  1. Huh? I just set it as a waypoint and select GO to it! Arrow will always point right at it up to when you are standing on top of it. Speed is not an issue as it works in a plane!
  2. What is GZ? This may help... http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/wgarmin.htm http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/wgarmin.htm
  3. Here is what I have on my 16 GB SD card (Etrex 20). Although I had to move some of the more unessential maps from the 'Garmin' folder to another folder 'Extras' on the card so as to not exceed the 3000 tile limit. But they are all there ready to go should I need them and they all work fine!
  4. Routes are fully explained here... http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/routes.htm http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/routes.htm
  5. I use UTM/UPS because locations can be instantly referenced on all topo maps while in the field, simple.
  6. @ $1,600 AUD for an Etrex H I can understand why you would want to upgrade. One week ago I bought a Garmin Etrex H for $57 AUD. Activating the service menu showed it had 10.5 hours of use, as new. Get onto ebay and just buy another one!
  7. Try here... all around $50. http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Garmin-eTrex-Legend-Handheld-GPS-Receiver-/82024020
  8. Just grabbed one on fleabay for $55! Service menu said it had been used for only 10.5 hours, lol. As new...
  9. LOL, what's the point of that! Two steps forward and the electronic compass is a waste of money... So I was right to get the 20! Save yourself some bucks guys, don't fall for the hype! PS: My Suunto compass doesn't have buggy softwares and works just fine @ 500+ kph...

  13. I admit that I have an Etrex 20 (v3.30) and I'm quite happy with it because I can run all my maps on it from the SD card! I didn't want the 30 as my pilot buddies said it was no good for aviation as the extra sensors didn't work accurately and the fact the electronic compass was continually in error requiring constant calibration made the unit down right dangerous to use for flight! Why would I want to pay an extra $120 for features I would prefer to disable! The 20 got it for me! -------------------- I just don't understand why Garmin don't make their GUI's and firmware open source and with user editing and customization softwares available to all. With such a large community of willing users and modders, let the users beta test and hot fix them for selves. Makes for better products with cured software in a quicker time than in-house! I still love my Etrex H (v3.10) better, 'less is more' on this classic!
  14. Don't waste your hard earned money on the 30 or the 20, both rather slow (USB v1) and clunky UI with immature buggy firmware and tiny screen. Eventually you will want to upgrade to a better 62s! Grab a 62S as it's a mature product with bigger screen, faster processor and USB v2. Also it has been around for a while so the software bugs have been sorted out completely! Good long term investment, easier to use, better firmware, more options, just a better overall product!
  15. Careful, it's not as simple as it seems... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=316376
  16. Don't get an Etrex 30 because the firmware is not perfected yet. Best get a 60S as it's a mature product with a bigger screen.
  17. Yeah, there are plenty of cheapies on fleabay. I have an Etrex 20 from new for $180 but I just picked up a basic Garmin Etrex H (yellow) for $50. It's a no BS car park and crab pot finder. No maps or colors to confuse you, just accurate Tracback answers! BRILLIANT.
  18. If you want sub meter accuracy for your GPS then you will need access to a land based 'line of sight' Differential transmitter or two in the immediate area of use, me thinks...
  19. Well I never, thanks sussamb!!!! I just moved all the not needed map imgs out into another folder called 'Extras' and hey presto, it worked. I think that only those imgs needed should be in the 'Garmin' folder and all others to be in another folder of another name. I guess the lack of any substantial or complete instruction manual could be the reason it's so hard to come to grips with it! ----------------------------- For those who want the low down on Garmin hand helds and the where's and why's on how to really operate them, then go here... http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/wgarmin.htm
  20. I never have more than two 'ENABLED' maps at any one time. They just reside in the SD card until the area they are needed for is travelled. Surely the tile limit does not apply to map img's not enabled in setup!? Tile limit only applies to those maps enabled in set-up, YES? @ that I will create another folder besides the GARMIN one and put the extra imgs there and see what happens. It's just that USB v1.0 is slow!!!
  21. Buy a Garmin new Etrex 20 or the matured 60s. QED
  22. Etrex 20 disappearing maps! Some Garmin CN maps are on the internal SD card but not all showing in setup. Here is a list of maps I have on my SD card and with the firmware version of 3.30 renaming is not a problem. What is happening is that I got the latest Navteq 2014.20 CN for Australia which loaded up OK and was able to be enabled in the setup map menu. But I have since changed it's name so that I won't be confused with a similar Sensis map that was loaded later, problem started after this. The later loaded Sensis img however never showed up in the map setup menu and now the Navteq img won't show up in the setup menu either. But they are still there in the SD card. Changing names back to original file names does not help! Do I have a similar map img conflict or is there something else going on here?
