  1. Maybe just keep an eye on it for a while. We have an island cache near us with no finds yet........unfortunately we found it on our list after we had put our boat away for the season.........but i bet you can figure out where our first find of spring will be....... 2. I don't know how old you are, but assume you're under 16 since you mentioned your dad. Most important thing would be to let someone know where you'll be all the time. A fanny pack loaded with trades, flashlight, small first aid kit, bug spray, cell phone........umm those are pretty much the essentials for a beginner. Also, most caches are only slightly off the trail, so try to stick to trails as much as possible. You don't want to get lost out there. And you might consider not going by yourself......it's best to have a friend with you. Ok, I'm done playing the motherly role. Most of all.......have a blast!! 3. I think he's seducing us with his new avatar.......look into his eyes and try to figure out what he's thinking......... Perhaps he's thinking......Hey baby, guess what color underwear I'm wearing. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners. 4. We have the Garmin V........we're somewhat happy with it, however it seems my brother gets more accuracy with his Magellan.......Either that, or he's better at this game than we are............nah that isn't it. My guess is you'll find similar accuracies with both the V and the L. Ours averages an accuracy of 30-40 feet on a good day. But that changes as you walk around. We usually end up walking back and forth and around in circles until it brings us to the same spot more than once. Out of the 34 that we've found, it's brought us to within 1 foot of the cache maybe 5 times. We've found that you have to be moving to get good readings. As soon as you stop, it points you in the opposite direction. But as many have said.....we wouldn't want our GPS to bring us right to the cache as that would eliminate the hunting part....that's the fun part. Best of luck on your new addiction! 5. I could help, but need more information......a poem would be kinda fun. I don't live anywhere near your area so it wouldn't ruin it for me. If you'd like to email me privately, I could see what I can come up with....... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  6. I've made logs that say 'great place for a Cache In Trash Out event'..........or also challenged next visitors to trash out one grocery bag full......if 5 or 6 cachers did that, the park would be sparkling clean..........The parks that I've suggested trashing out would be totally awsome finds if not for all the trash.......When my husband and i go caching, we take bags with us. Hubby picks up aluminum cans and I pick up trash. It's almost a challenge now to see if we can fill up both bags before getting back to the car. 7. I can think of lots of reasons not to advertise. One reason is the expense to the website. Here's an example to explain my thinking..... My husband works for an airline, new owner of the company came in, set up lots of new contracts, purchased lots of airplanes, hired lots of employees.......people quit flying....airline stuck with too many planes, too much overhead, too many employees.....bankruptcy soon followed. Like someone else already mentioned......folks would sign up, play it for a month, then there'd be a big drop off. There's alot to be said for growing at a slower pace....... Also.....and I don't want to sound greedy here, but I don't want to have to stand in line to log a cache. And, while I don't think that geocaching damages the environment too much now, I do believe that if you get too many people all at once, it may do some damage. I have seen some caches where trails have been worn into ground making it somewhat obvious where they are.......i think with alot more people, one wont need a GPS anymore to find them.......... Thats my $1.57.....worth about .02cents in todays economy. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  8. Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. We'll be checking them out soon. We also noticed that the 'Mission Impossible' cache is back......so we'll be putting on our spy glasses and hitting that one as well. Thanks again! 9. We are inundated enough with commercialism. It's only a matter of time before the dentist bill will come to you with a Nike swoosh on the corner of the paper. It's insane! We don't mind having to go into a cafe for a clue if the cafe doesn't expect us to purchase anything. But I don't want to end up at a hardware store or a mall every time I go caching. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  10. If you change the name of the cache to 'breaktime', it'll definitely make it an easy find. As soon as you drive down the street, you'll see the name. If the cache has a different name, you at least have to use the GPS somewhat to find it. It would be like naming a normal cache '20 paces SW from parking space no.2' My newbie vote is to leave the name, change the hint......... Unless the new owners would like to make a donation to Geocache.com for advertising purposes. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  11. We found our first cache on 10/13/02. When we did our 100 mile radius search then, we came up with 358 caches. Today, i come up with 437. So caches are being hidden every day. This growth has also taken place near my sister in the thumb of Michigan. The numbers of how many are registered on this site is interesting, but I believe there are many more that are not registered and don't log their finds..........party poopers!!!! We've met 2 groups of cachers out on the trails and both groups were not registered and did not log their finds......... I think alot of folks are still very leary about the internet and do not want to give any information whether it be fact or fiction about themselves. One statistic I would REALLY like to know is.....after this holiday season, I'd like to know how much the sale of GPSrs have increased from last year to this. I have the feeling GPSr's are on many Christmas lists this year........ Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  12. Hi folks! My brother and his family are coming down to visit us here in the Prescott, WI area. While we were up visiting him in Brainerd, he took us to some really cool caches. So we want to return the favor. We're looking for caches that range from regular to somewhat difficult. Caches with awsome views or really creative hides. In other words......are there any caches in the Mpls/St. Paul area that you couldn't wait to get home and tell someone about? I appreciate the help. I look on the map and get overwhelmed with the number of caches available and it's difficult to tell which ones are must see's.......... Thanks! 13. My son just had a birthday and informed me that he would like to go to Galyans this afternoon to spend his birthday money...........wish me luck!! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  14. My husband visited Oregon a couple of weeks ago.......there's a million of them around the Portland/Salem area. Also from hanging out in the forums, it sounds like California is bursting with them. GO WEST YOUNG MAN! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  15. So does the word ARCHIVE alert someone to the log, or is there some poor guy stuck at his computer all day every day reading every single log that gets posted? Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  16. How about the first time running into another geocacher out on the trails........The first ones we ran into were very friendly and we chatted for a little bit........We ran into another one on the same day at a different cache that didn't seem to want to socialize much. The hardest part is working up the nerve to ask them if they're geocachers and hope they don't say "no what is geocaching?" Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  17. We have a love hate relationship with Galyans as well. We joke around that if we walk out of Galyans with a total lower than $100, then we weren't trying hard enough. Sounds to me like Husqui missed the shoe department all together........... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  18. I believe Target just put out an ad in the Thanksgiving sales for a yellow Garmin E-trex for $89. They also had the Garmin Venture for $139. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  19. It causes great conflict in our marriage..........we argue over who is going to drive and who is going to navigate. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  20. I discovered Geocache.com when I was doing a search on Google for GPS's. My husband wanted me to figure out which was the best one to buy. Now that I think about it, I don't even know why he wanted to buy one......... Anyway, i thought it sounded like a blast cause we like getting out for hikes every now and again anyway. So I found the website.........didn't do anything about it, never bought a GPS. Then a year later, my brother bought a GPS while he was visiting us. He wanted to play with his new purchase so I told him about Geocache.com. We all went out using his GPS and found our first cache. Hooked to the core! On our way home from our first find, we bought our own GPS.......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  21. We're a family of 5 who enjoy geocaching because it doesn't cost a lot of money. We're not low income by any means, but we can't afford to put 5-10 dollar items in every cache either. We usually leave a goecache magnet that we make and sometimes we leave a wooden goecache keychain that we also make. If we really like the cache, we'll leave something else worth more in addition to the magnet. I think everyone's idea of treasure may be different. We all know that caches deplete over a period of time.....it's a given. I think if the cache owner doesn't want this to happen, they should make it a members only and make a note that you only want people that will trade 5-10 dollar items. That should keep the riff-raff out. For those of you trying to figure out who left the geo-trash by going to your cache after each log..........Many people that play this game don't log. In fact I'm willing to bet that a majority of them don't log. I've met a couple of them out in the trenches. We are in the planning stage of our first hide. We've already decided that we will have to go replenish the cache once a month or so........we know that some folks will leave junk that we don't care for, but i guess we're in the hide for the gift factor.......as long as people enjoy the hide.........we're happy! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  22. Perhaps you could make it like one of those drawing puzzles you see in puzzle books......where you draw exactly what's in a box on graph paper and when you're done you have a complete picture. The body cache gives coords to the legs.....in each leg, you have one graph box that they need to draw into their own graph....when they've completed all of the legs, they have to coordinates to the spiders lair?...... I think it would be a fun twist. I like caches that even though they're simple, take a little more initiative........ Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  23. I guess if I were walking through the woods (pre-caching days), I would think any footsteps leading off into the woods would be someone sneaking off to relieve themselves......and I'm certainly not going to go check it out to see what they were doing there. Of course now, any trail we see, whether it be a walking trail or a deer trail it most certainly has a cache hidden at the end of it Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  24. didn't get to read any posts or see any pictures...........Dang it! I leave this darn forum for 2 seconds and I miss all the excitement! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  25. Even if we got rid of all the yellow jackets, there's about 100 other species waiting to take their place. Last year while hiking with a nephew, he stepped off trail about 3 feet, accidentally kicked a log, and was attacked by a bunch of black wasps....very scary!! Here's a little secret for ya. A few years back, we bought a product called "After Bite" for bee stings and mosquito bites. Paid like $4.00 for this silly little tube. Whenever I used it, it smelled really familiar, but I could't place the scent for some reason. Then one day I got a clue and looked at the ingredients. It was ammonia.........plain old household ammonia. So now I carry a small bottle of what used to be ear drops....i refilled it with household ammonia. Works great! It does sting for a second when you put it on , but it sure stops the itch......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
