  1. Strangely enough, this has just happened to my eTrex vista, been using it to navigate around the Costa Blanca.
  2. I just got a Motorola A925 and as it has a GPSr of some sort built in. I'm wondering if any of you folk have found a use in geocaching for the technology? any ideas?
  3. Lidl and Aldi will surprise you every now and then, this year and last year they did an excellent range of hiking gear at amazing prices, I'm still using it. The unit looks configured for a car navigation system and may not be rugged enough for geocaching and may not be as useful for finding a lat/long position. Although I could be totally wrong about this.
  4. The fine folks at Country Walking magazine said that they were going to do an article on Geocaching, and I had a good look at the Pelican cases and the Otterboxes which I had previously only seen in pictures. Thanks to a Pelican case I now feel that my camera is safe from bashing and rainwater in my rucksack. www.peli.com
  5. I tried to find a graveyard cache this weekend and it left me with very definate views on this topic. For those of you that remember the "Modern Antiquary Website" affair you will remember the intensity of emotion roused by the fear of our hobby encroaching on sites held to be sacred by groups of people. Perhaps because I regularly visit my own family members since departed, or perhaps the disapproving glances of other visitors to the graveyard, I felt that I was not there for a fit and proper activity such as historical study or genealogy. I realise that some sites are so old as to only contain families long extinct, so visiting relatives will not be disturbed by the caching activity, but out of respect for the deceased and also to avoid caching picking up a negative image I would ask that cachers place caches outside the actual precincts of the churchyard or at the very least, in an area where no bodies are interred.

    Visiting Montreal

Many thanks for those! depending on weather and time I'll try and do some. Some of my co-workers who have never been to Canada before are desperate to make an excursion to Niagra Falls over the weekend that we have free, good idea or not? I know this is off thread but as you seem knowledgeable I thought I'd ask. Thanks again for the suggestions.
  7. Myself and a few co-workers are visiting Montreal on business in mid-Feb. We are unlikely to be able to get out of the city, are there any caches in the city that any of you could reccomend we try to find? Many thanks.
  8. I tried the midlet on my Sharp GX10i and gave myself a fright when it locked up and crashed. I'll try again but read the instructions properly next time.
  9. I'm sure this has been talked about before, but the new GPRS phones and their internet speed/big screens make this subject a lot more interesting. Can you get onto www.geocaching.com through GPRS/WAP?
  10. Having started this I'd better do some explaining. I was washing out a small jar (Jalapeno chillies if you must know) as I often use them for storing stuff in my workshop. I noticed that it was pretty thick and sturdy looking, it reminded me of a glass jar in another cache I'd found recently, which was secreted deep inside a pile of rocks and was clearly tough enough to withstand the rigours of the location, half way up a Welsh hillside, (a Schwarz spice jar if you must know). When I asked for advice on this topic I was asking in the manner of "Which containers apart from the ones I have already identified as easily tough enough to with stand the physical environment without breaking, and in a location where the refractive nature of the glass will not be a factor as it is semi-aquatic: and which I had already shown to the on-site park rangers: could you suggest. I was not asking "I can't see anything hazardous in using thin walled fragile glass containers in all and any cache locations without having carefully assessed the area and probable and possible hazards and consulted with the local Ranger service; could you point out any errors I might have made in this thought process. I might have expected replies such as " Fish paste jars, Cosmetic/Skin cream jars " and many other well engineered and robust containers. So now you know.
  11. They seem to work well in many hostile environments, and I'm trying them in my current caches, any input from other cachers? Addendum; Jam jars, pickle jars, Marmite with screw down lids, you get the picture...
  12. Has there been a major bout of amnesia on this message board, or have some people been on holiday and missed this thread? Have a look at this thread http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=6616058331&m=5616051&r=2026051#2026051 A cache in a pay to enter site is a commercial cache and is (or so I was told at the time) no longer acceptable. It was also pointed out that the EPCOT and other themepark caches were some sort of "Historical abberations" which slipped through the net but wouldn't be allowed today, they therefore wouldn't be a precedent for future caches.
  13. My last cache was trashed; and I got an idea from Phredd and Dotty for a cache in water tied to a cord, the cord being tied to a pier or boardwalk leg (credit also to Leemax for this idea). Do any cachers have advice or guidence on this type of cache? What containers are good? How did others get on? Any advice most welcome.
  14. Llandudno and Colwyn Bay public libraries have public access, and it's not too slow.
  15. Never mind leaking luncboxes and trashings, look at the perils of Australian Geocaching. http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=1516058331&m=2906041
  16. I thought that these photos were taken by a satellite, explains a plane in the shot.
  17. This stands for General Mobile Radio Service and Family Radio Service. I saw lots of people using thes in Orlando last year and wondered if I bought the same hand sets would they work over here as well?
  18. I had a cache trashed recently and I think that if you cache in an urban area that that is going to be a fact of life. I will look at my next cache with a view as to its longevity, I knew that my first cache was not going to last very long because it is in a busy park, I have to decide now, do I want my next cache to be one that lasts for years? if so I will place it well off the beaten track where only the informed and determined will find it, or I could place it in a busy are where the fun is altogether of a different kind. I recently tried to get Highest in Conwy by Leemax, and could not get a minute in which to grab the thing as I was surrounded by "Muggles" and though I could not get the cache, the thrill of the chase was a very important motivator and will have me back in a months time. I have read of some American caches that require a set of SCUBA gear to get to, they are unlikely to be trashed but are also unlikely to give any fun to many people, and for me, part of the fun of this hobby is reading about someone or a family having an afternoon of fun together chasing my cache, I know how much fun my family has and I like to feel that others enjoy themselves in a similar way. Re-build and replace your caches, life goes on.
  19. Do you think that the hint should be a "Spoiler" that gives it all away: or merely an extra clue?
  20. If you were like me and wanted to place a cache but didn't know enough sites , (other than the ones that already had caches in them) then have a look at www.walkingworld.com. Somebody will probably say that it is a commercial site but for those of us with little time available it is a goldmine of ideas. I think you get paid royalties if you submit a walk to the site, but I'd better double check that!
  21. On a slightly more serious note, why have my posts gone down to 2?
  22. On a non-serious note, do you have any items that are exclusively for Geocaching as in "These are my Geocaching trousers"? For my part I have a waistpack/bumbag that contains pens, ziplocks, trinkets, etc that only comes out for Geocaching trips.
  23. I am sure this has been done before, for which I apologise, but, I had a look at this package and it looked quite useful and then I saw the price WHAT!! Is it that good? Is it worth it? Can you reccomend it?
  24. I know what you mean, I took a lot of care selecting items to leave in a cache and to place in my own placed cache, and then you go out Caching in January and find a load of tat that has been obviously hoovered up from the Christmas dinner table as the naffest Christmas cracker contents and other cheap detritus! Conversly, I have been touched and impressed by some handmade simple items that have had a lot of thought and effort put into them. It's a microcosm of life, some people will float by doing a makeshift and shoddy job of it and others will put in the effort. This topic has been extensively discussed on the U.S. sections of the board. God bless all our service men and women in the middle east.
