  1. Ancient Rhodes had 3 main cities in the 11th century BC: Lindos, Ialyssos and Kameiros. The island was said to be born of the union of Helios the sun god and the nymph Rhode, and the cities were named for their three sons. In 408 BC the three cities united to form one territory and a new capital was built: the city of Rhodes. The platoni deer is the symbol of Rhodes. In ancient times the snake was the symbol of the city because they ran rampant on the island. Several stories claim that deer were brought to the island to kill the snakes. The eradication was successful, and today there are deer all over the island, but very few snakes. In honor of their service, deer became the symbol of the city. NOTE: another source I found says that the deer were brought to the island by crusaders to keep snake away from their camps. They didn't hunt or kill snakes, but the odor secreted by their antlers kept the snakes away. Never join a group while it is moving! Every city in the ancient times had a symbol so all her products could be recognized! Coins, pottery, even the official weights had this symbol to show that they are official goverment weights! To help a little, Athens as a symbol had... the owl! coins started to be coins when ancients started to punch their symbol on the metal pieces they used to trade, to show that it was checked about the purity and the weight of it and they were responsible for that! the first coin had the stamp symbol of a merchant! Later, the goverment of each city wanted to make things official and to show that they were responsible about the weight and the purity of the metal piece! so, the coin was born! doesn't this sound familiar??? How did geocoins started??? Of course, there were many other things and designs on coins! they didn't show all the time the symbol! rhodes in the 99% if not always, had the sumbol os main design or as a small stamp part of the design, depending when the coin was minted! Ancient coins usually had a god or a smaller god (a nymph for example), or ancient heroes, ancient mythological kings... in one side and on the other the symbol or whatever else! They always had the name or part of the name of the citizents they minted the coin! what I mean... in Rhodes, most of the times you will only see the PO (RO), but it doesn't mean Rhodes but Rhodion (Rhodians!) Later in hellinistic period they started puting the head of their king! Ancient Greek coins were the first that even had (not all!l), the name of the designer of the die of the coin! Some coins are real pieces of art!!! Some coins also had the name of the judge of the ruler at that time and by that it is easy to know when it was minted! Rhodes most of the times, had on one side had the head of nymph Rhodes (in copper coins), or the head of Hellios! Some cities used to have a kind of a joke as a symbol of their city.... and most of the times the joke had to do with the name of the city! For example.... Milos island had as symbol an apple (milo in greek)! So check again! When someone finds the correct answer, I will post a strange story about the Coins of Rhodes, and a photo to see one! Nope! The rose, also chosen as a symbol since the city had taken its name from the flower, (rodon), also appears on virtually all Rhodian coinage. It was a kind of a joke as I mentioned before! Coins of Rhodes are between the most beautiful coins of Ancient times! Just see a small example of a didrachm (2 drachma coin) of 250 BC! The "RODION" is above the rose and it doesn't show well! Now...there is a strange story about these coins! during medieval times, they thought that the head of Helios, just because it had rays, was actually the head of Jesus Christ! On the other side where the rose is, they thought that it was the Rose of Sharon, or as better known to the scitests ""HIBISCUS SYRIACUS". They also believed that these coins were actually the 30 pieces of silver Judas took to betray Jesus!! so, for some people, the coins of rhodes were cursed!!!! Later in modern times everything was "fixed", when acrheologist found that the 30 pieces of siver were probably shekel silver coins from the city of Tyros in Phoenicia, that were in use a lot, at that the time of Jesus! these shekel coins had God Melkart on one side and an eagle on the other! So... one question left from stage 3!!! Come on!! Diagoras Daughter (one of them) is famous for something she did!!! Ride safely!!! Now being back in Germany, we were very suprised, that our cache already seemed to be published by someone else some weeks later - " PROFITIS ILIAS, Archangelos, Rhodes " !! Never mind - if you are looking for a really fantastic view, you have to search this cache when you visit Rhodes (see our additional photos)!!! If you find a small glas container (hidden at N 36° 11.912 E 028° 06.828), you didn't find " PROFITIS ILIAS, Archangelos, Rhodes ", but our one. You have to keep on looking - it must be nearby!   22. Loose rock combined with a hill. A jeep would have been fine for what we were doing. MIGHT even work for pulling him up the hill, but we've got a line on a Land Cruiser to help up, hopefully it'll work. If nothing else we can winch it up with the hand winch (tethered to the landcruiser), hopefully that will give us enough purchase on the terrain. I'll try to get some pics of it before we pull it out though. And if you like I'll post the fully story here, now that I'm awake. Of course we need and want to hear the full Story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
