  1. I originally signed up with a "automatic pay as you go, month by month" setup, but decided to pay for a full year. I just got email noticed, saying it's still drafting the monthly payment too. I can't seem to find where the payment options are so I can cancel my monthly payments, since I already paid for a year's membership. Help?!
  2. buy more crap? gah! that sucks, my legend had the city maps already on it when I got it. lol. ty for the help.
  3. I'm probably going to feel like a heel for asking this, but now that I got this GPSmap 60CS, I'm not too happy with it. My eTrex legend old black and white screen at least has street by street viewing. This 60CS doesn't seem to have anything for mapping. A few basic main roads, but nothing in details. So what's the deal? I've checked the options and haven't seen anything to turn on street view. Do I need to buy an additional set of maps or something? Sorry for the noob questions, any help is appreciated. -Jason
  4. When you set the waypoint in your GPS, just name it something like.. Cache number: GC#### Cache size: M, S, R (micro, small, regular, etc..) Difficulty: 1/1 2/1 etc.. SO an easy to find micro in a mall parking lot may look like: GC####-M-1/1 (coords)
  5. I bought a Garmin eTrex Legend for my first GPS and it did WAY more than I needed for geocaching. Any of the entry level hand helds will work great for you if all you want it for it is caching. If you want to do some fancy routing, mapping and stuff like that, you're looking at spending more money. If you watch the GPS Garage Sale, you should be able to find a Garmin eTrex , eTrex Legend, or similar entry level GPSr for $100 or less.
  6. I'll play along. '03 TJ, minor lift, 31" tires, winch, misc armor, etc...
  7. I'm hoping so. I want to eventually have a hand held that I can set up for trip routing and still use for caching.
  8. The only items you mentioned I don't EDC (every day carry) is the magnet and mirror. I have tons of misc stuff in the Jeep, including 2 changes of clothes, a couple flashlights and I always have my Leatherman on my hip. I just picked up a Garmin MAP60CS and will be selling off my Legend. I think I prefer the color map and from what i gathered it's a better receiving unit.
  9. I've put my 10th coating of water proof spray on my old work boots today. Well first coat today, 10th over a period of 4 years. lol) I'm going to look into some nice gortex hiking boots one of these days. I've already upgraded from a Garmin Legend to a Garmin Map60CS (waiting for it to arrive), and I've only had it a day. LOL So far, I really think puzzle caches set up like crosswords are my favorite, and I almost loathe micros. There's so many micros near me, I have no choice but accept them in my "to hunt" list.
  10. Speaking of Jeeps, I just went out for the first time with my GPS and snapped this pic. hehe. Pouring rain and hiking in the wet PA wilderness with sporadic GPS coverage, I still found the cache.
  11. Wheew, I'm not losing my mind. lol I was fidgeting with it over and over and thought I was missing something. Thanks a ton to the crew for making that a future feature. That will be AWESOME when it's released.
  12. Ok, I understand the search feature. U put in your zipcode (or the zipcode where you want to cache) and go through the caches and see what you want to look for, no problem. What I'm having trouble with is hiding the caches I've already found when in this mode: LINK HERE I can't seem to hide the ones I've already found. I can hide them when I am in the normal search mode, but if I click the "Search for caches with Google Maps" it puts in all the caches, no matter if I found them or not. Anyone know how to hide the found ones on the google map search? *feels like such a noob, lol*
  13. The new JK IS the new Cherokee. It just has a nice removable top.
  14. That sucks man. I mowed over a nest of ground wasps (aka mud wasps) once. Talk about a funny sight. My wife said she heard the mower stop, followed by me screaming like a school girl and running across the yard swatting at nothing and doing some weird hop-stepping all over the yard. I laugh now, but I know the panic you felt and the desprate attempt to get to safety. Glad you're ok. BTW- I keep hornet spray in my cache bag, but never thought of keeping benadryl. *adding it now*
  15. I don't know if it's my cable or my lack of drivers, but my PDA won't interface with my laptop. I'm going to have to buy a cable somewhere other than the dollar store and try it. lol
  16. I got my GPSr and Palm Zire today. I haven't' a clue what I'm doing, but so far I've gotten up to 4mph running back and forth in the yard... LOL I'm thinking I'll be getting rid of this palm zire and just use the notepad for the hints and tips of a cache. I use the paper for doodle paper anyhow, so I may as well print one side and doodle the other.
  17. I've got 21 finds without a GPS. There are some that you will NEED a GPS for, but it's certainly not a requirement for hunting. I click the cache I want to seek, click to view print mode, zoom in the map and decrypt the hint and print it. It's really simple. Maybe once I get the local ones found I'll have to use a GPS (which I just bought) but most of the caches I've found I have found before a GPS could get the coordinates on screen.
  18. Sure, if you plan a vacation up this way and want to camp, I know a LOT of really nice area up here in the ANF (allegheny national forest), some nice camper spots, and a lot of really nice tent spots. Come on up and make a weekend of it. Being new, I still have a LOT of caches to hunt in this area myself. but don't' wait too long, I dont know if I can curb my addiction and slow down.
  19. Well, I told my self a while ago that if I dabble in geocaching and hit 20 finds with no GPS and only using this site + google maps, it's time to get some real gear. Well, I reached that mile marker (if 20 is really a marker compared to most of you veteran hunters) and decided it was a hobby I would continue to enjoy. So, my first investment was a one month membership here to see what I'm missing out on vs being a member and non member. I'll go with a 1 year subscription when my month is up. Definitely worth the added features and "member only" caches. I got into the classifieds and received a great deal on a Garmin Legend and a Palm Zire m150, $100 for both. I can't wait till they arrive and I can learn to use them. I imagine for a while I'll be using paper still, but will play with the PDA after I learn to use the GPSr. I'm also going to get a data cable if I can't find the one for my old RAZR. For software I'll get GSAK and Cachemate, so I can try and make things work a little bit smoother. Anything else I should look into? I'm really looking forward to learning more about backpacking and day hiking too, so I can leave at dawn and hike into some remote locations and back. I've rediscovered my youth in camping and backpacking thanks to GeoCaching. I'm hoping to turn my caching adventures into some routing exercise for myself and my family. We found a fun activity we can all enjoy. Sorry to waste your time, I just had to share my enthusiasm with you all. Anyhow, if you're ever in the Warren, PA area and see this Jeep parked near a cache spot, feel free to identify yourself and say hi. I'd love to meet some friendly faces.
  20. Where in NY are you, I love puzzles and if it's a reasonable drive from 16365, I'm in! hehe
  21. Toss in Jeeping and recreational travel, and you got my planned geocaching adventures. A few times a year I go for daily trail rides with my local Jeep Club, then plan to stay an extra day (or go a day early) to geocache the area.
  22. I ended up with a Garmin eTrex Legend and a Palm Zire m150 all for $100+sh I'll get Cachemate + GSAK when I get to know the paperless caching a bit better, and learn how to use the GPS unit. Thanks everyone for your posts, PMs, and great write ups and recommendations on GPSr and Palm units.
  23. I just sent payment for a Garmin eTrex Legend and a Palm Zire M150 and it should hopefully arrive in time for this weekend's adventures. I'm sure you guys(and gals) have some tips and tricks for a new cacher to make my electronic caching a bit less traumatic. I looked around a bit, and it seems my best bet would be to get GSAK, but what else do I need to help me interface from my laptop to my PDA and GPS? Thanks in advance, Jason
  24. Not a bad idea, IMHO. Digital Log: Cache Name, Date, brief description of the experience, with a photo if you can. I'd use a program that you can add pics right in with the text, or maybe an online blog. In fact, since I only have 10 finds, I may backtrack and start one too. Sounds like a fun way to keep track of my experiences. Thanks for the idea
