OT, I believe the "MotherLode" (1,700 cu in) would be the next closest size up from the "H.A.W.G." (1,100 cu in). The "Transformer" is a little smaller than the H.A.W.G. at (950 cu in). Probably better to err on the side of a larger pack. ~bLaZe007
  2. quote: Ok, I'm intrigued. American Light Infantry..... Tell me if I'm on the right track, please. T. You are close. A.L.I.C.E. stands for "All-purpose, Lightweight, Individual, Carrying Equipment". My friend is in the Marine Corps and recommended I get one at an Army/Navy store when I was back in college. I used it to lug around massive amounts of books and now use it whenever I take an overnight trip. It is a great ruck sack, built to last and shows no signs of wear even after many years of use. Long live mil spec! ~bLaZe007 [This message was edited by blaze007 on July 16, 2003 at 05:22 PM.]
  3. quote: WEB SITE UPDATED! We have updated our web site to reflect a NEW 25% off ALL CamelBak Packs. The original offer was for 20%, but we are starting to explode with sales, so I decided to make it a better savings to everyone here on the boards! dadgum! I Ordered my H.A.W.G. this morning a few hours before the Blow Out.......oh well. Anyway, I can hardly wait for this bad boy to reach my door. I expect to use it for Geocaching in the summer and snowboarding in the winter! Been waiting a while for it to come back in stock. I could have purchased it earlier elsewhere but wanted to support a fellow cacher who is providing excellent prices, product and service to our community. Whoooo Hoooo. ~bLaZe007

I received it today and let me say it is pretty darn swank! I can assure you it will be put to good use this summer. Shuey is a credit to the community and I look forward to doing business with him in the very near future! Regards, ~bLaZe007

Thanks. ~bLaZe quote: I wish I could give you a better answer than this, but I just got off the phone with CamelBak. They said there is a B.O. on all BLACK, and DESERT CAMO styles for at least 7-9 weeks. I am one of the only suppliers from what I understand with a few Desert Camo H.A.W.G.S in stock. (3 to be exact) As soon as the BLACK styles become available I will post it here to let everyone know. Team Shuey Team Shuey Riverview, Florida Shuey: Any UPDATE on the Black Military H.A.W.G.S.? I was hoping to get one before the start of the summer. Thanks. ~bLaZe
  8. quote: Last chance to get the CamelBaks at these prices will be 05/16/03. We figured that we would do much better than we have in the geocaching community, and CamelBak is cracking down on us for having our prices so low. How do those of us who are interested in purchasing a Camelbak that is currently out of stock and are not reasonably expected to be in stock by 05/16/03 purchase them at the "discounted" price? Are we just out of luck? Just wondering. Thanks.

  10. I have a Meridian Platinum as well and felt the same way when I saw the gap between the cover and the unit itself. However, when I looked closer I noticed that the actual waterproofing (water entering the battery compartment) comes from the rubber seal around the battery compartment and the raised plastic that corresponds to it on the battery cover. I think the seal is pretty robust once you clip it into place. I could be wrong since I haven't had the courage to submerge it yet. I guess there could be an issue with water getting in through the screw holes.....who knows.
  11. For the same price ($239.00) you can get the Magellan Meridian Platinum from Shop Harmony. Several members and myself have purchased our Platinums from there and have had no problems. In my experience the Platinum is a solid performer. If you are interested you can search the boards for the shop harmony threads or visit www.shopharmony.com yourself. Hope this helps.
  12. I received my screen protectors from Strong Engineering recently and they are a perfect fit for my Meridian Platinum. They are super clear and durable. It will take me some time to use the pack I ordered. It gives me some piece of mind that I won't screw up my screen and have to incur an expensive repair bill. I was even able to pass along some of the free screen protectors that Brad from Strong included with my order in one of the caches I visited this week. Hopefully, the cacher that finds them may be able to use one of them. Strong Engineering gets two thumbs up for a quality product and customer service that goes above and beyond. I recommend them to anyone looking for GPS screen protectors.
  13. The abundance of caches in Rockland County, NY and the surrounding areas was a big determining factor for me investing in a GPS etc. I have already bagged my first 4 caches this week (one on High Tor and three on Hook Mountain). I enjoy hiking but the added incentive and excitement of looking for a cache adds a whole new dimension to it. It's a really great feeling to go out and hike for a few hours and find a cache or two in the middle of nowhere. My GPS was pretty on target as far as getting me to the caches but I am thinking a more detailed map (Mapsend Topo) might be more helpful in areas where I am not so familiar with the territory. I was able to fill in the gaps in the base map because I am familiar with the area but if I were somewhere I wasn't aquainted with I would be at a total loss. I wish I could run a demo of the Mapsend Topo software so I can determine if there is any value for me or not.
  14. You can use the following link to their contact form (Which I used to originally used to contact them): http://strongengineering.com/contact.htm OR You can contact Brad at Strong Engineering with the following email address: bstrong@strongengineering.com Good Luck!
  15. I placed an order with Strong Engineering for screen protectors for my Meridian Platinum very late on Saturday night along with sending them an email mentioning I was a geocacher and thanking them for their product. I then received an email from Brad at Strong Engineering first thing Sunday morning confirming my purchase and that it would be shipped first thing Monday morning. More importantly, he wanted to thank all the Geocachers for their business and that he would add some extra screen protectors for me to pass along as geoloot. It's nice to see a company with great customer service and an unsolicited willingness to go the extra mile.
  16. Just received my Meridian Platinum today from Shopharmony! I must say it's pretty swank. I will probably be heading out to find my first cache tomorrow if all goes well!
  17. Your point is well taken. It uses a combination of both GPS and PCS technology to determine the location of the user. Both are notoriously bad in the areas you described. When looking at their coverage maps it does not seem that they have very good propogation outside of the large market cities.
  18. Anyone else see the commercials for Wherify? It is supposedly a service to keep track of your children using GPS technology. It was a gps unit in the form of something that looked like a watch and a parent could located their whereabouts of their child with a phone call and via the web. Seems like a potentially interesting concept.
  19. Sorry I posted this in the wrong board. My apologies!

  21. pbarr86...... Harmony Computers is located at the following address: 1801 Flatbush Ave Brooklyn, NY 11210 I am not too sure where Holliston, MA is but I would think it would take three to four days for delivery, but that is just an uneducated guess. Just as an update I just received my tracking number from UPS. Shouldn't be long now! Don't worry about the Meridian Platinum. If it sucks we can go jump off the same cliff together!
  22. Congrats pbar86. I ordered a Meridian Platinum from Shopharmopny this week as well. I am in the same boat as you anxiously awaiting its arrival.
  23. I was also considering whether or not to spring/upgrade for/to the Mapsend Topo software as well. I only feel slightly pressured about the purchase since Magellan has that $50 Rebate for those who purchase a Meridian and the Mapsend Topo software. I think I will wait until I receive the GPS and see how extensive the installed software is and how it meets my needs. I'll have some time to check it out before the Rebate expires in December.
  24. I just ordered a Magellean Meridian Platinum from Harmony this week too. The low price was too good to pass up. The favorable reviews of Harmony on the boards outweighed my apprehension about not ordering from a "big name" website. Since I am local to the NY Metro area hopefully the shipping will be quick. I probably could have just dropped by the store in person but my laziness won out that day. Oh well.....
  25. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I actually did quite a bit of research before purchasing my GPS. The boards here were a tremendous resource for opinions/information on the various models and seemed to answer the questions I had along with supplying other suggested resources. I can see this developing into a large habit which is a good thing. I am just sad I didn't catch on to this in the early spring/summer months since the weather here is getting progressively worse. However, I can see caching in the snow being very fun and extremely challenging.
