  1. Seems that this sort of thing becomes a hot button topic immediately after an attack - WTC93, PanAm over Lockerbie, and then it fades into the background as people get complacent. I feel that the bottom line is, if someone REALLY WANTS to fly a plane into a building, nothing will stop them. The trick is stopping them wanting to. Until we work out that this can only be done with hearts and minds, not bombs and bullets, none of our caches will be safe.
  2. I like the idea of being able to get Bug IDs online and right away - not sure about the PDF thing though. Might it not be simpler to request an ID, give a credit card number, and just get a number emailed to you? Then you could attach it however you liked - and the people who tie a printout to the bug with a bit of string and then complain that it gets lost have only themselves to blame.
  3. When these things first appeared in the UK one of the major banks dubbed them "cashpoints" - the name has stuck.
  4. What do you call a barmaid who can balance 12 pints on her head? Beatrix What do you call a man wearing 2 raincoats? Max What do you call a man with a shovel in his head? Doug And yes, I know I'm going to hell for this one, but hey, it had to be done!! What do you call a woman who can suck a golfball through 35' of garden hose? Darling
  5. I had heard that these things (quite aside from the whole Big Brother aspect) were rather useless, given that if someone takes your kid they're likely to hold them indoors, in a building, so the GPS signal woundn't get through - or maybe they have more powerful transmitters? Anyone?
  6. Be advised be advised - all kittens in the basket, inbound at this time. Message ends.
  7. Ok, I *know* I'm going to get flamed for this one, but maybe I can borrow Crim's asbestos underoos Yes, thanks for updating the Wired page - perhaps you can stick a 10'x10' hazard-orange flag on top of the cache, and a radio beacon inside so we can find it. I understand that there are people who cache with small people or who prefer a nice walk in the park to an arduous bushwhack...I can't help feeling that directions (park here, go here, climb on top of this) are best placed encrypted in the hints. That way, if you want them you can have them, otherwise those of us for whom planning the hunt is as much fun as hunting the cache can make our own way - if that involves parking on a freeway, then we're probably to stupid to live, and Darwinism will take care of us. PS No offense, 1000111 - I liked the cache the way it was - just trying maintain some mystery to the hunt, else before we know it we'll have guided tours of the top 10 caches in the area and stickers on ammo boxes saying "This product contains items known to the state of California to cause frustration when you can't find the bugger".
  8. quote:Originally posted by MrMom:Caches such as this - DOES give ALL of us a bad name. Hmmmm some believe that we are shovel wielding hole digging environment destroying maniacs. The negative image is derived from a poorly placed cache. Some wonder why sections of land are closed to the sport. Do we police ourselves or do we let them legislate it. I certainly do not want the government lurking in our sport. I dont know of any piece of non-privately owned land where there is a sign stating "Geocaching on this land is prohibited by xyz law". Can you post a pik of such a sign? I do know park and forest rangers who, if they find a cache, will either check it out to make sure there's nothing illegal in it or have experts come down and inspect it, but otherwise they leave it alone. After all, its in their interests to have people use the park, and geocaching is generally no more destructive than camping, fishing or hiking. As far as the govt lurking in our sport goes, absent the govt we wouldn't have a sport. Despite Markwell's obvious qualities I don't see him placing and maintaining a bunch of satellites for our caching pleasure. Our sport exists at the discretion of the US government, all it takes is one president to put SA back into the mix and we're finished (call it a measure to increase homeland security, if you like). That having been said, I do agree that if a cache is placed in what might well be a dangerous place, the onus is on the cacher to make this clear. For example, Mexican Standoff's 2nd section clearly states "#2 Requires SCUBA gear to reach. DO NOT attempt if you are not a certified diver." Not having hunted for Wired, I couldn't tell you about how dangerous the access is, but judging from the map I would concur with the previous posters, it does appear that the area is accessible by a number of different routes, not least of all from the residential area at Midway Court. The roadway doesn't appear to be elevated, and it would appear that the cache is far enough from the highway for it not be perilous to its seekers. To close, I'd like to quote from this site's FAQ section: "What are the rules in Geocaching? Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple: 1. Take something from the cache 2. Leave something in the cache 3. Write about it in the logbook Where you place a cache is up to you." Would seem to cover all the bases.
  9. Dear Mr Dodger My wife and I are hoping to spend a few days travelling in your neck of the woods and would like to make reservations at your hotel. Would you be able to let us know when you will be accepting guests? Many thanks Mr & Mrs T Ravel-Bug
  10. ...will attempt extraction and medevac this weekend.
  11. I looked at the Ultimate GPS Case in Eastern Mountains Sports the other day - liked its functionality. However, I find the one drawback with the case is that its a bit of a nightmare to use with anything bigger than a small daypack. You can't wear it on your hip if you've got a waistbelt on your pack, over the shoulder doesn't work, and if you wear it just around your neck then it dangles and gets in the way. However, on the same rack they had this little gem: http://www.ems.com/products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=291773&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1971&bmUID=1036683163023 Just the right size to hold a basic sportrack, will clip either to a strap or belt - really handy if you want it close at hand, simply clip it to your shoulder strap, the case is snug enough to hold the GPSr without having to zip it up, and there's a little side pocket that holds a pair of batteries comfortably. You can place the unit in there head-up so it holds the signal, and just take it out when you want to check where you're headed. Sure, it won't do all the things that the Ultimate will in terms of storage, but for size and convenience when you're carrying more gear I find its perfect for the job.
  12. I don't know, back in my day no geocacher worth his GPSr would have passed up the opportunity to log a cache. 37' waves, sub-zero temperatures, crazy currents, and homocidal tug-boat operators were meat and drink to us back then - mind you, in those days we had to walk barefoot to school in the snow, uphill both ways, with a sack of coal for the classroom fire on our backs, and when we got home our dads would murder us in cold blood and dance upand down on our graves singing hallelujah... ...ok, so where can we hire jet skis? Last one with hypothermia's a rotten egg...
  13. Sorry, just had to see if this worked..
  14. Alas there is no window in that case - bit of a bugger, really - I tend to clip the case to my pack strap and leave it in there until I know I'm close to the spot, then I take it out. Its snug enough that I don't have to zip it up so I can take it out occassionaly to check how I'm doing. Sorry for the confusion.
  15. EMS does a nice cellphone case which I find stores my sportrak nicely - link is http://www.ems.com/products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=291773&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1971&bmUID=1035916313492 It has a belt loop and a little clip set up that means you can clip it around a strap on a backpack should you so desire. Unit is head-up in the case if you put it that way up, zip closure, little side-pocket that will hold a couple of batteries - for $8 its hard to find a better deal.
  16. I'm happy to go on 11/10 as it stands right now, possibly because I'm a looney limey and have scant regard for my personal safety Seriously, I think the other posters have a point - we will be better off with a larger boat. According to the guy at Boat Livery, the boats in question are 6hp which he doesn't reccomend taking on the East River, although it is do-able. He does have 10hp boats available, but I don't know how much that would cost us. Tides will also be a factor. However, apparently there are no mooring facilities at South Brother at all, which presents its own set of problems. Team Bubbletree mentioned a 20ft fishing boat a while back - I'm guessing this is a v-hull? Without a (reasonably) flat-bottomed craft (skiff or dory) I fear we're going to get wet coming into the beach. The kayak option works (brrrrr...) but without knowing the currents & tides in the area I'd be loath to suggest paddling from the lower west side around to South Brother. Let's work out who's definitely in so we know the numbers, finalise a date, and then work out if we can get a boat. If we can get a concensus by this weekend I'll head up to the marina and find out what the bigger boats cost, and what our options are. I have a small amount of small boat handling experience, so if the worst comes to the worst and Tommy can't make it, or we have to take 2 boats out, I'd be happy to pilot one of the ships of fools
  17. ...but TeddyP's selling a Magellan 310 further down the page - $75 ono
  18. Any weekend in Nov works for me. FWIW, I did some digging on South Brother - no-one seems to know who owns it, all the various agencies know is that they don't "Privately held, but we don't know who," seems to be pretty much the pat response, although Hampton Scows surfaced as one possible, as did Manhattan Sand. Sounds like the bird-watching cover story Mopar suggested would work well.
  19. Looks like the 3rd works for people - late morning, 11ish, somewhere near we're planning to pick up the boat? What's the score with the boat - do we have a source?
  20. If anyone's got one of these for sale, I'd love to hear from them.
