows the ALR's of puzzles, but you still get the smilie for each cache. Personally I absolutely love a great multi, for me I get much more satisfaction out of finding a fun and difficult multi, than finding 30 LPC's. I think if you're that concerned about numbers go on a traditional run.
  20. I got my copy in the mail yesterday from Netflix, haven't watched it yet though, My wife voted to watch American Idol last night. Even though it was a one to one vote, somehow her vote carried more weight.
  21. Out here in the desert you're pretty likely to find shell casing close to non-urban caches, so a casing without any marking would probably look like random junk like many have said. I think it would be cool if you polished them up real quick, then maybe put a sticker on them with a cool design. You can buy sticker sheets cheap at craft stores, and print them on a color printer. Maybe put the sticker on then hit the shells with a coat of clear so they dont tarnish again. Personally I think that would be a pretty slick sig item. It shows your interest outside of geocaching, and is definitely different than the standard wooden coins.
  22. We can hope that that is the case. I know that those who cache in the area would like to see an end to the piracy. I noticed at the end of the article it stated something along the lines of "calls to his employers have not been returned". I'm sure his work, especially the US government isn't super happy about one of their high end engineers being arrested for theft.
  23. Yeah, thats pretty much what I figured.
  24. So I've been thinking about changing my username, the one I have I never really intended to be permanent, just used it to log on and check things out the first time. I looked up the username I would like to change too, but its already been taken, but its by a user who found one cache in 2004, and hasn't logged on since then. Any chance an old inactive username like this could be erased so I could take it over?
  25. My netflix account shows the release date as 2-23, it might be available in stored today though. I know geoswag.com just posted on facebook that the movie is now available through them.
