  1. how do i check firmware version? I actually sorted it via plug in cable but doesn;t solve "geocaching live" method
  2. Any suggestions please? Having the same problem mentioned above == no additional (child) waypoints are downloading. I have tried downloading via cable and gclive None of the above suggestions help. Have checked for updates to device.
  3. Sorry but not following what you mean.I click on search filters - no relevant filters appear (ie same filters as walrus appear)---nothing at all relevant to mystery
  4. Well if I click on crack the case - 0/2 investigate the scene -- all I get is a local map full of my own caches
  5. Apologies for delay in replying ( I don';t seem to notified when there is an update in this forum and don't check regularly) I bought Panasonic BQ CC55. am really chuffed with it 1) told me some of my batteries just needed dumping 2) I can clearly see how much an individual battery has charged (any one out of four) and don't need to worry abut overcharging. In spite of clever charger, I am still disappointed in battery usage of gpsmap 66s ( and I am using brand new eneloop batteries)
  6. Finally bought an "intelligent" charger -- brilliant - it really lets me know to what degree batteries are charged, turns itself off when done (individually for any one of 4 batteries) and also tells me if they should just be dumped as past it
  7. I tend to maintain my own caches regularly -- simply because they are very local and easy to maintain. Out in field I will add a dry log if necessary to another COs cache or even replace -- but if I need to replace because the container wont hold another log -- I will keep the original and contact CO -- so far COs contacted have simply said "ditch the log" but I believe I must give hem the choice, I would want to be offered
  8. Must admit I am finding this discussion fascinating -- I have come from an etrex 20 to the 66s and frankly am totally confused. Downloaded the manual which I found useless. While it is great that there are experienced technical folk out there willing to help a) I feel Garmin should get their act together and provide a decent user manual b) it is good that there are many folk on this forum willing to help - but reading the posts above I suspect some of you don't realise how hard this is for those of us who are of perfectly normal, average or above intelligence but simply don't have the experience or knowledge of garmin and similar thought processes (ie we really haven;'t the foggiest idea what half the vocab means or what the menu selections are supposed to do or not do)
  9. thanks for reply but I am afraid I don't really understand it
  10. one of reasons I chose this device was the buttons - touch screens not good in extreme weather conditions . Most keys on 66s are good but I find the on/off power key a pain in the neck -- I need to take gloves off to use it -- which sort of defeats the object of buying this model. Also my last device died through the switches getting worn out ( after almost 10 years!) - I worry that over frequent and unnecessary use of power key will shorten life of this one. That is main reason why I want the screen on pretty well all the time -- I would be looking a the screen at least once per minute so don't want to have to remove gloves (in winter) to turn on/ off
  11. Thanks Mike D - updating firmware - done that - yes there was an update but now tells me I have latest - no difference. Backlight -I felt I needed it but will try 30 secs . Planning to have another play tomorrow . Charger -- maybe further down the line - have overspent already on device (and on new batteries and talky toaster maps) so for now will use a duracell charger which eneloop say is OK Have you ever used the Birds eye imagery "in the field"? I want to do this (for archaeology not for geocaching) but think it will use more battery power
  12. Just bought a Garmin gpsmap66s and wish I hadn't bothered. I was happy enough with etrex 20 till the rubber on the buttons disintegrated. Anyway - can anyone advise -- 1) the 66s keeps turning itself off for no apparent reason 2) It seems to eat batteries - I only got it on Friday (it is now Monday) and haven't seriously used it yet - just trying to set it up and understand it -- but have gone through 4 sets of batteries - on my fifth. 4/5 sets were good quality alkaline. The fifth set (just now re-charging) are brand new panasonic eneloop rechargeables ( and yes I did ensure they were fully charged before use). Have followed advice from other online sources and turned off wifi and blue tooth etc. But then I think what is the point of spending money to get a device with all these fancy attributes if then it becomes unusable in the field because the batteries don't last 2 minutes?
  13. Good question - I have managed to register mine but it was not straightforward -- I did it after reading other posts in various forums and watching a youtube video - none of which I made notes on so I can;t tell you how I did it. One thing I did find is that the instructions to go to geo.co/garmin were not helpful but someone posted a link that worked for (once your device gives you the activation code) https://www.geocaching.com/play/garmin/register
  14. I have the app on android phone and android tablet so it should be ok on two phones
  15. Not sure whether such ads are allowed.. if not I am sure admin will delete. My cachemobile (aka 2 berth campervan with trackable sticker and 2nd TB currently racing around the world competing with campervan) is for sale. Anyone interested in Romahome C15 reg 2001, 2 berth campervan - please pm me for more details.
  16. Incredible - I am replying to a 10 year old post!! I wondered if there was a way of seeing "who is watching my cache?".. well apparently there isn't. I can add another reason to the list of "why would you watch a cache", I watch several caches geographically near to me because I know the owners live miles and miles away or just no longer cache -- I like the idea of these caches being available for tourists and visitors - I don't want the permanent responsibility of owning them, but I more or less surreptitiously maintain rather a lot of caches. I watch..... in case a "needs maintenance" sign comes up. So there you are.. another reason - but in this case I suspect some of the COs no longer cache or just don't care - so they won't be worried who is watching.
  17. that's pretty generous of you. I have often returned to caches to drop a tb...when I've had them too long and couldn't find a new cache big enough
  18. Have often used other people's lists ...made pqs occasionally...never bothered to rate them..I will in future
  19. Today is international earthcache day. Please can anyone answer a question a few cachers have been discussing. Suppose I find an earthcache and answer the questions but am away from home and no internet access. I send email to CO - say a week later, get a response eventually and Log the cache as found today. Would I still get the souvenir? Or suppose I send the email immediately but the CO is on holiday/sick whatever and doesn't reply for a few weeks. Evenutally I get to log the cache as found on the right day but the logging is taking place 3-4 weeks late. Do I still get the souvenir? In other words -- is there a time limit for claiming sounvenirs?
  20. can't justify spending more money ?
  21. Sting in the tale for this series is that although they are listed as letter box hybrids - none (at least none I've looked at) are at the listed co-ordinates so you have to figure out a puzzle to get the co-ordinates for each and every cache BEFORE you worry about the bonus cache - that is where the problem arises - you have 25 caches which are not at the listed co-ordinates but you cannot correct the co-ordinates before downloading from geocaching.com because they are described as letter box hybrids - where the co-ordinates cannot be corrected -- not too many logs to read just yet so little has been revealed. Phone reception generally poor in the Highlands of Scotland but that is a problem I will worry about later!! B.
  22. oh well, then I just have to find out if the location warrants manually changing 25 co-ords. wou!d be ok if I didn't cache alone.. could list corrected points as waypoints on one gpsr and someone else could have description and clue if needed....but when not on my own am accompanied by muggles without gprs or suitable phones..who only come with me under sufferance anyway?
