  1. Perhaps it is just one of those temporary, growing pains things, but is anyone else noticing that most of the caches are not showing up? Swanlakers
  2. First off, I an not a layer so take this as you will. The woodlands is a community association. Taking some information from their website: ..."The Woodlands is not an incorporated city so it cannot pass laws or ordinances of its own"... It seems to be that as far as laws go, it's county law that rules. I also notice that their website does not mention geocaching: http://www.thewoodlandsassociations.org/parks-rec/?page=73 Swanlakers
  3. Well, this no vacation cache rule does make one thing certain, it forces caches to be near the cachers. The rule pretty well ends the possibility of very remote caches. While I can not personally hunt the remote caches, I feel that something important in the game is lost when there are no more "wild caches" Swanlakers
  4. Would folks have a problem if this event was sponsored by Garmin (or Magellan?) The way I see it, this is exactly the kind of sponsorship we want, that is, approved by TPTB.(via Playtime) It uses gps, it looks like it might be fun. It sounds kind of like a road rally, and is probably well organized. Lets wait untill after the event and see what it was like before trashing it. by the way, since I live in Tulsa there is NO Way I can attend (sniff) Swanlakers
  5. Just a note of caution for all you bright lite folks. These flash lights make alot of light, but they also make alot of HEAT. Be sure that they can't turn on in your luggage, they can and will set your clothes on fire if in a confined space. Swanlakers
  6. Folks, read the FAQ: http://www.flybuymatrix.com/FlyBuyMatrix/faq.htm Looks like a classic pyramid scheme, you get your stuff after others lower in the chain sign up. Swanlakers
  7. I have started a related thread: http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=4016058331&m=14460035 Swanlakers
  8. What I was thinking about was adding some sort of language to the general guidelines and FAQ's to indicate that the polite thing to do is to leave the cache box goodies in a better state than when you arrived. This can be expressed in short hand as: Trade Kindly, or Trade Up, or antyhing else that TPTB like. The long explanation would go somthing like: Take somthing, leave somthing nicer, leave the cache a better place for your visit. This kind of goes along with Cache in Trash Out. The goal is not to end up with mega dollar caches, (though any one who wants to place one like that here in Oklahoma has MY ok!)The goal is to try to stem the tide of slow decay of caches, make the sport more self sustaining. As more cachers start TNLN the primary pull for new cachers will fade. I fear that this will slow the introduction of new blood, vital for the sport to survive long term. Don't get me wrong, TNLN is fine with me, it is just that new folks and kids especially like to see those shiny objects in that box. That IS the hunt for them. Swanlakers
  9. In response to the many posts about trash in a cache, trading cheap items for quality items etc. I humbly propose that Trade UP be inserted into general cache instructions. For instance in the FAQ: http://www.geocaching.com/faq.asp the instructions would read: 1. Take something from the cache 2. Leave something nicer in the cache, Trade UP! 3. Write about it in the logbook Perhaps that might slow the decay of a cache. My flame suit is on, so if this has been talked out a thousand times you can let me know. Swanlakers

  11. Beatnik has a side hidden to us all Swanlakers
  12. If this is a relativly minor issue thread then here goes: How come the profile information for a member is different when I click on a members name in the forums vs when I click the members name on a cache log? Seems to me clicking the name should link to the same page for both. Swanlakers
  13. no need to delete, just place a micro or a multi instead. Swanlakers
  14. oops, never mind [This message was edited by Swanlakers on April 15, 2003 at 12:30 PM.]
  15. Gotta say no to microcaches. My presonal 2 cents: if the site requires a micro - then just make it a virtual instead Swanlakers
  16. OK, OK, I gotta vote too. drum roll please: April 25 2003
  17. for the archived Iraq cache try this link: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=35424 Swanlakers
  18. I urge all to take a look at the New Zealand forums. The folks in NZ seem to be working out their public lands policies using politeness and good will, and in public on the forum. Perhaps we Yankees could learn somthing from the Kiwis. The important posts mention "DOC" Swanlakers
  19. Today I placed the MOAF (Mother of all Floss) cache. Cache container: 55 gal drum Contents: 200lbs dental floss and a ticking alarm clock. I dindn't have any room left for the logbook though. Swanlakers
  20. I think that the C4 is a problem (unless the cache is under a bridge next to a military reservation) But what about rat poison? (or does it violate the food rule?) Swanlakers
  21. My numbers: 6 months for owner renewal, 60 days after no owner response the cache goes "dark"(or red note as the case may be) Swanlakers
  22. Seems to be running about even on: "Its the journey" vs "Its the destination" How about the stuff in the cache. Do really cool cache items make up for a plain vanilla cache location? Swanlakers
