  1. You are correct. If you use the file names as you have indicated the complete file name with extension must be: Texas24K.img, Florida24K.img, and TexasBlueChart.img. It is ok to have spaces in the name. All Mapsource files are transferred to your gps as gmapsupp.img so as long as you don't have an exisiting file named gmapsupp.img no map files will be over-written.
  2. Yes, you can download the gpsfiledepot maps and not hurt any functionality and almost all are free. I believe you can only utilize 2Gb of your memory card for maps in your Etrex Legend HCx unless a software update increased that to 4Gb; maybe someone else can be more definitive on this.
  3. The etrex model "Vista HCx" would be a very good unit that he wouldn't out grow for a long time. You could find good used ones on ebay a month ago for around $150 - $160; haven't looked in a few weeks at current used prices.
  4. You can purchase a Sandisk 4Gb micro SD memory card from Amazon --- Digital Media for around $8.50 and includes free shipping. I have ordered from Digital Media thru Amazon several times and never have had any problems, shipment always arrives in 4 days. Your 60CSx can utilize up to the 4 Gb of memory if you don't first reach the map tile limit.
  5. Unless something has changed with some software updates the only way to see the actual altitude (Mean Sea Level) in real time on Garmin GPSs that have the built in barometer in aircraft with a pressurized cabin is to view it on the "Satellite" page. The actual altitude can be recorded with the track but you won't be able to view it in real time. AFAIK this applies to all of the Garmin handhelds that have the built in barometer, 60CSx, 76CSx, Vista HCx, Colorados, Oregons, etc.
  6. I completely agree with you and have wondered why you don't here of more individuals that adhere to this philosophy for certain situations. Anytime you are planning an extended trip, such as a week-long hunting adventure, wilderness vacation, OHV trips, etc., where you won't have access to your PC, backing up your most important waypoints as Custom POIs is a great safeguard for either an accidental deletion of waypoints or that dreaded Master Reset that might have to be done in the field. Since, Custom POIs can only be modified or deleted via use of your PC you'll never loose them.
  7. Take a look at the Oregon wiki http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous#FAQ-M5.) specifically at Facts M4 & M5. Then on M5 fact go to the GPSFix link and download the Custom Profiles with the white backgrounds and colored borders. This will make it a lot easier to view. Then you can use MS Paint and add your Profile's name in the colored border at the top and bottom of the page and you can always easily see what profile you are in. You can do it just like the GPSFix ex. of the "Automotive" Profile.
  8. You don't want the 60CS, it is not the "high sensitivity" receiver and does not accept a memory card, just for a couple of the differences but these 2 are enough to say definitely go with the 60CSx or 60Cx instead of the 60CS. At present, due to the sale price at REI for an Oregon 450 ($249) through the special Labor Day sale. I would recommend the Oregon 450 over the 60CSx.
  9. One thing that has worked for me in the past when the internal battery was saying low memory battery is to plug it into 12v and leave connected for 24 hours, with the unit turned off. This will recharge the internal battery in some instances, even when installing new AA batteries doesn't recharge the internal battery. Just make sure to always check the AA batteries every few months even when the unit is stored for long periods of time and replace the batteries if they get low. There is a set of instructions on the web on how to replace the internal battery and the type of battery it requires. Information: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/lofiversi...php?t38975.html
  10. Good to know. That also brings on a question; if a 450 screen were available would it work in the 400t also?
  11. If the custom icon was made using the correct parameters, which it probably was, then you must keep the name of the poi file and the name of the custom icon exactly the same. You can rename both to your liking but they must match identically except for the extension. Ex. "Cracker Barrels.csv" and "Cracker Barrels.bmp" or "Cracker Barrel Rest.gpx" and "Cracker Barrel Rest.bmp". Both of the files should be in the same folder. POI loader will automatically load both at the same time and the custom icon will appear for everything that it's name is the same as. The custom icon does not go in the Custom Symbols folder, let POI loader load the files for you. Ex. c:\My Custom POIs\Resturants\Cracker Barrels.csv, Cracker Barrels.bmp and direct POI loader to load your "MY Custom POIs" folder.
  12. A friend just received his new Garmin 76CSx with v 4.2 software and GPS Software 2.30m.
  13. You can use POI loader to Delete all POIs. It also sounds like you may have the same custom POI file on both your units internal memory and also on the memory card, that will make it show up twice also, so if this is the case, you can manually delete the poi.gpi files or use POI loader to delete them, check both memory locations.
  14. Is there any noticeable difference on the map redraw speed on a Garmin Oregon 400t when using a class 4 or 6, 4Gb memory card as compared to a class 2 card, that would justify paying more for the faster class cards?
  15. Cujo31, Even though it is a rather late welcome since you have already posted several times, Welcome. There is not a person on here that has not asked a question that someone has not already asked before on this forum or on another one and in some cases the answer is not known and several heads have to get together to brainstorm. Worst thing of all would be to quit asking questions... no questions = no forum. No body wants to hear about what I ate for lunch, Ha, Ha. So keep the questions coming.
  16. The white backgrounds with the colored borders that fegan gave the link for all show up very well. To enhance their usefullness to another whole level, do like a couple of the screenshots show, and add your profile name in the top and bottom of the colored border for each of your profiles. This makes it very easy for you to always be able to tell at a glance what profile you are in and doesn't take away from the screen's viewing area any significant amount.
  17. For the sake of keeping it short and simple. Use a route on the highway/car and use a track in the woods/walking. For most average users I beleive this would be the best method. There are exceptions when one might want a route instead of a track but not for most situations that involve moving at a relatively slow speed. The track method will get rid of your waypoint problem. You can always still place a waypoint at a pertinent crossing, trail intersection, etc. if you want it.
  18. My vote would be for the Orgeon 450; $299 after rebate. Garmin has a $50 mail-in rebate until June 20 on the Oregon 550s, 450s, and Dakotas in case you didn't know. The rebate is only good if bought from an "authorized Gamin dealer". Amazon and ebay don't qualify.
  19. These are the settings on my 400t. You might try setting the detail to most. Main menu > Setup > Map > Advanced Map Setup, Text Size, Zoom Level > Detail > set to Most. Are you using these settings? Main Menu > Setup > Marine > Marine Chart Mode set to Nautical; Spot Soundings set to On; and Symbol Set set to NOAA edit: By chance your aren't accidentally in a profile that you don't have configured for your marine useage are you. The Oregon wiki gives some excellent "How To's" to create custom profiles with colored borders and the name of the profile in the top and bottom border. This is a geat way to always have a visual telling you which of your many profiles your are in.
  20. In Track Manager, does the same track name show up twice? I saw this problem, when I re-saved a file of tracks to the unit. I had to delete the file from the unit. Power the unit up and let it clear itself. Then save the new version of the file. I think it has something to do with the way the OR processes the files and creates a separate database of the info. My track names were only appearing in Track Manager once and I had not created or transferred any additional tracks to the GPS since the week before when they were all working properly. There were a total of 7 short tracks in Track Manager all working the week before with v3.80 and immediately after updating to v3.81 I could not view any of the 5 tracks on my 400t that I had created in and transferred via Mapsource; the 2 GPSed tracks worked properly. At least the fix was very simple. Per Redwoods Mtn Biker and your post it sounds like the problem might not be due to a change in software but a random problem. edit: We need to see if we can replicate this issue to determine exactly what is causing it as this could be a serious issue if it occured in the wilderness.
  21. I haven't checked in a while but you could get a 4Gb Micro Sd card on-line for less than $10.00 including free shipping. That would give you the maximum size your GPS can handle in map file size.
  22. With Garmin's POI Loader there is an option to delete all POIs or you could just delete the poi.gpi file when the unit is in mass storage mode.
  23. Anyone else see this with v3.81 beta? My tracks created in Mapsource and transferred to my Oregon 400t via Mapsource (located in the Temp.gpx file) would not appear on my GPS's map screen. The track title would show up in the "Track Manager" but when I would try to make any changes to the individual track such as hide or show, view map, set color, delete, etc. the button would just turn blue and not give me another screen with options to make the change. I deleted the Temp.gpx file and resent the tracks via Mapsource and now they work properly, again. The tracks recorded and saved using the GPS were not affected and still worked properly.
  24. Looks like Garmin must have made a change to their web page for the 3.81 beta. The above link takes me to the 3.81 Download page but when I click on "Download" it goes to v3.42 software. If you change the "=4741" to "=4742" it will take you to the v3.81 beta. edit: Disregard above comment. Now original link and "Download" button correctly go to v3.81.
