  1. I've got a question about the symbols on my Venture Cx. I use GSAK and Cachemate. Typically, I build a pocket query. Then when I receive it in my email, I open it in GSAK. From there I send the waypoints to my Venture Cx. I then export them to Cachemate, sync my Palm Z22 and the caches go to the Palm. When I look at the caches on my Venture Cx, most show up as closed trewasure chests (the ones I haven't found), but a few always show up as blue flags, which are waypoint symbols. Is there something I can do to them in GSAK before I send them to the GPS to make them all treasure chests? Thanks Fred
  2. I was facing the same dilemma several months ago. I needed a GPS for a number of uses. I ended up with a Venture CX. I've been really quite pleased with it. It does lose satellites sometimes in tree cover, but that hasn't really been a problem. Now I'm afraid that I'm going to wear it out, so I bought a Garmin Mariner (similar to the eTrex Yellow) on the Garage Sale last week. One thing I've noticed though... I know that there are a lot of 60CSX owners out there, but have you noticed that a large percentage of posts on this forum are about problems with the 660CSX?
  3. I upgraded my Venture CX to 2.7 a couple of months ago. I immediately discovered that I could only rarely find caches after the upgrade, and when I did, they were 40-60 from where my GPS said they should be. I "downgraded" to 2.6 and I am once again walking right to the caches. Lesson learned... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Fred
  4. Actually, if you will go to the SETUP menu and choose DISPLAY, you will see options for DAYTIME (yellow screen), NIGHTTIME (black screen) or AUTOMATIC. Just choose the one you like. You can also change the colors of each screen if you want to.
  5. I've got a similar problem. I just bought a notebook PC to take on the road with me when caching. My "main" computer is a desktop running Windows XP Pro. All of the notebooks available use Vista. Does anyone know how I can sync my contacts, calendar and Cachemate on BOTH computers? I tried installing the Palm software on te Vista notebook. It says that it synched, but I can't find anything on the notebook.
  6. I've had my Venture CX since December and have marveled at how close it hasa taken me to the caches. Then I installed 2.70 and found myself lost. When I would find caches, they would be 30-40 feet from ground zero. I deleted 2.70 and reverted back to 2.60 and my problems appear to be solved. I'm once again finding caches at ground zero. Fred
  7. I've had a Venture CX since December. When I bought the unit in December, the first thing I did was to load version 2.40 (I think) of the unit software from the Garmin website. I use the GPS for geocaching, and have been amazed at how accurate it has always been. When the unit zeros out, I can usually find the cache within 5 or 6 feet. A few weeks ago I saw that someone on this forum had installed a new unit software release (2.70). Likewise, I went straight to Garmin and installed the version 2.70 software too. Now when I am caching, I am 60-80 ft from the cache when it zeros out (if I can even find the cache). The compass needle starts spinning crazily at 30-40 feet from zero. Today I was in a clear, unobstructed area. I laid the unit down on a concrete wall, let it sit there for a few minutes, and then created a waypoint without picking up the unit. Then I walked 60-80 feet away and tried to navigate to it. When I was at the original waypoint spot, the unit said that I had 37 feet to go. Has anyone else had this problem? Will a hard reset fix the problem? It's frustrating to try to cache with an inaccurate GPS. Fred
  8. I've got a question for the experts out there. I've been using my Etrex Venture CX since December. I use it for a lot of things such as exercise (walking), trip planning, geocaching, and golf. One of the first things I did with it was to mark a waypoint at the center of each green on the course that I am a member at. I then created a route to hole 1, hole 2, hole 3, etc. One of the guys at the course asked me about how I knew the yardage to each hole from wherever I was. After I explained it to him, he went out and bought a Magellan GPSr (I don't know the model number yet). My question is... is there a way to transfer the waypoints that I have to a Magellan GPSr? Can I write them to a disk and allow him to load them into his Magellan GPSr? Thanks in advance. I know that you guys will provide the information that I need. Fred
  9. Also... check to see if you are using the Battery Saver mode. Mine works much better in tree cover, and the screens are much more stable when I use Normal mode instead of Battery Saver mode. The batteries last a ton of time anyway. And be sure that you are set for the correct battery type. Fred
  10. Somehow I lost a most of my waypoints recently. I loaded a PQ into the GPSr, and all of the caches are there. But I also had about 60 other waypoints (not caches). They are gone, but I had saved them onto maps on my PC. When I transfer the waypoints back to the GPSr, some go, but most do not. When I click FIND, WAYPOINTS, I get a list of a few waypoints, and a buch of caches. I'm sure that I am well below the 500 max. Does anyone know what I should do next? Thanks!
  11. I have the Venture CX. I bought the USB cable at a Dollar Tree store for $1.00. You can get a 1 gb micro SD for about $10 bucks. Other than that, color is the only difference.
  12. Pay It Forward. That was a great movie and a great concept. Can you imagine (as John Lennon would say) what the world would be like if at least 50% of the people subscribed to that theory?
  13. Also... here is another one for $304 that will ship to Canada. http://cgi.ebay.com/GARMIN-GPSMAP-60CX-OUT...1QQcmdZViewItem
  14. This place has them for $296. If you haven't alrerady used Google Checkout, you can get another $10 instant savings. http://www.thenerds.net/index.php?page=pro...p;pn=0100042100 I haven't bought from this place before, but they seem to have all of the best credentials at the bottom of the page. Fred
  15. Another option would be to load the Topo maps onto 1 of your (2) 512mb cards, and then load the Metroguide maps that you want onto the other 512mb card. Then you can just swap cards when you want to change maps.
  16. Hank- If you go to this site http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56474 they have the files that you are looking for in the format that you need. Fred
  17. NightPilot- Thank! USB0 was the correct answer. As soon as I plugged it into that I heard music. I already had the Palm Desktop installed. I'll check out Brighthand Forums. Since I didn't get a manual with this (I'll download it from Palm), I'm sure that I'll have other issues. Thanks again!
  18. I just received a Palm Z22 that I won from Ebay. It didn't come with the software, but I downloaded the Palm OS from Palm, com. When I ran the install, and the PC (running XP Professional) tried to Hotsync, it wouldn't do it. I hear the Windows sound for connection/unconnecting every few minutes, until I eventually get a message on the Z22 saying that the Hotsync failed. I tried the troubleshooting guide on the Palm website; but no luck. I also performed a hard reset of the Palm. I'm frustrated. Any help would be appreciated. Fred
  19. I'm pretty new to this. I've heard of pocket queries from reading posts. I've ordered a PDA, upgraded to Premium Member status, and I've installed GSAK. What's next? I see that being able to do pocket queries is a benefit to becoming a Premium Member, but I don't see any information on how it is done. A little help please? Fred
  20. Amazon.com has it for $109, and it qualifies for freee super-saver shipping. I bought mine for the same price at Provantage, but I paid 8 bucks for shipping, and I didn't pay sales tax since I live in Texas. I also have a Kingston 1gb micro SD. You can load the entire contiental US onto the 1gb micro SD. I left off Puerto Rico since I'm not likely to go there anytime soon. My GPSr is the same as yours. It's a Venture CX. I already had the US Topo loaded onto another SD (as much as I could load), but the City Navigator NT 8 is what I am using most. The routing, tiurn by turn directions, the ability to find POIs like gas staions, restaurants, etc make it a joy to use. Have fun! Fred
  21. Actually, I paid to become a Premium Member last week. I paid the annual rate, but I notice that when I post a message, the Premium Member designation doesn't appear. Does anyone know how to email the management of this website? Thanks Fred
  22. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I bought a Palm Z22 off of Ebay last night. If it doesn't siut me, I'll sell it and get something else. What's the next step for paperless caching? What I've been doing is printing out the information with 5 logs, and taking them with me. I use Easy GPS to send the caches to my Venture CX. Now do I need GSAK, Cachmate, something else? It's been rather breezy here lately, and I'm tired of chasing these loose sheets down the street. Thanks again! Fred
  23. Ok. I'm tired of buying printer ink. What is a good PDA to send the cache information to so that I don't wander around the country with this stack of papers blowing around in the wind? Also, what software will I need with a recomended PDA to achieve my goal of going paperless? Ebay has a ton of Palm Z-22 units for around $50-$60 plus shipping at $5-$15. Are these good deals? Thanks! Fred
