  1. Being a "girly" myself, I felt the need to reply to you........... My husband and I have used "Walmart" bikes forever......until this year. It doesn't hurt to visit a bike shop.........I would visit more than one. You'll need to be sized to your bike....Short torso, long legs? Long torso, short legs? For basic riding on paved or easy trails, you won't need all the fancy shocks etc. Do you want a womans bike or a mans bike? (I got a mans bike, they just look better) Another thing to consider is the weight of a bike. Will it be easy for you to lift up onto a rack? Walmart is starting to carry lightweight bikes, but not like the bike shops do........... We just bought ours a month ago. We ended up going with the Specialized name. They make nice bikes anywhere from $300 on up. I got the $400 model and my husband got the $600 Rockhopper. I can tell you from riding around on the new ones, it makes a WORLD of difference when you're going up a hill. You'd be amazed how much easier it is to get up a hill with a lightweight bike......... Good luck! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  2. I have to admit, the toe is one of my favorites, but the dancing banana makes me laugh every time I see it. I agree with the changing of the avatars......Just when I think I've gotten to know someone, they put on a new face. 3. You still may be able to place it......... It all depends on what kind of camp it is. If its a day camp, they tend to keep the kids so busy with activities that they don't have time to wonder off in the woods. If its a summer camp..........well, they tend to keep the kids busy there too. Plus, many Boy Scout Troops are getting into geocaching........they tend to be very respectful, kind, courteous, obedient.....etc. etc. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  4. quote: i feel that somehow this thread attempts to make the opinions of veterans more valued than other people's opinions. I guess I didn't consider that. It just looked to me like everyone was getting to know each other a little deeper than "what do you carry while caching" quote:no matter whether you intent is to politicize a thread, it's been done from inception. I also don't see any politics going on.... They were all government employees true, but no one is say.......comparing which branch of the service is the best.......That just doesn't happen amongst military personnel. he he he! quote: i'd appreciate it if we kept our topics more to our common points, rather than what divides us. Okay okay........So what do you guys carry when you're geocaching? quote:i'm playing games here. i'm singing and dancing and laughing and playing pranks, and by golly, that's important work. That IS important work!! Carry on soldier! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  5. The male half of the Geo-Johnsons team served in the USAF from 1982-1986 in tropical Grand Forks, North Dakota. B-52 maintenance. The female half of the Geo-Johnson's team served from 84-86 as a dependant. As far as differences from those that served and those that didn't. At this stage in our lives, there is no difference. But I do remember when we returned home after his discharge, and it seemed all of our friends were still rather immature and irresponsible. Obviously they've grown up now, but I think service people tend to grow up alot faster. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  6. Hey! I have a Geko! Maybe you and I are members of the elite Geko owners club? As far as GPSs go, it seems to me like everyone is out using their own thing. There's a lot of yellow Etrex's out there and there's lot of Vistas. I don't think the Vistas are getting anyone closer to the cache than the Yellow is........ I've also noticed that people tend to think their GPS is the best, no matter what brand they have. I ignore folks that badmouth the Geko. It hasn't been out long enough for some folks to pass judgement. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  7. "I heard there were a bunch of guys hanging out in the bushes in this park.........I'm gonna hide it here anyway. You cover me!!" Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  8. I was 17 in 83. I would have been sitting in the woods with BrianSnat...........sounds like we had the same interests back then. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  9. I'll give my opinion, since no one asked for it. I think if commercial caches were introduced, we would soon become bombarded with low quality caches located at every business around. It would be a free form of advertising. I don't want to search for a cache outside the front window of an insurance office. Nor do I want to end up visiting every Burger King that a geocacher works at. I don't want to visit any plumbing companies, dentists offices or grocery stores. By living in the US, we're already inundated with advertising. There's ads in movies, sporting events, vehicles and buses driving around. When you sit in the restrooms at a restaurant, you get and eye level look at all the pretty ads while you do your business. I don't want to open a cache and find a stack of 50 cents off coupons at the local McDonalds. I get so upset every New Years when the news programs show beautiful fireworks behind Big Ben or the amphitheater in Australia and all the other countries.....only to go back to the US scenes in Times Square where there are no pretty fireworks......only a thousand flashing commercial ads. It's discusting!! Whew! I feel so much better......I'll climb off my Lever2000 for the best parts of your life soap box now. Thank you! 10. Ok........in defense of cwoper, I hadn't realized that OH, IN, KT, IL, MO were on the east coast......but maybe it's just my map. I think it's pretty cool what he did! I feel no need to drag him down........because I havn't done it. YOU are DA MAN!!! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  11. quote: 1. How did you find out/start geocaching? 2. Who/what got you started geocaching? 3. How often you do it? 4. How long have you been doing it? 5. Spending amounts: a. Price of GPS b. Placing a cache c. other equipment and prices (lights, ropes, etc) 1...I originally found out about Geocaching when my husband wanted to buy a GPS. I don't even know why he wanted one. Because it was a "gadget" I'm sure. So he asked me to do some research on the internet about GPSr's. When I did the search, Google gave me the geocaching website. I read a little bit of it and thought..........ooooh that sounds sooo cool!! So I told my husband about it......and then he didn't buy one. Just lost interest I guess. 6 months later, my brother comes down to visit for the weekend and shows us his new GPS. He wanted to play with it, but didn't know what to do. I remembered Geocaching from 6 months ago, so i went on their site and looked up a cache. We all loaded up into the van and did our first cache. HOOKED!!! On the way home, we stopped and bought our own GPS. he he he! 2....See #1 3....We go geocaching at least once a week if we can. 4....Since October 2002 5....Our first GPS was a Garmin Etrex Venture i think we paid $169 for it. Second one we just got recently is the Geko 201 for $119. The first cigarette lighter adapter we bought was $36 (ouch)retail. The second one I just got on ebay for $9.95. Then add in the expense of Fanny packs and all the horns and whistles that go along with hiking in the woods.......... Good luck on your report!! 12. Old Geocachers never die, they just pass a way........point. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  13. I didn't want to leave the impression that we do 8 all the time. This was an exception. It's a 1 hour drive to Menomonie, so we wanted to get them all in one shot. We did get lucky in that none of them were more than 1/2 mile from the parking lot. That definitely makes a difference. I think our total hike for the the day was 4 miles. There have been other times we've gone out with a list of 5 to do and only complete 2-3. I love it when my muscles are sore the next day. That means I had a great work out AND had a great time. Any other exercise would fall under the Un-fun category. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  14. Congratulations! Glad to hear she liked it. We took a full day this weekend and did all of the caches in Menomonie Wisconsin..... 8 total. It was a great day!! It was so good to get out of the house on such a beautiful day. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  15. We havnt used EasyGPS yet. We pick out all of our caches........enter all the coords at LostOutdoors.com then we get a satelite photo of where they're all located etc. It helps us figure out what order we want to do them all......and gives a cool photo too. Once you've got the coords entered, you click on the button to download them to your GPS. You will need the cable for your PC though..... You didn't say which Etrex you have...I don't believe the yellow etrex is capable of downloading is it? 16. Where's your enthusiasm? he he he! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  17. I got an email through geocache.com this morning from user mike_2233. It says...... quote:Hello, you seem to know alot about all this .. so can I ask you a question: >From an IP address at home, can someone if they wanted to , use that address to locate EXACTLY where a computer is?? Is that possible to do from the IP address? Thanks for any info you can share with me on this Mike Here's my questions...... 1. I don't know didly squat about IP addresses, why would he ask me? 2. Why would he want to know EXACTLY where a computer is? 3. What does this have to do with Geocaching? 4. Is this something I need to worry about? Its entirely possible that this guy is just curious about something, but I have never posted anything that would leave anyone to believe that I know anything about computers.........He has no finds, nor has he made any posts in the forums.... What do you think? Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  18. We recently purchased indoor house paint in the new plastic jugs. Once we've used all the paint, we can clean out the jug, cut the inside pouring lip off and it'll make an awsome cache......Now we just have to paint a room....... 19. Hang in there! Tell your family to hang in there too! My husband just quit the first of the year. It took him 8 weeks before his mood started getting better. He was complaining about anything and everything. We all finally just started saying "Whatever Mr. Grouchy!" he he he! DONT use your family as an excuse to start up again. IE: "These kids make me so mad I need a cigarette!" Just remember that you're looking for an excuse........so try to recognize when you're making them......... Don't forget to reward yourself. After all, you are saving a ton of money! My husband did the math, and after one month, he had saved enough to go out and by himself a new Specialized mountain bike.........So he did just that. Best of luck to you!! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  20. I think it's a sign of the times, but on a much smaller scale than what you're speaking of...........We all have spring fever! My husband and I are about to kill each other. We get like this every year about this time. We are sooooo ready to get out of this house/prison. Alas! It's going to be in the 50's tomorrow and Saturday..............I'm OUTTA here!!! As a side note..........I'm not a Monopoly player either. I always end up playing with someone that buys up all the properties, takes all my money and rubs my nose in it. AGH!! Anyone for a game of Sorry? he he he! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  21. Hi Jason! Welcome to our addiction! Why wait until spring? Get your boots on and hit the trails! Have fun!! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  22. I got my Geko 201 last week. I think its the perfect unit for geocaching. The 201 has some bells and whistles, but not as many as the Venture. The Venture is now my husbands toy......it's just too complicated for me to wrap my mind around. Or maybe it's just that I don't think I have the time to sit down and figure it all out.........ya! That's it! Anyway, the Geko 201 will get you there, get you back, make routes etc. It doesn't have the maps like the Venture, but we don't use that anyway....Another difference is the Geko gives you less space to name waypoints. The Venture has like 8-10 spaces for a name and the Geko only gives you 6 spaces. This is something I can live with. The 201 takes the same cable as all the other Garmins, so I can still download caches/waypoints. and also uses the same Garmin AC adapter. The games on the 201 are not the sit on your butt games.......you need a big open space outside to play. I'm very happy with the Geko......it's tiny and lightweight. For backpackers obsessed with weight, it would be perfect. The cheapest I found the Gekos were at GPSCity.com. The 201 is $119 and their 101 is $89. Adapters can be found on ebay for $9.99 Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  23. I'm laying claim on April 21st. I would have picked the 20th, but Maleki beat me to it. Justifications? I think everyone is waiting for warm weather to stash their cache......and because it seems that Monday morning is the day most of our new caches show up........ Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  24. Sorry, wanted to look these up yesterday, but the website was down. If you feel like traveling, try the Blair Witch Project-Coffin Rock cache. And if that doesn't scare you, try Blair Witch Project-Parr House. I understand the camping in this area is fabulous! so don't forget to bring your tent..........oh and 2 copies of the map. he he he! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  25. Go for it! We have a cache in our area thats near a bridge they'll be building in the next couple of years. When I logged it, i suggested people put progress photos when they find it........but the actual contstruction of the bridge wont start for another year or so. Here it is.....Wakota View The cache is actually set up on a walking path that goes along the river, so the cache is about 1/2 mile away from the bridge, but you have to park at the bridge to do the trail. Perhaps if you could find a park with a view of the bridge, you could have a traditional cache. Otherwise, i dont have a problem with a virtual caches. I think it would be fun to follow the progress of the bridge...... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
