  1. Hmmm, your talking to a guy that doesn't know a gigabyte from an overbite. How would I create a folder on the card. And is an uncompressed GPX file one that is unzipped? Thanks in advance for your help. Simply, plug the USB lead into your GPS and then into the PC/MAC, open explorer or finder (MAC) then select the memory card simply click on it to select , and make a new folder called GPX on the memory card and put the GPX files both of them uncompressed/ un zipped into that folder by dragging and dropping them into the GPX folder you just created . If that does not make sense, I am sure someone will jump in and help more. You are the bomb. Got it and I can't thank you enough. I think I'm ready to engineer some software.

  3. Great info. Thanks for your reply. I'll pick up a micoSD card tomorrow and give it a try. I had the same problem once, did you put the GPX file into the GPX folder on the SDCARD? Ok, I put a couple of GPX files on a new micoSD card and the eTrex doesn't see any caches. I shut it down and reinstalled it and still no caches. Whatup.

  8. Very easy to fix in the field if you keep your PQ’s on the external memory. Shutdown GPS, remove external memory, startup GPS, shutdown GPS, replace external memory and startup GPS. By external memory do you mean putting the GPX file on a memory card as a backup or use it for all PQ'S?
  9. I too have fired up my eTrex 20 out in the field only to discover there are no caches on it. It seems when I drag and drop the GPX files into the Garmin file it doesn't always work. Lately I've been using EasyGPS and sending the files to the unit and haven't had a problem since. I don't use Birdseye so I don't know if this helps or not. I do use City Navigator though and seems to work fine with it.
  10. Turn your backlight off. Do you have a GC? We tried that, but then we couldn't see squat. Any suggestions? Makes sure you have the proper type of batteries selected. This has no affect on the batteries themselves. It adjusts how the bettery meter functions. It can cause the meter to show the batter is low when it really isn't or the other way around. Set the backlight timer to something very short. How long do you spend CONTINUOUSLY looking at the screen? Set the timer for a little longer than that. This will have the effect of turning the backlight off when you look away. The backlight timer resets every time a button is pressed and the backlight automatically turns back on whenever you press any button. Set the brightness based on condition. Brightness can easily be adjusted by quickly pressing the power button and adjusting it from the menu that appears. Set the Suspend Timer or manually suspend your GPSr. Quickly pressing the power button will bring up the menu to allow you to manually suspend. The GPSr will continue to track but the screen will be turned off. I use this when I know I am not going to be looking at the GPSr for a while but I want to continue tracking. Like when I know I have a mile or two of trail walking before reaching the next cache. Quickly pressing the power button will wake the GPSr up from suspend mode. Set the Power off timer. We've all forgotten to turn our GPSr off from time to time. Just make sure you set this to something reasonable. The timer starts from the last key press of joystick movement so don't be afraid of setting this something small like 1 hour or even less. If you are like most people you fondle with your GPSr more than you realize. All good advice. Thanks.
  11. Ok, you made a believer out of me. Thanks for the response.
  12. How long do they last on a full charge?
  13. No way would I try to promote a product on these forums but I just thought some cacher out there would be interested. I purchased a couple of Energizer Lithium double A's in Alaska on May 28 and I'm just now replacing them after 230 caches and 7 days short of 3 months. I use an eTrex 20 and seldom get more than a month out of regular batteries. A little pricey but what the heck.
  14. If it wasn't for spam mail I would have never increased my size, got rich by helping that Nigerian prince, met many sexy singles, or found great deals across the net! dadgum, that was so funny I blew out some of my peanut butter sandwich onto the screen. Thanks alot.
  15. It will do all of the above, plus transfer the logs to the eTrex also. But why do them one at a time when you can generate pocket queries and send several thousand caches with all of the above information. I use the eTrex 20 and love it.
  16. I have the E-trex 20 with City Navigator and it does everything that you're asking except I use an Android with it. With pocket queries I hardly use the Android anymore.
  17. Starter unit? I've owned high end units and the 20 is the best yet. Great choice and you're missing nothing.
  18. I had problems with mine a while back so I uninstalled the geocaching app and then re installed it. It's been working fine since. Works fine for general navigation also.
  19. Our first one had coords that took us into the woods to a tree with a rifle scope attached to it. Well you put your eye up to the scope and the crosshairs were fixed on a point about a hundred yards away. We walked to that point and there was a nicely hidden ammo can. We were hooked after this one.
  20. If you get anywhere near Yosemite National Park then come visit Sonora. We have hundreds of caches in the area.
  21. Oh yea. We've been caching on our ElectraGlide for years now. You're right by saying it's a great combination. Y'all be safe out there.
  22. I'll see your Magellan and raise you a Garmin.
