  1. #1 don't stick your hand in spots you can not see in unless you have a flashlight, gloves or like to get bit or stung. Usually after awhile you will get the feel of the game, you know its a regular cache and you have read the logs to see if things are off or other info from other cachers. Then you go out and start to notice the terrain and what would accomidate that type of cache. Then if you can connect with a local cacher and go out with them you might learn a bit of knowledege. Welcome to the addiction!
  2. I am running the Accu Power 2900's seem to be holding up so far.
  3. I also do the gpx files to the gps but then also load the file in GSAK and then out put as a HTML file which goes on my cell phone. If I have a problem or need to read the logs I have them on the phone. Then when I find a cache I can go to the html file and click on log the find and it will load up the web page so its logged asap. Or the other way is the geocaching WAP page. I can not go total paperless as I usually have a genral map of the area with caches. but its about as close as you can get.
  4. Yes go premium and get the gpx files and import into topo 7 then send to the pn -20 or 40 works great and not to bad of a process. Also go visit for additonal info. http://forum.delorme.com/ GSAK while it is nice is not a got to have if that is all you are doing..I use it to keep straight my html files and other info.
  5. Yes geocaching is a universal language.. I was looking for a cache awhile back here in arizona and a car pulls up and they get out with gps in hand. Turns out they were a couple from Germany heading to the Grand canyon caching the route as they went. We chatted a bit after we jointly searched for the cache.
  6. Have you right clicked and gone to view source on the picture? copy that info and paste it to the location?
  7. I would say you are hooked line and sinker no escaping now.
  8. I would also suggest looking at Delorme PN-20's as the 40 is now out and people are selling there older units and they are also being discounted at some retailers to make way for the 40's.
  9. Ok that is all the wap link will provide short and sweet and works as you said on my Mogul 6800. Now what I also use is the HTML file off of GSAK bring up the cache and you can log it and find nearby caches. I also have google maps/gps but don't use them and rely on pn-20 for the hard core stuff. I am running wm 6.1 on my unit.
  10. I for one will keep it short and sweet if I am on a major caching trip. Trying to recall which cache was which after a 30 cache find day is difficult. Usually there is not enough daylight to try to write a note in a log book in the truck. I am talking about being in the backcountry with tough caches climbing the hills and such. Now if you are in a city enviroment then that would be doable. Plus I will log short and sweet and then come back and update with additional info and pics after all caches have been logged in.
  11. Embra Thanks for the link, yea changing it works but trying to drive off road down a wash and grab the next cache thats not a possible option. Cowboy yep I figured you all were the guru beta testers and knew everything about anything. as for another note I did go to the site you mentioned for batteries and currently trying the accu power 2900's they seem to last a touch longer than the regular aa's Thanks for the assist guys! Yes went and looked and thats what I am talking about, I visit the forum at Delorme but never the Blog now have to add another to check on .
  12. Ok I have searched around (here and Delorme) and not found the answer or I missed it. I am sure Cowboy papa, embra, totem and chip will be quick with this one. I understand Chips team is working on a geocaching update, but my question is does the 40 have the found feature like the 60 does? is it worth having? Went caching last weekend and my partner kept logging his finds using that feature. I in turn had to manually write each of the 29 finds down. I currently have the 20 but looking at switching to the 40 soon.
  13. I use my Titan 6800 next to my PN-20 but it is only along for the HTML files brought in from GSAK plus logging in to obtain additional information The GPS is not what I bought the Titan for.
  14. Congrats! noticed you joined back in 2006 and this is your 1st post, thats pretty amazing it seems as well.
  15. I was at REI and bought several of the X large bison tubes, they can hold several nickles in them, they are huge..
  16. Try to find someone in your area and try a caching trip together. much better than the book in my opinion.
  17. Out here most of us use a camera and take a pic of the 1st page showing the cache name etc. reflecting that you are indeed getting a 1st to find. Yes getting collecting 1st to finds does not pay you anything it does give us in the Deep Southwest geocaching project site additional points and makes the hunt a little bit more fun. here is the link to my stats over there. http://dgpstats.com/cacherdetails?c=57956
  18. I had one I put out on Monday a 1/2 hour later it was published, that was very fast and prompt service. As posted usually it takes awhile depending on there workload.
  19. For less dollars you can get on e-bay and locate a older etrex vista serial port unit for almost nothing. I found a lot of caches with mine and it be be a great starter gps unit. just a lot of pc's have gone away with serial and gone usb ports.
  20. Yes that is a good rule of thumb and generally works, but the creativity of cachers is extreme. you might discover a old piece of wood that appears to be used to tighten up a barb wire fence. look close and there has been a hole drilled in the bottom and a micro inserted. is there a bolt on a cattle guard or fence that looks out of place? might be a log inside that there bolt. you could be moving rocks to get to the cache stop and smell the roses one of those rocks you just moved might actually have a hole drilled in the bottom side. rock faces with cracks and crevices are great hidey holes a small natural looking rock in front hides it well. of course using desert contrasting paint on the cache helps even more. is there a sprinkler head under a bush? and the bush is in the middle of no where? So yes geocaching can be frustrating but look at the fun of discovering them..
  21. Delorme Pn-20 the 40's are out thus they are being reduced in price, they have great map software. A co cacher has a 60 and he is constantly wishing he had the delorme topo maps. So compare apples to oranges Garmin is not the only game in town.
  22. Geocaching for exercise is great, I have done about 20 miles since Sunday. 6 hours retrieving a cache on top of a mountain. So look at the terrain ratings the tougher they are the better for your heart rate. Guess in your area you would miss out on Cholla and Cat claw which adds to the fun.
  23. Delorme PN-20s are coming down now with the 40 out suggest looking there also.
