  1. Part 2: Number of new South African caches

    RSA%20new%20caches%20per%20year.jpg

On average 7.3 new caches were published per day, about 14% more than in 2014.

What's with the high amount of cache placements in 2013? The GPS trail perhaps?

Danie: Are these pictures permenanly available on bitbucket?

Can I reference them on the www.geocachingsa.com web site?

  2. So... very old request. Did anyone happen to download the podcast linked to above? The website seems to be down and I'd like a copy. :(

I am still in contact with the presenters from time to time via facebook.

He ... or rather they ... are know as "Ruth Edwin Landman" on Facebook.

  3. Another interesting set of stats from the provinces:

Favouritie Points awarded (per Province) - as of 14 July 2015:

    • #1 Western Cape 9859 (31.9% of total for SA)
    • #2 Gauteng 8326 (27.0%)
    • #3 KwaZulu Natal 4907 (15.9%)
    • #4 Eastern Cape 3372 (10.9%)
    • #5 Mpumalanga 1516 (4.9%)
    • #6 Free State 1484 (4.8%)
    • #7 North West 755 (2.5%)
    • #8 Limpopo 331 (1.1%)
    • #9 Northern Cape (324 (1.0%)

This one is interesting .. I would have thought that we in GP are the most number of cachers, and we find the most number of caches.

Meaning we have more FP to allocate.

Does this mean that the GP cachers cache a lot outside of GP?

  4. What about Favourite points to Cache type corrleation?

I am going to hazard a guess (hypothesise) that Earthcache type gets more FPs per find in general?

    Wherigo 10.5 FPs/cache
    Letterbox 5.8 FPs/cache
    EarthCache 4.6 FPs/cache
    Virtual 4.3 FPs/cache
    Multi 3.4 FPs/cache
    Mystery 3.2 FPs/cache
    Traditional 1.5 FPs/cache

Interesting - Wherigo is so "enjoyable" - yet there are so few of them - and we tend to not do them that easily as cachers!

Strange anomoly. I guess itis "fear of the unknown"?

Great to see a new WhereI go popped up in Kzn this past week.

The FP seem to be based on the (reverse) popularity of the cache types.

(Meaning the fewer of the cache type the more the FP count)

  5. Thank you for the "bad" news. Now I can concentrate my activities on Namibia.

    Hi fleuchi

Cincol is correct in that you will stay inside the international portion of the airport.

But should you come through to the domestic part, then give me a call.

I can take you to one or 2 caches in the area, so you can get at least one or two caches in Johannesburg.

I live 5 minutes from the airport. So it should be no problem to help.

    Regards

    Anton

  6. Hi.

I have started writing a Trackable Race engine using the 2 GSAK databases, and I am looking for some beta testers.

It is an open source project on Google Code (https://code.google.com/p/geocaching-tb-race/)

The idea is that the 2 GSAK databases contain :

    1) All the Trackables ... and their logs, and

    2) All the geocaches visited by the trackables.

The Scoring engine will output a file with all missing GC numbers of all the geocaches, which must then be added to GSAK using some available macros.

The Race master (for lack of a better word) can use any of 25 (and growing) rules with some customisation.

    Example:

    RaceRule="TotalDistanceInKilometersRule"           	,  startDate="2014-01-01", endDate="2014-01-31", pointAllocation="  0.02",  reportColumnName="2014-Jan-Distance-In-Km"
    RaceRule="TotalDistanceInKilometersRule"           	,  startDate="2014-02-01", endDate="2014-02-28", pointAllocation="  0.04",  reportColumnName="2014-Feb-Distance-In-Km"

So for January all km travelled earns 0.02 points per km, and for February 0.04.

The scoring engine outputs into various formats such as TAB, SCV, and JSON. (at the same time if required)

Anybody interested in assisting in test driving the program?

Some of the other available rules are:

    AmountOfProvinceAndStateBordersCrossed

    DifTerEqualOrAbove2Point5

    DistanceForAllDropsAndVisitsInMiles

    MegaCacheVisitRule

    NotMoved

    UniqueCacherDiscoveriesMade

    DroppedOffCacheNameContainsKeywords

    AmountOfCountriesVisited

  7. Hey Folks! I am contemplating a trackable which travels not via the mail from cacher to cacher. I am from the United States and am trying to make a connection with individuals abroad who might be willing for me to send them a trackable and then reach out in a similar manner to someone else further away. For instance, I have a buddy in Afghanistan who would receive my trackable and then send it on to you. If you're interested, please send me a message via my profile page. There is no need to share any personal information, I am simply gauging interest. Let me know. I hope to hear from you.

    -Zach

My personal view is that letters travel through the mail.

    And trackables travel through geocaches.

If you would like to send things through the mail then look at http://www.postcrossing.com/ .

I think that is much more sounds like in line with what you want to do.

  8. I had some problems with Norton and in an on-line session they removed a lot of my add-ons so my question is what are a few interesting and useful ones you are using.

I use a Dutch dictionary and Xinha to put HTML in on a cache page. Interested to hear about some more

I also use the Dutch dictionary, as well as the Afrikaans and South African English dictionaries.

Then I have some html development addons which I wont go into ... they assist me in creating and debugging web pages.

I then have Adblock Plus 2.5.1 Stops most adverts on most sites) It has a ABP in a stop sign as an icon.

Greaemonekey to be able to run a few geocaching.com scripts

Forecast fox .... to tell me the weather.

And then also Download manager to be able to download videos form youtube and watch them off-line without st-st-stuttering.

(for some reason I dont see the icon in m y menu at the moment ... The icon is 3 balloons ... red blue yellow)

  9. Well Done Noddy.

Hi guys, me and my Fiance are new to this. Can someone please tell me if there is a group that we can join or chat to in the Centurion area.

    Gauteng Pretoria Centurion?

We are planning to do our first hunt this weekend. Wish us luck.

    Hi Ga2ar

Welcome to geocaching and the forums

The easiest is to go to a few events, and Pretoria has a lot of them. There you will find lots of like minded geocachers, and will be able to hook up and go caching with a few of them.

  10. Hi everyone

I'm new here :) Starting caching on 01/01/2014! Loving every minute of it and have hooked in a bunch of other people (dont think they'll use the forums). Have yet to get my bestie onto Geocaching, I think she fails to see the fun in it but maybe we'll take her along on a caching trip.

Learning lots, and enjoying finding the caches around CPT! Can't wait to do ALL of them (haha extreme goal I'm sure!) as well as try some outside of CPT and when we travel to East London and PE during the year for family visits! Will be nice not to just drive straight to the end location but be able to stop off and find (or at least hunt for haha) some caches :D

Where does one find out about the Cache Events in the area?

    Hi Rat Tails.

Welcome to geocaching and the forums. I have not been here in a while.

The best place to see events is on the weekly news letter sent out by geocaching.com.

I think the news letter lists all events within about 200 km from home co-ords, and then also lists the upcoming mega events world wide.

We have an upcoming Mega in Durban in October.

  11. Hi

Does anyone know how to export all the statistics on your profile to an excel document. We want to keep our own records and apart from entering the data one by one from the quick view page we cannot think of an easier and quicker way to do it.

Any one know of a good way to do this.

    Are you premium members?

If so then I am quite sure Excel should be able to import the XML pocket query in some form.

I'll look into it if you are, and need assistance.

I renamed the gpx file to XML and then did this:

    Manually Importing XML Data

    1. Start Excel and then click Open on the File menu.
    2. In the Files of type list, select XML files.
    3. Select the XML file you want to open and then click Open.
    4. If the file has multiple XSL style sheets, you are prompted to select one of the style sheets. Select a style sheet if you want to appy a style sheet. Or, click Cancel to not select a style sheet

Imported all the info into columns in Excel.

  13. I think you might need to enable GPX Version 1.0.1 to get the Fav points in the GPX files.

This is set to 1.0.1 since a long time. Do you get FPs in GPXs ?

(observing the iPhone App, it seems that it downloads additional data like FPs via the API)

Hmm this is interesting. It seems like it is not the the GPX file, but part of the GS API.

I gathered it from this GSAK link:

  15. And still nothing

Which is curious since the RelNotes for the iOS 5.1 version state that favorite points are available in pocket queries ? But I just checked a current GPX - nothing ...

I think you might need to enable GPX Version 1.0.1 to get the Fav points in the GPX files.

    Go to: Your Profile

    Then: Account Details

Then by : Your Preferences select Change (bottom left)

Then change: GPX Version Preference To V1.0.1
