  1. I like locationless caches, even though I have only 'found' two. Actually, I have found others, but did not have my GPS and camera with me at the time. But still, it made me think about caching and made me want to do it right then. But each time, I still smiled and thought about caching. Don't stop them. If someone doesn't want to do them, they don't have to. There are muggles who don't like geocaching...PERIOD and would stop us from doing it if they could by getting rid of all of them. Would you want them to do that to you? Leave them be. targetdrone
  2. I have the Garmin bike mount for my Legend. I had to put folded up paper under the battery contacts to keep the unit from shutting off when I hit a bump. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  3. The Vista has more memory, which is only useful if you purchase the Mapsource disks at about 100 bucks. If you aren't going to get them, get the Venture. I love my Legend. Don't forget to update the firmware if you get one. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  4. I always take my Axim with me, but just for the cache pages and sorting info. I use gpxView for that. It even will export pushpin files for MS Pocket Streets. I use a Garmin Legend for hunting the cache. It's much more durable and cheaper, not to mention very accurate. Even with a CF GPS card, I wouldn't use it for hunting the cache. I use Pocket Streets for navigating when needed. I appreciate your efforts, but I won't be purchasing the program. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  5. Roy, go to the main menu of your Legend. Click on System > Units > Map Datum. Change it to WGS 84. That should do what you want. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  6. Absolutely use NiMh batteries and carry spares. I use a black 35mm film canister with the gray lid and put 2 AA's in it. + up for charged, - up for dead. I once had some batteries in my pocket(before using the above system) and somehow my keys completed a circuit. I had a hotpocket that you couldn't eat. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  7. Twist the click-stick if it stops reading up-down movements. Congrats to you new owners of the Legend GPSr. Don't forget to go the the Garmin website and download the latest firmware upgrades. It opens up features and upgrades the memory available for waypoints. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  8. rx, if you are using the laptop, you can use almost any map software you wish. (I have used many programs, and prefer MS Streets & Trips for the laptop.) Just set the output mode on the Legend to 'NMEA'. (Leave it in 'Garmin' output if you are using Garmin software.) If you get the Mapsource software, you can load maps into the Legend. Metroguide uses up more memory than topo or Road & Rec. Make sure you turn off autorouting if you get the Metroguide. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  9. I still don't know if I will be going to the OC picnic. I will probably go if I carpool with someone. I have already put alot of hard miles on my Prelude. If only it didn't think it was a Jeep... "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  10. I came across this utility that converts the maps for PS2003 so they can be used by PS2001 for your PocketPC. There is also a link for MS PS2001 and the maps on the page. Enjoy. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  11. Imagine Nancy's embarrassment when she got to the coordinates and found the cache was wearing the exact same outfit. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  12. You can vist www.garmin.com and see what the maps look like, however, your Venture can not load them. The Legend and Vista can, and it is worth the few extra dollars for that feature. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  13. Then (Sept 02) 1375 Now 1816 "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  14. Thanks, Mrcpu. Make sure you use the black ones with the gray lids. The clear ones aren't quite tall enough for AA's, but are better for AAA's. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  15. I bought a set back at Thanksgiving, and so far I am having good results. I do admit that I often put 4 AA's in a holder and charge them with a unit for R/C stuff that has a mode for nimh batteries. I use the charger that came with it other times (when I just want to charge 2 batteries) and that also seems to work. NOTE: Overcharging batteries is a very bad thing. I don't think the charger that comes with the batteries has any kind of shut off. Make sure to remove the batteries after the appropriate time. To keep track of batteries in my backpack, I put them in pairs into film canisters. + up for charged batteries and - up when they are in need of a recharge. Kind of like the clean/dirty magnets for dishwashers. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  16. What? You can't read the numbers. Es numeros es mismo Englés y Español y Francais. Gosh, I hope I butchered that badly enough. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  17. Can you load the version you replaced? You did save it, didn't you? "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  18. If you want my permission, the answer is NO. For now, I will let Geocaching.com have the exclusive dibs on my caches. If someone want to see them, they can do it here...... for free. Besides, you didn't say what kind of 'project' it is. If you have ask for permission, you must have some sort of commercial goal. If it were just to promote geocaching, probably nobody would have minded. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  19. No, I didn't find it. I entered the wrong coords....again. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  20. And Norton AFB no longer exists. It is now San Bernardin Int'l and is at N34 05.723 W117 14.106 Of course I new exactly what N34 was and started laughing. When they come up with the rest of the coords, people ought to show up there. A few years ago, Kawasaki had an ad campaign that had a fictional ride set on a future date at a southern California popular motorcycle destination. The were amazed when LOTS of riders showed up at the place/date shown in the ad. Of course, then they started planning actual events in the same manner. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
  21. I had a similar problem. There was a character that it couldn't read. You may need to update to the latest version of EasyGPS. Click here to get to the dowload page of the latest release. You can also use EasyMPS to convert the GPX file to an MPS file if you have a Garmin and the Mapsource software. "It's free advice and worth every cent."

  23. quote:Originally posted by Natureboy1376:Ok 2 things first, will the visita or ledgend ever be able to download and hold cache pages? Can it be done now? Second I've been looking for a link to a webpage I saw a while back, i thought it was clayjars but thatsa not working...It use to listed questions on how to rate your cache for difficulty..Any of you geoexperts know where i can find that? Thanks Again See you in the woods! Natureboy1376 The Legend and Vista will NOT hold web pages. You will need a PDA for that. Garmin now makes a PDA with GPS and software built in. Check Markwell's FAQ to see if that is what you were looking for. "It's free advice and worth every cent."

  25. I used the 2.43 Beta for quite a while and never had any problems. I downloaded the new one last night, but haven't updated my Legend yet. "It's free advice and worth every cent."
