  1. I have found one Army Corp. marker which was in the data base that we use. Go to the geochaching main page and follow the link for benchmark hunting. e.g. quote: New! Benchmark huntingYou can now search for NGS Benchmarks in the US. search for the markers that are of interest to you. Good luck and good hunting!
  2. Thank you Kewaneh & Shark. That may be what I found -- based on your description. I only have a photo of the end that is at the pavement surface. It does look like a gear almost 1 inch in diameter -- the shaft is not visible. Looks like a central divot also. I can not see what silly thing that I am doing wrong with those photos! When I paste the URL into my browser "Address" window -- it come up fine -- but as a link -- no work!!. I may keep beating that dead horse from time to time
  3. I tried a GOOGLE search on DMATC-GSS and got a couple of Univ. of Arkansas references: web page web page2 [This message was edited by happycycler on March 08, 2003 at 04:38 PM.]
  4. Thanx Dusty Sorry folks. The following look like links -- BUT they do not work -- to view the photos, copy the text and paste into your browser. Much more trouble than it si worth. The following text will allow one to copy & paste it into their browser window! http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Shores/4924/Cotton_Planter_Spindle8.jpg http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Shores/4924/pipe_spindle.jpg I cound not get the IMG nor the URL 9tags) to work. I am doing something wrong here -- something stupid. [This message was edited by happycycler on March 08, 2003 at 08:08 PM.] [This message was edited by happycycler on March 08, 2003 at 08:14 PM.]
  5. I guess that those URLs are too long & complicated. I will try another plan....
  6. Is this a COTTON PICKER SPINDLE? This one was not associatd with any benchmark from the database but was maybe associated with a pipe that sticks out of the Mississippi River floodwall. I noticed it today while bicycling along the Riverfront Trail. I have seen references to COTTON PICKER SPINDLE in the database though. Another view: My first try at getting images from my Yahoo Briefcase to this forum....
  7. Thank you gnbrotz -- that is much clearer photo and it does not appear so eroded as the only one that I found.
  8. I LIKE IT! Nice job on the page Dusty. Does anyone have a decent photo of a copper pin in concrete or stone? I found one JC0100 but my photos are very poor.
  9. THANK YOU FOLKS! Special thanx to embra for the link. We bought a Magellian Meridian Gold and Mapsend Topo just after the first of this year. It sounds like we qualify for the $50 rebate. I mailed it off today -- now I just need 8 weeks of patience. I am enjoying the Topo maps and am happy with the number of streets shown. Glad that I just ordered the Topo -- it seems good for my use.
  10. A web page sounds great to me -- so long as you are willing to do the work! Also maybe just a link to your page from somewhere .... edited due to fat fingers!
  11. We just found this cache last weekend Busiek Cache -- an old rural cemetary. Wife has not yet done our log though. Interesting old stones. We made up a lot of imaginary history for the area. (Do decode the hint also!) Some of the comments in the logbook by folks visiting family graves were very positive.
  12. Here in Missouri (Mark Twain National Forest) Mapsend Topo has some Forest service roads with numbers -- they call them county road 2345, etc. though.
  13. Ah Hah! Carbondale (SIU-C) is only about one or two day's bicycle ride away -- maybe when the weather warms up some.... Thank you surveytech! I do appreciate what you (along with many others!) bring to the forum.
  14. Thank you both for the information. I learned something today -- now I just need to retain it! OK so now my plan is to find more universities! Unfortunately the St. Louis universities do not seem to have any benchmarks in the database.
  15. Last weekend I foundGG0638 on the Univ. of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. What did I find? Is it used differently than other benchmarks? BTW within a few square yards there are a altitude benchmark, a HARN disk, a triangulation disk and this magnetic disk. The North and South towers of the Old Main building are also listed as benchmarks. How many other places have such a high density of benchmarks?
  16. IV_warrier, I think that Radio Shack has a "splitter" that allows 2 devices to be attached to 1 cig. lighter. Probably others exist also.
  17. I believe that you need to load all the maps at one time. Anything that you load will erase what you had on the card. I have selected 4 areas that will use the 32MB on my 32MB card & loaded all of them at one time. That worked for me.
  18. Start a local GeoCaching club in your area? I know that there are local organizations of Geocachers in some areas.
  19. Our first GPS is a Brunton MNS. It does the job for Geocaching & benchmark hunting. Our Brunton did develop a problem but it was replaced quickly when we contacted them. I have also gotten good service with several beginner's type questions via e-mail from the Brunton company. I don't really see that Brunton has any great advantages and I feel that you might do just as well with another brand which cost less money. I also got the wife a Magellan Meridian Gold. I enjoy playing with the " lettle " maps. (The Brunton does not have maps, as I am sure that you know.)
  20. Today I found three 1935 benchmarks. I know that these do not compare with what you folks have found -- but I am excited to have found some that have weathered about 68 years.JC0100 was the most interesting
  21. On the Topozone page there is a check-box below the map for target symbol. Have you looked to see if it has a check mark? That happened to me once.
  22. EasyGPS has options to "Send" (From your PC to your GPS) OR "Receive" (from your GPS to your PC). This saves typing (& typos). The EasyGPS / GPS interface will translate from degrees and decimal minutes (38 33.456) to decimal degrees (38.5576) during the transfer. This assumes that you have your GPS set to display degrees and decimal minutes. Of course you can always convert manually 1 degree = 60 minutes and 1 minute = 60 sec.
  23. I don't know when / IF I will ever find 100 caches (18 now) but my mentor (rogbarn) wants to take me out for a benchmark marathon for us to each get 100. He has 90 but I am sitting at 77. rogbarn even has (designation) SL-100 picked out for our 100th one.
