  1. You'd be a fool to pass it up! There is a large Lowrance following but we also frequent a forum dedicated to Lowrance devices: http://z14.invisionfree.com/Geo_Lowrance_F...dex.php?act=idx I love my Expedition and wouldn't trade it for all the rest! You won't regret it. Regards, will
  2. The expedition has an Easy mode that allows a user to gradually become familiar with how a GPSr works. It will basically plot a trail that you are on and allows you to navigate back. Really simplistic, but a good starter. It would be nice to use while you read up on the manual before switching to Advanced mode. Advanced mode isn't difficult to use, but it gives you lots and lots of configuration options and functions. I would assume that you have the manual as well. If not, don't hesitate to download it from Lowrance. I hope you love it as much as I love mine! And check out this forum by Airmapper dedicated to Lowrance devices and users: http://www.sitekreator.com/geo-lowrance/index.html Regards, will
  3. HOO RA! You made a great choice with the Expedition C! I've been using mine for months now and I still haven't found any problems with it. I absolutely love it. Airmapper-- thanks so much for the link! I'll be visiting often. will Fair winds and following seas....
  4. Another Happy Lowrancee here! I've had my Expedition C for a few months now and I use it both on and off road. I've read many postings from the Sirf 3 users about accuracy, and I'm certain my Lowrance has beat these numbers. I realize that it always depends on the location and interference, but I normally keep from 8 to 10 birds locked on when travelling. As for speed, the dual CPUs seem to push plenty fast. After initial lock on, which is about 45 sec. to 1 minute screen and menu functions are instant. The Screen is very bright and crystal clear. I've actually had to turn the brightness down on mine a couple notches to conserve power. I generally use my 12V adapter in my truck and boat, but a set of duracells have lasted me for many hours.
  5. You've got a lot of Garmin fans in this forum. I was in the same situation you were in just a few months ago. I read countless reviews of the 60CSX and the iFinder Expedition C Plus. I guess I read enough rants from Garmin users to eventually turn me off to the unit. I also saw the obvious price difference for the feature sets involved. I bought the Expedition C Plus and the NauticPath coastal charts for less than I could have got the plain 60CSX (no software). I LOVE my Lowrance. Even without autorouting, I enjoy using it on the road. It tells me where I am and the direction I need to go. I'll be sticking with Lowrance. Good Luck, will
  6. I'm still new to caching, but I spent several months researching several receivers before making my purchase. From what I discovered, all units (worth having) require you to purchase additional maps, if you want any detail. This is how they make their money. Therefore, it is important to get the receiver with the most functionality for the best price you can. I decided on a Lowrance Expedition C Plus. I couldn't be happier with my decision. I strongly concidered the 60CSX, but after reading more reviews than I can count, and countless rants in forums about what users wanted changed, I decided that it REALLY wasn't worth the extra 100.00 or so. I also noted that the accuracy of the 60CSX (posted by users) wasn't any better than what I'm getting with my dual processor Lowrance. Garmin's customer service is said to be top notch. I've called Lowrance once with a software related question, and they were very helpful as well. Do your research. It's a big decision and a big purchase (at least it was for me). I'm sure you're going to love whatever you go with......GPS receivers can open up a world of fun! will
  7. Lowrance Expedition C. Love it even more than all my computers! Awesome accuracy and the full color screen is incredible. Lowrance doesn't advertise as much as the other makers....they don't have to. will
  8. Thanks for the Tip! Will use it. will
  9. I'm having some trouble incorporating my Coastal charts from NauticPath into my MapCreate files. I've tried everything I know to try. I purchased a 1GB SD card so that I could keep all my frequently used charts on one card (eliminating the necessity for frequent card changes). I tried to copy the .at5 files from the Nauticpath card to the 1GB card, but the NauticPath files are encrypted to the card they came on. There is not enough room on the NauticPath card to put additional maps. MapCreate will not import the NauticPath files either (at least not off the card). These are BOTH LEI products! It makes no sense to make them completely incompatible. I even contacted LEI and requested they move the charts to the 1GB card instead of the small card. Naturally, they refused. I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have. Regards, will
  10. [ I will try that. The 100M came with a 128Mb MMC, so I will try a smaller map on that one. If what you say holds true it will be a personal bummer for me (I bought the 1Gb kingston especially for use in the GPSr!) One thing that did alarm me is that the Kingston SD is so thick that the "twist-lock" mechanism that holds the memory cards secure would not fit over it (I just let the batteries hold it in place). The iWay 100M can BROWSE the Kingston and see the files on it, but the maps are not loading (only the base map data is showing). The other thing that bothers me is that IF it is true that this SD card will not work in the 100M, I have already "registered" it with the Mapcreate software, so it is using up one of my precious 5 card licenses! I just got my Ifinder Expedition and I'm using a SanDisk 1GB SD card. Staples is selling them today for 19.98. I bought an extra for my camera. The card fits and functions fine. I did have a problem removing the card from the iFinder, though. It seems the contacts are catching the lip as I try to back it out.....I overcame this problem by cutting an old credit card to the width of the SD card and sliding it beneath the SD card to depress the contacts. This freed up the card and it came right out. Maybe this will save somebody from having to ship off a unit for repair. Hope you enjoy it!
  11. I got it from Ultimate Passage. Great place. They even shipped it express at the standard ground shipping price. I ordered it on a Sunday and had it on Tuesday.
  12. There have been several threads discussing the USB drivers required for Windows XP to see the reader. Have you downloaded the latest drivers from Lowrance.com?
  13. I just received my new Expedition Plus and was surprised to find that it included the MapCreate 6.0 version instead of version 6.3. Does anyone know if this is standard? Lowrance advertises the Plus package with version 6.3. I first thought that I had received an older unit.....but in the included owner's manual it is copyrighted 2006!? I emailed Lowrance to see what they had to say, but I've heard that it sometimes takes a while to hear back. Just wanted to check and see if anyone else has experienced anything like this. I'm really hoping somebody will reply and tell me that Lowrance will happily offer me a free upgrade to 6.3 with proof of purchase Thanks for all your help and please keep up the good work!
  14. Kudos to the Groundspeak Forum! I've gained some fabulous information and insight into this wonderful world of GPS adventuring. I'm looking to purchase my first handheld unit and I've narrowed my choices down to the Lowrance Expedition C, the Magellan Explorist 600 and the Garmin 60CSx. I'm really leaning toward the Lowrance as my prior navigation experience is maritime based (and lowrance has built a strong reputation). My question is about the "electronic compass" advertised with the Expedition model. Does this compass allow a user to obtain an accurate bearing while standing still? The Magellan manuals specifically state that the 3 axis compass will do so. But I haven't found anything, in either the user manuals or in other reviews about the Lowrance's compass. Any other comments or advice are gratefully welcome. Thanks in advance for your help and input. Will
