  1. Could somebody tell me how realistic it is to use an iphone for geocaching instead of a gpsr???
  2. I would definitely go with Nuvi. A friend of mine has a tomtom. We were leaving on a 1.5 hr trip. I set my Nuvi up and it always tells me ETA within 5 mins. His gave a ridiculous longer eta and compensated as we travelled. When we I arrived, and my nuvi (as usual) was spot on with original eta, I told him he could keep his tomtom. The nuvi is amazing.
  3. it's really quite easy. just open it up. it will instruct when to mark your beginning. I would make this in one corner, but it really doesnt matter. Just somewhere on the outside perimeter. Once you click the mark button you take off walking the perimeter, all the way back to the beggining. Then it will calculate it for you. I'm sure you could use an atv or truck to drive it as well. Hope this helps.
  4. Welcome to the addictive sport of geocaching. I'm no expert, but I've been doing it for about a year and a half. The GPSr (GPSreciever) you got is a good starter gpsr. That's the exact GPSr I started out with. Found my first 50-100 caches with it. What Briansnat said is true, but you can still find caches. Heavy tree cover is a problem. Read up on the topics on this site and you'll probably find all the info you need to include links to some good resourses. Also if you can find someone local to help you that would be cool. I'm in eastern NC and there about 2 geocaching groups within 50 miles of me. I'm a member of one. Email me if you want further help. Chris
  5. Hands down....NUVI. My wife was anti GPS. She was making a trip with her mother to a remote location in VA to a Bed and Breakfast. We were in Circuit City and picked up a nuvi on displayed. I asked her what the name of the B and B was. She said, "it's not in there" scoffingly(sp). I plugged in name and within seconds it created a route from our location to B and B. Needless to say we had a nuvi after that. I love my nuvi. We go to strange cities and just drive all around the city like we own, or have lived there all our lives. Pardon my xtra info, but I could be a nuvi salesman. I've referred several people to them. They're absolutely awesome.
  6. Hey thnx geognerd, I'll have to try that. I loaded all my caches once on a trip from NC to FL onto my nuvi. Everytime I'd go into the POI folder on Computer (when nuvi was hooked to computer); i'd see all the caches. I'd mass delete them, but when ever I disconnected my nuvi and powered it up there they were. So frustrating. I had to manually delete each one from the nuvi, talk about a head ache. Oh well, next time i'll try that program.
  7. this is a good question. I hope you get an answer. I loaded about 50 caches onto my nuvi and tried desperately to remove them, but ended up having to delete each on individually. Unless there becomes an easier way, I'll never load caches on my nuvi again.
  8. Here's a group relatively close by. I started the group, but have to admit I need to work on keeping it up. I live in Richlands area(15 mins from Jacksonville). You should be able to find all my info on my profile. Feel free to shoot me an email. I've hit most all the caches in the area, but definitely always looking a caching buddy. I also have a 5 yo son that goes with me. CoastalPlains cachers Chris "Ditchmedic"
  9. Here's the site that helped me immensely. PQ Help GSAK help
  10. 1. GPS? Garmin 60 CSX 2. Paperless device and software??? export to GSAK the Cachemate 3. Software for downloading waypoint?? GSAK 4. Maps?? City Navigator.
  11. That's a good question. I hope somebody has the answer. I'd love to see all POI's as well.
  12. Anybody gave a dog that they've trained to sniff out caches?? Is it possible?? If so how do you go about training them? Just curious?
  13. I did today. I just checked it and it says something about updating software. Oh well.
  14. this is all interesting. Cause I just purchased a NUVI 350 (about 1 week ago) and I was under the assumption that it had the latest version of City Navigator.
  15. had the problem. solution: upgraded to gpsmap60cs.
  16. I don't mind helping. Where would you like me to send the kml file to???
  17. Ding! Ding! Ding! Winner! I switched it to "Off Road" from "Follow Road" and bingo! it worked. Thanks for the accurate and speedy reply. This afternoon it's off to find a couple more caches! The kids are excited, as am I. Thanks again. You're welcome. I had the same issue. The instruction book is sooooo vague. I was baffled. I posted pretty much the same question to NCGO.com and a guy on there helped me. It's nice, cause once you find it you click "found" and it logs the cache under found group and takes it off unfound group, plus your little treasure chest appears open. Cool deal. Chris "Ditchmedic"
  18. When you start hiking towards cache, are you recaculating and choosing "off road" instead of "follow road"?? When you choose "off road" the cache compass/page comes up with found at the bottom of page. See if that helps you.
  19. My wife started out caching with me (first 5 maybe), then she decided she didn't like it. So I go with our 4 year old son.
  20. Looks like a copperhead to me, but I'm no snake expert. So I'd be keeping my distance from it That's exactly what I was thinking.
  21. You might think about a stamp. I use a self inking stamp that is only about the size of this print. Works great.
  22. I got another question, not to steal this post or anything. If you don't even get out of your car to search for a cache (cause there's too many muggles), but you drove to the location, is that a DNF? I say no. I say it's only a DNF if you actually get out and start searching. Just your opinions??
  23. -Geocaching.com site/PQ's to... -GSAK to -GPSr -once there geocaches fall under geocache page which will show all found and unfound caches if I don't filter them in GSAK.
