  1. Is it possible to make a list of caches I’ve found, but are now archived?
  2. Finally, someone who gets it!!! I mean really, what would you rather have your local police officers doing -- worrying about a missing geocache, or chasing down murderers, rapists, and child molesters? Actually, I would be upset if it did take away from an officer chasing down murderers, rapists and child molesters, but most police departments have "community" officers and this is exactly their job! They don't chase down the afore mentioned undesirables. They solve neighborhood and personal issues.
  3. The important part some of you are missing is that it was placed on private land with permission from the landowner and the cache was taken by a known person who has, until now, refused to return it. The trespassing charge would likely not fly except for the argument that the person was not involved in the sport of "geocaching" and therefore was trespassing with intent to do harm because they did not have the implied permission from the landowner to be on the land. It would depend on your judge if it would fly, but if I had to file papers I would include it with the other charges knowing it would likely be thrown out - and you would need the landowner has a co-plaintiff. However, knowing that a specific individual or individuals has the object makes it very easy to proceed with a stolen goods charge. Particularly since the ownership is documented on a website - I'm assuming for a period of time. Another way to approach this might be through the media. Know a report that likes a challenge? They could write an article on geocaching and interview the thief on their take.......
  4. File a stolen property report with the local police for the cache location and indicate who has/who removed the cache plus any contact information you may have. If the police will follow up, great! They usually will - maybe not in a fast time period, but they will get around to knocking on the door. If not, mail a copy of the report or at least the police report number to the thieves and specifically request the return of the cache and all its contents including the travel bugs (I would likely do this anyway as notice that you have taken the first step of filing for a civil claim whether or not you intend to follow up). Good luck!
  5. I agree with some of the above responses, if I ran across it - especially after hiking in the woods, I would likely laugh and then go find a stick to test it with! Love the idea, but then we have man eating bushes here in Arizona (thorns) so we're used to risking our lives when making grabs.
  6. Hear, Hear! I totally agree. Spent the morning caching and while the new map was great for size - really hard to determine which cache was which - even though I had tried to print out the listed caches on the side - but it overlapped on the map.
  7. On my system, that empty space is where the coords are suppose to be! I usually end up having to write them in. Never could figure out why sometimes it printed and other times not. If the clue is a long one, I usually decrypt it....... Thanks for the "ah ha!" moment!
  8. Good luck on your class! Sure miss caching in the cooler northwest.... 1. How did you first hear about geocaching? Magazine article about letterboxing. It referenced geocaching.com and since there were no letterboxes in our neighborhood, we went looking for a cache! 2. Tell me about your first cache? Took the whole family including geodog Sammy up to the county fairgrounds in Flagstaff and tried to find it. Eventually, hubby found the first stage of a multi in a stump and then we were hooked! 3. Have you had any bad/scary experiences caching? Snakes! You know the scene - the cache has to be in a dark "cave" but you don't want to be the one to stick your hand in there! And occasionally the random thought of "why exactly are we crawling around these boulders that have a 1000 foot drop on the side??!" 4. What is the #1 reason you geocache? To discover new places and it's an excellent way to get the kids to hike without having to hear "are we there yet?" every 2 minutes. 5. Do you prefer to hunt or hide? Gotta say hunt since we don't have any hides yet. Working on it though! 6. What was your favorite cache place? Why? A disabled cache now, but it was called Kelly Canyon Cache - absolutely gorgeous slot canyon area near our house. We had no idea it was there - nothing listed in the hiking books either. We keep coming back to check on the cache and redo the hike - love it! The cache was in a cliff face and was muggled. I volunteered to replace it, but the owner never said ok and it got archived. 7. What was your worst cache? Why? DNFs! Actually, there's an urban cache near the house that I can't find. Have looked several times and even asked for a clue. Now it may be missing. Hate to write it off as a "could have been....." 8. Have you ever attened a cache event? Yep! They are a blast! 9. Tell me your best caching story? There are too many to tell - great areas to discover, family time, animal sightings, just the drives to some of the cache areas are amazing. Everyone should try it!
