  1. Thanks, I hadn't seen that. But surely there is more to the story? BTW, for Jeremy, the link on the Credits page that leads to Mike Teague's website is outdated. I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  2. I'm sure this has been answered before, but a forum search for 'geocaching origin' and 'geocaching beginning' doesn't seem to yield the answer. So, how did it start, and who started it? At what point did it cease being a local 'treasure hunt' and become what we now know of as Geocaching? Thanks a lot all, Aristo I've been going in circles my whole life. 3. Man with one speedometer always knows what speed he travels. Man with two speedometers never knows what speed he travels. - Confucious I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  4. My dog, a black lab, occasionally escaped from the yard and disapeared for a while, sometimes for as long as two days. So I put my Legend in a calculator case, hung it from her collar and gave her the chance to poof. When she showed up a couple of hours later (and five pounds heavier), I took the GPS from the case and examined the track log. Incredibly enough, the odometer showed that the dog had traveled more than 14 miles in the short time she had been gone. I followed the tracks back to a point that seemed to be the common denominator in her journey, and ended up at a house about three blocks away. It turns out the old guy who lives there has been feeding the dog, taking her for rides in the front seat of his Volvo, and allowing her to sleep with him in his bed. Frankly, I think it's a wonder she ever came back home at all. Now he calls me when she shows up, but still won't let me come get her until they've taken a spin around the neighborhood. I swear, it's like living in Mayberry I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.

  7. <<<<>>>> Can the software in the yellow be updated? Check the Garmin site. I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  8. The only thing I know to do it to send it to Garmin. They have a flat rate repair price. I'm not sure exactly but I think it's about $60.00 for the Legend. Check Garmin.com I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  9. Also, when you get it, check the unit's sofware version. If it isn't 2.50, go to the Garmin site and update. The latest version allows you to display your name and contact info on the startup page in case the unit gets misplaced. No password protection yet, though. I've been going in circles my whole life. 10. I have used Paypal for several hundred Ebay and other transactions, but there are some precautions that should be taken. This website (Paypalwarning.com) explains it better than I can. Athough now that they are owned by Ebay, things ought to get better. I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  11. True, but, IMHO, virtuals are mostly lousy too, but there are plenty of people who hunt them. Give the commercials their own section, like benchmarks. If a company wants to hide a cache, whether on or off their property, and are willing to pay the fee to have it posted to this site, again, why not? I bet Home Depot would have some really neat cache goodies. Or think of the fun we could have with a Victoria's Secret cache. I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  12. On my Legend, the little bars that show the satellite signal strength are gray until they lock on to the bird, then they turn black. Sounds like normal operation to me. I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  13. I'm new here, so maybe this has been discussed before, but why not allow commercial caches to exist, but charge them a reasonable fee for the service? This would allow more caches in different places, and would provide even more income for the geocaching site. I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.

  15. < This thread covers that Thread < On the page you write the post, there are emoticons just over the Subject Line you can pick to go in front of the logs. Also, to get them in the text, just click on the emoticons in the 'Instant Graemlins' box. They will appear at the location of your cursor in the text box. You can add a link by clicking on the URL button in the 'Instant UBBCode' box. Bold, Italics, and other options are also available there. Hope this helps. I've been going in circles my whole life. 16. Ok, thanks, I'll make a note on the page to tell people to use DDMMSS. Next time, I'll figure it using decimal degrees. Later all...Aristo I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  17. Hi all, I just hid my first cache, a multi, and I'm wondering if I did it right. At each leg you have to do some minor math to reach the next leg, and I used DDMMSS rather than decimal degrees. Since most people seem to use decimal, should I go back and re-figure the math using decimal? It was found today for the first time, so I know it can be done. Thanks all, Aristocracker Cache Page I've been going in circles my whole life. May as well make a hobby of it.
  18. I got my Legend on Ebay for $145 with shipping, that's about as cheap as I've seen them. My advice is to decide which GPS you want, then do an ebay search for that model. You can even have them email you when that model is listed. Be patient, read the seller's feedback, don't get emotionally involved in the auction, there are PLENTY of GPS units on ebay.
  19. {{{{{{{Ultimately I'd like to find a case that is designed for holding batteries, and can hold 4 AA's and 4 AAA's at the same time.}}}}}}} Radio Shack has plastic battery holders for electronic projects. You could get the AA and the AAA holders and tape them together. You might want to cut the conductors between the the terminals in the holders so the batteries will be electrically isolated, but with no load, it really shouldn't matter.
