Etrex 20 and even the Etrex H do a commendable job even without differentials acting. Aircraft skins are a composite of many non structural materials including metal tubes and electrical cabling that are mainly unshielded for weight savings. E-compassed handhelds don't stand much of a chance when the motor block is several inches away.

Geocaching is not the main use of the etrex I own, but it is used for geocaching when on the ground. I do a lot of flying and for me the metal in the aircraft skin annoys the etrex compass and the etrex barometer in the pressurised cabin reads the cabin pressure! So for me the etrex 20 eliminates those specific items that will read wrong for my particular use. Oh and there is no stopping in aircraft so an etrex compass is superfluous to aviation needs.

My Etrex 20 shows this on the compass page when you select the more detailed pointer set-up..

Fractional/decimal settings should be allowed as a whole degrees seems too broad!

..just bought Etrex H for $49, brand new in box 2010 edition! Everything else is just bling!

To average quickly just place on ground == 1 minute!

Etrex 20, trying to input custom USER magnetic variation setting in Heading menu option but will not accept any minute or decimal fraction... ...just degrees only! What am I missing here?

What type of GPS are you using in your boat? ...not worth posting here as neither has anything to do the caching. Ok I have found out no thanks to the idiot last poster that the Etrex series is compatible with the 'G2' but not the 'G2 Vision' series of Blue-charts. Closed!

I just find it strange that the pages are pruned away at 3-4 pages but the stickies that reside here eternally are locked and completely out of date. I would have assumed that those posts worth saving would reside in these eternal threads, but alas no!

It's the non intuitive menu systems in Garmin that rot's my brain. It just does not make sense!

Yeah I paid for my map update but the download took forever and then failed again and again! Garmin won't return my calls or my money. Problem has been solved but no thanks to Garmin.
