  1. I don't know what it means, but "replaced back plastics" was what they did to mine. I guess they replaced the inner workings. I really haven't taken a good look at it. As for saving stuff, they ask that you send it in without the batteries and take out the sd card. So when you get it back, everything is still there when you put your SD card back in. 2. I've got bad news and good news for you. The bad news is that after you try all the tricks (shutting off power, holding down various buttons) it may still not work. The even badder news is the only way to fix it is to send it back to DeLorme. The good news is, when you sent it they are pretty fast and they do it for free. I have a PN-40 and just recently had to send mine back for the exact same thing that your is doing.. The notation on the packing list said that they had "replaced back plastics". Whatever they did, it works again. Cacheola Crew Mom
  3. If anyone has seen the actual pamphlet (unavailable in our council store), what ARE the 4 steps as listed in the merit badge book for requirement # 6. Are they what was posted previously? IE: Finding your First Geocache Step 1 – Research Step 2 – Safety Tips Step 3 – The Hunt Step 4 – The Actual Find Thanks, Cacheola Crew Mom
  4. I have good things and bad things to say about the PN-40. I got mine last year and I really like the interface for paperless geocaching. Very easy to load caches into the unit and it is a breeze to upload your field notes. Having the entire description and logs right in the unit has saved much hassle, paper and ink. The color screen is very nice and bright. Now the bad. From the moment I got my PN-40, I've had trouble with it occasionally freezing up. When this happens, none of the buttons will work and the only way to reset it was to open up the back, pull the batteries out, and reset. Because of my love of the other features, I put up with this over the past year. However, just this weekend, the thing won't even start at all. Doesn't matter what I do with the batteries, or if I attach it to the computer to power it, it remains a brick. I looked over at the DeLorme Forums and this seems to be a common problem. One other minor annoyance is that the place to hang the lanyard is on the top of the unit, not the bottom, so when you have it around your neck, and you pull it towards you to look at it, it will be upside down. I hear that they are fixing that in the next incarnation to have some kind of button that will flip the screen image, so that it will appear right-side up. I don't know a whole lot about the other two, but that's my love/hate relationship with PN-40. So bad is it that I am actually thinking of getting another one, even though it only lasted a year! (But I also have gone through 4 XBOX 360's...) Good luck Cacheola Crew Mom
  5. Our "mission completed" was actually our son's travel bug, GEO-JAGUAR, which was sent out for a Geography Fair project. Geo-Jaguar was out for about a year and a half and travelled 32,485 miles, visiting many different countries along the way. While out in the field, finders took good care of it and also sent pictures, brochures etc., all of which my son placed into a binder to display with a map of its travels. Geo-Jaguar at the launch The project not only won a first place ribbon, but also won the Presidents Award trophy overall. There are pictures on the cache page, and the logs are very interesting. Check them out, At the Geography Fair
  6. This travel bug was a piece of concrete from the World Trade Centers. We got to take it to the Flight 93 memorial on September 11, 2004. and the geocache there Unfortunately, it went missing in 2005
  7. I subscribed to the GPS Garage Sale forum for a while and now I'd like to unsubscribe. When I hit "options" the only tab there is for "subscribe". How do I unsubscribe? I tried hitting the subscribe button thinking that maybe the option was within there, but it just says I'm already subscribed. TIA, Cacheola Crew
  8. This is a Tom Tom 510 that I just bought refurbished from Buy.com. It is like new and comes with the one year warranty. I used it once to "test it out" in comparison with a couple of other GPS's. It's hard to compare them in stores and so I had the bright idea to buy a few, and put them through their paces. I took them all on a trip of about 10 miles to see which one I liked the best. I figured I would be able to return the one I didn't choose. Well, I neglected to read the store's return policy which requires a 15% "restocking fee". Yikes, not such a bright idea now. I'd rather split the 15% with someone else than send it back. This GPS has been used just the one time for my test and it is in perfect working condition. It is in the original box and has all the original items inside. I simply chose a different GPS. But it's a great GPS unit...it just comes down to personal preference. Some things I really liked about the TOM TOM in my comparisons were that the direction screen is very large and clear, with the street name and directional arrow clearly displayed. The voices were really natural and easy to understand and the way it gave directions was more conversational that some other GPS's. It has millions of POI's, plus it has the ability to download more. It has the ability to store favorites by Longitude and Latitude, so you can see caches along your route. So, if a Tom Tom 510 is the GPS you would like to own, I have it! It comes shipped in the original box and includes a bunch of stuff: - SD card. Containing map data. - Carry case. To store your TomTom GO when it's not in your vehicle. - Home dock. For easy connection of your GO to your PC or Mac and charging your GO in the convenience of your home or hotel. Comes with dock, USB cable, and home charger. - Car charger. 12-24V cigarette lighter adapter that can also be used in trucks so you can charge your GO even as you drive. - Windshield dock. - External microphone. To optimize the quality of your voice when you use your GO for hands-free calling. - Home charger. For charging your GO at home before your journey. - Documentation pack. Contains quick start guide, accessory leaflet, and CD. - Product code card. - one year warranty $190.00 free shipping. Here's the unit, showing the navigation screen and the "browse map" screen. I never took the shrink wrap off the screen Here's what comes with it. I only took out the adapters and the mount. The rest still in original packaging The original box. Here's the skinny on the unit: TomTom GO 510 - Functionalities Easy to use: Clear & accurate spoken and visual instructions: Easy to follow, calm instructions given with plenty of notice mean that you can focus on your driving. 9. No need for the photos anymore, so I took them down. Cacheola Crew Mom SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Since there is an update version that logically dictates that there was a previous NT version. You can't update the regular version with the NT update disk. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But either way, as long as he makes sure it is the 2008 version, he'll have the latest. Jo
  11. I think you are correct that this is the first NT version. Just make sure that it is advertised as GARMIN MapSource City Navigator North America 2008 DVD (or 2008 NT) and you should get the newest version. Here's an example: http://www.gpsnow.com/garmin_city_navigato...rth_america.htm
  12. I'm helping Parrothead put his photos on the thread. Here they are: Cacheola Crew Mom here are the pics sorry did not put up right away. all right so how do i put then here ?? if you want to see the stuff email and i will sent then to you! email parrothead10@comcast.net
  13. Believe it or not, I decided to keep a cheapie, NEXTAR C3. I bought it last month and there were some things I did not like about it and that is why I decided to try out some others. What I don't like about the NEXTAR C3 is that you cannot enter new favorites as longitude and latitude and so I cannot put geocache coords into it. Also, it doesn't zoom out any further than 10 miles which makes it hard to see where you are in relation to other cities or towns. However, after trying out both this NUVI 200 and a TomTom 510, I've found that maybe those two are just too much GPS for my needs. They do a lot, but that makes them both a little more complicated, and I'm just a simple girl! But I'm sure it is the right GPS for someone, like I mentioned, it's just a matter of personal preference. Someone posted a youtube video about the Nuvi 250 which is just the NUVI 200 with some additional maps, so you could take a look at how it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUKyqquHPwk
  14. I see Circuit City has it on sale this week for $249.00, so I modified the price to $240.00
  15. I've got a brand new Garmin Nuvi 200 in the box. Used it once to "test it out" in comparison with a couple of other GPS's. This GPS has been used just the one time for my test and it is in perfect working condition. It is in the original box and has all the original items inside. I simply chose a different GPS. But it's a great GPS unit...it just comes down to personal preference. Some things I really liked about the NUVI in my comparisons were that it is very slim which makes it convenient to take out of the car and carry it in your pocket. It's POI's are complete with address and phone number, plus it has the ability to download more. The voice on it is loud and clear, and the directions it gives are spot on! It has the ability to store favorites by Longitude and Latitude, so you can see caches along your route. So, if a Garmin Nuvi 200 is the GPS you would like to own, I have it! It comes shipped in the original box and includes Vehicle suction cup mount, 12-24 volt adapter cable and Get started guide $240.00 free shipping. 16. Hey that's nifty. Could you show a screen shot more zoomed in (of maybe two towns)? One "via point: would be enough for me. Do you know if the lower end Nuvi's offer that? (Nuvi 200) CCM
  17. Yes, a Nuvi allows you to input coordinates. You select "Where to" and one of the options is coordinates. It will have automatically filled in your present coordinates, but you just use the back arrow to erase and press the numbers. Yes, it's even set up like a KEYPAD on the screen. Very nice! Thanks Jenischemeni. Anyone with the TomTom know if the POI's for the Tom Tom show the address and phone number of the location? I've been reading many reviews but there is conflicting info out there. I'm thinking maybe that is because some of the reviews are old and maybe this was an update? Cacheola Crew Mom
  18. Okay, this may sound like a no-brainer for an automotive GPS, but believe it or not, I bought this Nextar unit and it only zooms out to 10 miles. Makes it very difficult to get a true overview of your trip...you can't even see the next city over. (I only paid $129 for it, so I guess you get what you pay for!) Do the Nuvi's zoom out further? I found a picture of the TomTom which shows the track going across the entire U.S. so I know they do, but I haven't seen a screen shot of the Nuvi yet. Also between the TomTom and the Nuvi, do either of them have a "stopover" feature in which you can add destinations in between your final destination? Cacheola Crew Mom
  19. Do any of the car nav systems let you manually enter waypoints using coordinates? Cacheola Crew Mom
  20. I'm looking to augment my old Map 330 with something that can do autorouting and POI functions, but small enough to use on the trail and in the kayak. I think I have narrowed my choices down to these four. If you own one of these units, could you tell me what you have found about it since you got it home that you love and hate? Friends let me look at their 60CSX and Magellan Explorist XL, so I know that both of those can support auto-routing (turn by turn directions) with the proper software. Does anyone know if Explorist 500 can? Do all of these offer the POI feature as well (where you can ask for the nearest ATM, Gas station etc and it will give you lists) I'm beginning to think it doesn't matter which GPS I get, but that it is the software that matters. Any opinions on the software necessary to get the functionalities I want? Cacheola Crew Mom
