  1. yes, that's exactly what i was tring to avoid-messing with the garmin maps. The topos i use come from the massGIS-they have incrdeibly detailed contour data (3 m intervals) which is great for hiking etc. The one good thing about mapsource is that you can switch from map to map and it keeps the same coordinates so you can sort of integrate the information in your mind by quickly flipping back and forth from one map to another.
  2. Mapsource is quite fast when it comes to loading maps-obviously because it usu loads the preview. But what would really help is if i could view multiple maps concurrently overlayed on top of each other-for example if i have topo east loaded and i have a custom map of more detailed contours - i can see BOTH on the gpsr but not on mapsource - can this behavior on mapsource be changed so it mimics what's going on in the gpsr?
  3. i tried mapsource- but it requires a lot of extra mouse clicks. plus you cant drag trackpoints around or even see them overlayed on a map. Trackmaker looks good though. tnx.
  4. I have a collection of overlapping tracks from various hikes in the same neck of the woods. I would like to combine the tracks and edit out redundancies so that i have a nice map of the trails in the woods when I am done. What is the best app to achieve this result? Tnx.
  5. i suppose this is somethingthat has to be done when cgpsmapper compiles the mp file. is cgpsmapper the ONLY garmin compiler out there?
  6. I am creating detailed topo maps whose contour lines i want to appear as yellow in my garmin gps 60 csx. The maps are shp files combined in global mapper, saved as mp files, and then converted to img files with GPS mapedit. However the contours are gray and not easily seen. Where in this process can i change the contour line color? Tnx. Stefan
  7. oziexplorer with > Mainland > Datum: NAD83 > Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic > Latitude 1: 41 deg 43 min > Latitude 2: 42 deg 41 min > Central Meridian: -71 deg 30 min > Origin Latitude: 41 deg 0 min > False Easting: 200,000 meters > False Northing: 750,000 meters >
  8. thank you for your kind replies. in fact the MASSGIS replied that projection data is not supplied with the .shp files: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The shapefiles that may be downloaded from the MassGIS site are referenced to the Mass. State Plane Mainland NAD83 Meters (FIPSZONE 2001) coordinate system. Unfortunately there are no .prj (projection files) in some of the downloads, so if you have to assign a spatial reference to them use the aforementioned state plane coordinate system. If you want them in Latitude/Longitude or UTM then you will need to project the data using your GIS software tools. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That reply wwas not exactly helpful. But I did get the thing to work from the following helpful info from the ozi users group: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > For the MassGIS data, when you did the import DRG, you should've > specified the projection and parameters as follows: > > Mainland > Datum: NAD83 > Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic > Latitude 1: 41 deg 43 min > Latitude 2: 42 deg 41 min > Central Meridian: -71 deg 30 min > Origin Latitude: 41 deg 0 min > False Easting: 200,000 meters > False Northing: 750,000 meters > > Island > Datum: NAD83 > Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic > Latitude 1: 41 deg 17 min > Latitude 2: 41 deg 29 min > Central Meridian: -70 deg 30 min (minus sign means west) > Origin Latitude: 41 deg 0 min > False Easting: 500,000 meters > False Northing: 0 meters > So that's what I am doing. For this newbie, the problem is solved. I am particulary amazed that KE7AYF joined in 2003 and I rated one of his (her) 7 posts!
  9. i downloaded some excellent 3 meter contours for some areas i like to hike/bike. i am having a little problem viewing the esri .shp files. when i import them into my software, i assign the utm 19 zone (needed for the proper georeferencing) but the latitude is wrong (it puts the map at 8deg N which is zone 19P instead of 19T) Can you recommend a way that i can import the esri shape files so i can convert them to polish format which is the commonly used format for making garmin maps? I use these apps currently: http://www.cgpsmapper.com/en/main.htm http://www.geopainting.com/en/ but am willing to do whatever it takes to get hese topos into my garmin. yes i know about the tutorials and the dem2topo application but i dont need to make the contours-they are already available from the MassGIS. i just need to know what to do with the .shp file to get it into a .mp file format. tnx.
  10. Using mapsource topo from garmin, i can upload A TON of maps to the 60 csx. It's nice that they are contiguous but sometimes i dont want to view the topo but something else on the gps (north america metroguide or perhaps one of my custom maps) To do this I have to deselect the checkbox for EACH AND EVERY topo map that i want to disable. for new england that can be dozens of little checkboxes i have to scroll through and uncheck. iis there a way to consolidate the maps on the gps into sets so i can disable a set with one click? or perhaps can i consolidate the img files on the pc into one file so when i upload that to the gps it can be disabled / enabled quickly?
  11. please forgive my density, but is there a tutorial on the best way to do this?
