  1. I have been looking for one with the exact same requirements. After studying about them for a while I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Fuji Finepix XP10. Waterproof - 3 meter; shockproof - 1 meter, dustproof, operates down to 14 deg. F., 5x optical zoom + 6x digital. The only thing I don't like is that is takes a Fuji proprietary battery that has a short charge life so most users say to carry a spare battery, at least they are inexpensive. Factory refurbished can be bought for less than $100 with factory warranty. Maybe someone can point me in a another direction for another contender.
  2. Both are very good GPSs. It is a matter of personal preference. You can read for days in old post/threads concerning this topic. The loyalty between DeLorme users and Garmin users to their GPS is like the feud between the Hatfield and McCoys.
  3. Not sure about Basecamp but if you make a vector custom map what you are wanting can be done. Using GPSMapEdit with 5 levels (0 - 4) and Bits 24, 23, 22, 20, & 19 most of the time the waypoints/POIs put in Level 0 will appear at 0.5 mi. zoom and More (zoom in closer); ones assigned to Levels 0 &1 appear at 0.8 miles and more; Assigned to Levels 0,1,& 2 appear at 2.0 miles and more; Assigned to Levels 0,1, 2, & 3 appear at all Zoom levels on the GPS. Of course all of this is dependent upon what zoom levels the map points are set to 1st appear at in the GPS. With all of this being said it is not perfect and does not work with all GPSMapEdit codes, there are a few that appear at all zoom levels regardless and there are some that won't show up until the most zoomed in settings. But the majority will work as I've mentioned above. You could always increase the number of Levels in GPSMapEdit to get a little more control if you wanted a certain zoom level for a particular POI. For those that don't appear until you are zoomed in a lot you can change that by creating a custom symbol for that code. edit: all of this is with the GPS's detail set to "Most".
  4. I am the original owner of this Garmin Oregon 400t GPS. It has been meticuously cared for, from day 1 has had a Zagg Screen Protector. Never dropped and not a single scratch on case or screen. Works perfectly. Have all of the original items: box, Owner's Manual, Quick Start Guide, USB cable (new - never opened), Carabinner (new - never opened). More than $400 in Extras I'm including in addition to above items: Sandisk 4 Gb micro sd card Garmin City Navigator NT North America 2010 (loaded onto memory card, no DVD included) Garmin g2 Blue Charts for the U.S. (loaded into the GPS's internal memory, no DVD included) Garmin U.S. Inland Lakes v3 for the U.S. (loaded onto the memory card, no DVD included) $350.00 plus actual shipping cost. Payment by Paypal. Will only ship to U.S.
  5. I recently purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector and received these 2 discount codes that are due to expire at midnight, today, 3-29-11. The first 2 lucky people who want to use them can and receive 25% off of the purchase price on up to 3 individual items at Zagg. Hate to see them go to waste if someone can use them. zdzjz6w9 zdzjz6wj
  6. OK.. never mind.. I see now that it's Software ver 4.40 and GPS software ver 4.52.. guess I was looking at the wrong line. Just got mine 3 days ago and even though 4.40 came from the factory there are still some software bugs in ver. 4.40. I have reported these to Garnin and they say they are checking into it. No wirless communication after 1st successful wireless transfer. When changing waypt. symbol both old symbol and new symbol are both displayed on top of each other for a while; old symbol will go away instantly if you turn unit off and back on. If you delete a waypoint it's symbol will still appear on map page screen, even though it is no longer in the waypt. manager's list, turn unit off and back on and is no longer on map page screen.
  7. The touch screens are great for menu navigation and data entry. The only drawback to them is the inherent technology of touch screens that makes them not as easy to view in 1 circumstance. That is when your outside on a bright sunny day, but the sun is not shining on your GPS screen, in this situation the backlight as little effect and the screen can be a little hard to see on some pages. Individual opinoins concerning this are swayed more by what they were accustom to prior to getting a touch screen. I've never had any input or sensitivity problems on my Oregon 400t Now having said all of this, my opinoin, I wouldn't go back to a buttons GPS at all. It's about like trying to text on an old cell phone without a keyboard compared to a smart phone with a keyboard. Cabelas has a great deal on the Garmin Oregon 450 for $249.99 right now.
  8. Why not just keep all of this simple. You know 1 corner and you say it is 10 acres and is a square, therefore each side is 660 ft. You can do the rest of what you want in Mapsource by drawing a track. In Mapsource when you draw a track line it shows the bearing at which your drawing the line and displays in feet how far you have drawn until you reach a length of 0.1 miles and then shows tenths of a mile; since 660 ft. is longer than 0.1 miles create a point before you reach 528 ft. ( 0.1 mile) in the length of your leg and then complete the 660 from the previous point so you can tell exactly when you've drawn 660 ft. leg. Continue until you comlete your square. 1. Create a waypoint for your known corner 2. Create track as mentioned above. 3. Save file in Mapsource. 4. Transfer track to GPS 5. Set GPS to display track on screen 6. Now you can walk the property and see the track (property line) displayed on screen without navigating the track. Much simpler than creating a map or converting file types for a 1 time use. To verify the accuracy of what I'm suggesting I tried it in Mapsource and it came out exact and took less than 2 minutes to complete the track and transfer to GPS. I created a pt. at 500 ft. and then the next pt. 160 more ft. for all 4 sides. edit; zoom in, in Mapsource to the 120 ft. (or 80 ft. if monitor screen is large enough) zoom level to show entire track on screen and for best accuracy.
  9. +1 to ecanderson's comment. I have used my Oregon 400t mounted on the handlebar of my ATV out in 20-25 deg. F. for 8 hours of continuous use. Had no problems with using the touchscreen. It was the first time I had used the NiZn batteries (freashly charged) out in the cold and was amazed at how they lasted all day in that temperature, being exposed. Unit was never turned off. I personally like the NiZn batteries (2,500 mWh) and get considerably better life out of them than my Rayovac Hybrid (2,100 mAh).
  10. You won't regret going with the Oregon 450. Just be sure to buy it from an "authorized" Garmin dealer. If you did ever have problems with it, Garmin is excellent in regards to their Customer Service and warranty repairs as long as you bought it from an authorized dealer. Ebay does not qualify here (new Garmin products purchased on ebay are not covered under Garmin's warranty), unless it is an ebay store front for a brick and mortar business that is a Garmin dealer.
  11. Installed without any problems. I now get WAAS to occassionally lock on inside my house even though it shows 25' accuracy. Does anyone see what has been changed pertaining to "Improved the usability of the main menu setup page"? Anxious to field test. Edit #1: Problem: I was in my Marine Profile when I updated the software. Now my U.S. Inland Lakes Map, Blue Charts, and my custom vector river maps will not work. The maps are still there because I can Enable/Disable them but when enabled there is no detail to the map at all, just the outline of the map tiles and the data only for the most zoomed out levels. It appears that, that 1 Profile has gotten corrupted during the software installation because the above mentioned maps plus my other maps including my other custom vector maps and my Garmin Custom Maps do work properly in my other Profiles. So far it looks like just the active Profile at the time of the softare installation was afftected. Edit #2: Deleted the corrupted Marine Profile and recreated it and above mentioned maps all appear correctly now.
  12. I had seen the same thing on some of the software updates in the past for the Oregon 400t; but it was usually limited to just the profile I was in at the time of the update. The ones not active were not changed.
  13. Cabelas has the Garmin Oregon 450 on sale for $249.99, if your interested in spending a little more. It is true paperless for geocaching, where the 60CSx is not, if that's your primary use. Cabelas has it on backorder for the time being, but you can still lock in the price. The 450 offers a lot of things that the 60CSx does not, you can compare them side by side on Garmin's website. To me a couple of the most advantagous features the Oregon 450 has over the 60CSx are: the touch screen, being able to add an additional map to the unit without having to reload every map again, being able to put Garmin custom maps on the unit (which can include satellite imagery).
  14. There have been lots of reports of individuals using 8Gb and a few using 16Gb memory cards without any issues. Most of the time these individuals are loading large areas of Birdseye imagery. If you plan to use the Birdseye imagery subscription you probably would want at least an 8Gb memory card, since they can be bought online for around $15; ebay has a Sandisk 8Gb Class 4 for $12.9? with free shipping.
  15. Garmin has been known to put software versions on new units before they ever become available by Webupdater. In one case, I don't think a software version that was sent out on some new units ever became available using Webupdater because and even newer software version was made available by Webupdater.
  16. I'm not familiar with Sled GPS to know if you loaded a map with points or waypoints but in either case, on the Oregon 400t you change it as below and I believe the 450 is the same. Change the zoom level on your GPS that they appear at. Main Menu > Setup > Map > Advanced Map Setup Text Size, Zoom Level > Zoom Levels Points, Streets, etc. and change the "Map Points" and/or the "User Waypoints" to whatever zoom level you want them to start appearing at. This is an all or none situation for all waypoints or all map points, you can't just select the lodging, food, and hiking points. If this does not do it then you can't change them.
  17. The Garmin Nuvi 500 or 550. Are the same except one includes Canada and the other has topo maps. Both are waterproof, have a 3 1/2" touchscreen, can add additional maps, and last fairly long on battery power compared to some of the other Nuvi models, but still no where near as long as the handheld models, but you can always keep it pluged in to 12v on the ATV. Take a look at the specs. on Garmin's website: Garmin.com.
  18. Now would be a good time to back up everything on the GPS to your PC, plus saving it all to a DVD incase PC has a melt down one day. This is the first thing I always suggest to my friends to do with the purchase of a new GPS. Glad it all worked out well for you at a minimal cost.
  19. City Navigator NT, North America v8.00 was the last CN version that came with 2 unlock codes. You do have to contact Garmin for the second unlock code but they should still honor it, if you are the original owner and since it was part of the package when you bought it. I am still using it on both a 60CSx from 3 years ago and used the 2nd unlock code on my Oregon 400t 1 1/2 years ago. edit: If you registered your 60CSx and your CN NT v8 with Garmin at the time you purchased them, you shouldn't have any problems getting the 2nd unlock code.
  20. All above mentioned options are good options but the newer model Garmin GPSs such as the Oregons allow you to rename the file named "gmapsupp.img" loaded to your GPS. Do this with the GPS in mass storage mode via you PC. Ex. load the MS topo... rename the "gmapsupp.img" file to "MS Topo.img"... then load the LA topo... again, rename the "gmapsupp.img" file to "LA Topo.img". This gives you the advantage of not having to reload all your maps when just 1 of many maps that you put on your GPS over time is updated. The exisiting "gmapsupp.img" file on your GPS is always overwritten with the newly loaded "gmapsupp.img" file. If you haven't already it is a good idea to back up eveything (all files) that came on your GPS from the factory to your PC or a DVD for safe keeping.
  21. 1. Are you wanting to just put tracks created in GE into your GPS? or 2. Are you wanting to take the tracks created in GE and make a custom vector map (not a "Garmin Custom Map" - won't work on the 60CSx) out of the tracks? The first is easy so I'll answer it for you, the second is rather involved. 1. Create your tracks in GE 2. Save the GE file as a .kml file. 3. Use GPSBabel (free download) to convert your .kml file to a .gpx file. 4. Open your new .gpx file in Mapsource (edit if desired) and transfer tracks to your GPS.
  22. Thanks, for the notice of the sale. Just ordered some to try. Maybe it won't take to long to get them.
  23. I just tested this on my OR300 with 17 different mapsets in 17 renamed .img files on the micro memory card. All 17 are listed in individual enable/disable boxes, as is the basemap on the OR300's internal memory. Maybe it's been changed with some of the later updates. I'm curious to see if you keep adding them at what number does it quit putting the map file name in the list where you can Enable / Disable the maps. When I saw a limit of 10 maps, size and alphabetical order did not matter; it was whatever map was installed last. edit: I just tried putting 12 renamed map .img files on my memory card and all displayed properly, apparently the 10 file limit was changed with a software update at some point.
  24. Here is something I have run in to, but haven't seen any discussion on it. On my Oregon 400t the maximum number of map files (individually renamed map files) that can be viewed to Enable or Disable is 10 different map .img files. But, you can have 10 on the memory card plus 10 on the GPS's internal memory (if sufficient memory is available) for a total of 20 map files. You can load more than the 10 to either location as menitoned above but after you reach 10 only the first 10 are displayed on the GPS's page where you can Enable or Disable them.
