  2. I have an iMate SP5 smartphone running windows mobile. I use some software call GPS Tuner. It does use offline PCX, and LOC files. It shows me the compass view to caches,. There are no maps on the smartphone version. The PPC (Pocket PC) version does allow maps, and even own scanned maps. I hope to upgrade to a HTC 3400 or something similar and use the better PPC version of GPS Tuner. Link to GPS Tuner: http://www.gpstuner.com/ I loaded GeoCacheNavigator on my The Gold Digger 6110, and it looks pretty impressive. If you use it in online mode it will list the 10 (or so) nearest caches, over an internet connection. However if you state it is not allowed to access the network, you can still manually load the a point and navigate to it with the compass view. It also has an interesting radar view.
  3. If you need some assistance with regards to the making of the web site in either ASP 3 or ASP.net, I am willing to help. Can also help with SQL and XML (aka GPX) queries.
  4. Hi Nick I will gladly take you around to 10 or so caches on the East Rand, if you like, if your off day falls on a weekend. You also welcome to have a real South African 'braai' (BBQ) with us. We will gladly host you for a day. There are some tourist buses, but they are not as good as those in London. Best is to hire a car (or let us host you). Some caches near the airport: 1) Hunter's Treasure 2) Hohannes Who? 3) Spot A Boeing 4) Life's Little Destructions. Contact me off line if you are interested in doing a days caching. Regards Anton
  5. I am also glad about the outcome, and hope you all have fun at the event. We wont make it as R300.00 is a bit steep. And there is more then just two of us. Hope to see some photos though!
  6. My son has also decided with his own geoaching name. So welcome to "Ding bat". He has done one cache so far. My brother in law also started on his own a few months ago. And is upto about 110 caches, and closing fast on our find count. His gc name is "The Gold Diggers". -Anton
  7. I went out and bought Getaway magazine yesterday. It states something like "pocket knifes and jewelry". I agree that both words are incorrect, but the article does not make us a knife wielding bunch of cachers, stashing away jewelry. In the *spirit* of the article I can live with those two descriptions. The complete article is on one page, with almost half the page dedicated to a photo. The other quarter of the page is about three caches Getaway have hidden, which leaves the other quarter to describe geocaching. Not a lot of space, to fully describe geocaching. I do hope however that they do reprint an article with a little more information, better describing geocaching.
  8. I have not been on the forums for a week, and then this BIG news happens. Eric it was great having you as a reviewer, and it is a huge role to fulfil for your protégé. And yes, I agree with all the others, the best team for the job is Andy & Lindy. Erik, all the best on your “reviewer's retirement”. Andy & Lindy: Thanks for taking over the reigns from Erik, and giving up on some of your geocaching "seek" time, to do the admin work for S.A.
  9. While we were in P.E over the December 2007 holidays, I met up with a caching family called KingRobert. The found 5 or so caches and were very enthusiastic about hiding their first cache. Next day I heard from them they were held up, car, phones and 2 gps's gone. Luckily the car was found a day or so later. Looks like the hobby/sport here in South Africa is starting to lean towards an "extreme" sport. Glad to see that they have continued caching, as EC needs more cachers! Regards Anton
  10. Ek sal een vir die reeks weg steek hier op die oos-rand! Groete Anton (DamhuisSpan)
  11. One of our FTF's was lying in wait for 9 months before we got to it, and it was a 6 and a half hour walk there and back. This cache rates in my top 5 caches. It is 10 Stop Hill (GC11PGQ) and in the Utenhage area in the Groendal Wilderness Area. I see to date it has only been us visiting it.
  12. The next WWFM event is coming up for the 10th of May. I see WWFM III - Cape Town by The Huskies & Goofster (GC19HFG) is already set up. Is anyone willing to host the event in JHB? This time round would prefer to join rather then host. Willing to assist though, and will sponser a South African coin as a prise. Where would be a good place to host it? Maybe somewhere in midrand? or how about Emerentia dam? Regards Anton
  13. Click on you user name (top right of the screen) then on "Find Caches Along a Route" under Premioum member Options. Then click on the "Upload GPX/KML" file. (slightly hidden but is a TAB option) Hope this helps. Regards Anton
  14. One way to see where someone has been, is to do a search for caches found by "xxxx". It shows most recent caches first, so it shows a good indeication of how busy a caher has been.
  15. Got them thanks, lets hope we get many more of the major routes public, could make a huge difference when going caching in remote locations.
  16. Geocaching.com have this nice feature where we can add routes in finding caches, which is nice if you have travelled the route before, as you then have a track to search on. Is it possible that we can collaborate, and add some of the major routes in for all South African roads? My suggestion is that we prefix the public route with ZA, and then the major points of interest. Example: ZA - East Rand, Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Colesburg, Cradock, Port Elizabeth (this one is active publicly and created by me) For instance I am looking for this route ZA – East Rand - Witbank, Middeburg, Nelspruit. If searching in the ZA keyword, one could then find all public routes in South Africa. Any other sugestions?
  17. If there is a event around the 23rd we will be there! How about Happy Valey? but anywhere in PE is fine with us. We should be able to find it Regards Anton
  18. As per previous post, we will be in PE for 2 to 3 weeks this December. If I plant a few caches arounf PE, would some of local cachers be willing to maintain them for me? I will contact a willing cacher offline, should there be a response. Regards Anton
  19. I have been looking for a few extream caches, and came accross this one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...=y&decrypt= Even if this would be my 1000 find, I would skip it.
  20. Hi All Due to some possible issues with Nelson Mandela Square, I have had to change the venue to a new location. The new location is in Edenvale. If you were planning to come, please check the new co-ordinates. We were a total of 7 teams before the change, and hope it does not go down to much. A free beer on me for the 1st 20 people there, because of the inconvenience caused. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...9b9e4d789" Regards Anton
  21. I had an old Palm III lying in the cupboard for the past 4 years, unused. From one of the Icenrey videozines, he spoke about cachemate, and paperless caching. Demo version only allowed 10 caches to be loaded, so I thought I would try it on two caches, out in the field. I bought the app for a grand price of $8.00. Only thing that bothers me is if the batteries fall out of the Palm III, I loose everything. Dont want that to happen when you visited 10 caches.
  22. Hi Zonika Glad you are joining us in the event. Lucky that you guys are now having two events there on one day!! I will have all the info by Monday that we require, but what you can do so long is do a search on gc.com, for WWFM and you will see the event for Durban come up. Base your event so long on that one. I am going with the same idea, that each team must swap out a TB at the event. The log book, etc I will still get from Podcacher.com. Would also like to take the photograph of all SA FM events at exactly the same time. Keep your eye on this forum, as this is where I will post most info. Regards Anton
  23. We will be there on Friday night, if all goes well. Hope to leave at 1PM, and do a few caches along the way. We need another 30 cahes to get to 100, but I doubt that will happen before we get to Utrecht. Would have been amazing to make the 100th on top of the mountain. I think Neville will make his 100th one there. Are we having a braai together on Saturday, in the afternoon / evening? Must I make my own booking for a camp site? or would there be enough camping sites so as not to worry about a booking? Looking forward to meeting you all there.
  24. Ok more infor from PodCacher.com. Looks like they are going from DST back to normal time on the 4th of November. From PodCacher.com Anton - We are GMT -8 and we are currently in Daylight Savings Time, but that ends Nov 4. So, currently you are 9 hours ahead of us (because of DST), but on Nov 10th, you will be 10 hours ahead of us. Thanks for bringing up this question. Wow - it gets complicated!! Thus on the 10th November we will be 10 hours ahead of their 9AM time, which makes it 7PM our time. Sorry for the back and forth of the time zones. I dont normaly deal with them in this way. Regards Anton
