  1. Ask permission. I haven't hunted one on a military base, but I have had 3 different landowners accompany me as I looked, and we had great discussions about many topics while I was there. I've yet to be denied permission, but I've yet to be asked to supper either. What's the worst scenario if you ask permission? They'd say no. I'll bet that wouldn't hold true if you didn't ask. Now the ones that I'm concerned with are the ones on railroad ROWs. I have several of those that would be easy finds, and I'd only be on RR property for 30 seconds. They are all on active single track mainlines and I know how to interpret the signals to know if there are trains in the vicinity. I also am capable of listening to their radio traffic. However, even if I did know who to call, I'm certain they would categorically reject my request. [This message was edited by kd4adc on April 03, 2003 at 12:50 PM.]
  2. What's under it? Well, the obvious answer is a concrete post. If you mean what's between the disc and the concrete post, I don't know. The disc is attached to the post like all other BMs.
  3. Yes, I knew it wasn't what I was looking for. I posted it as a not found, but here's what I did find. It's in the middle of a yard in front of an old frame house. The setting is very rural and nothing appears to have changed in a very long time except the ROW and the road. The real mark is supposed to be in a rock outcropping in the ROW but it's all dirt. I spoke to the older lady at the house about searching for the mark and she pointed out the one in the picture. She said that she had wondered for years and years what that thing was. From the looks of the concrete post, it's quite old. The marker itself is metal, but has nothing stamped on it, just the hole in the center. 4. Click here. The post is about 4" by 4" and the disc is a bit smaller than normal BMs.
  5. Thanks for the links, I should have searched first. Quite interesting indeed.
  6. "HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 2 METERS" I've seen this phrase in several descriptions, usually triangulation stations. What does it mean?
  7. I had the same situation this last weekend. I think I found it, but I couldn't get the PVC cap off with my hands. EE2067 I think that's it, but I logged it as a not found. I did find a disk not in the database nearby, so I documented it there as well. Comments welcome.
  8. A while back, we were all looking with anticipation on reaching the 10,000 found mark. 15,000 and 20,000 have been mentioned. Do the church steeples and standpipe tanks not count in these totals? Here's my opinion: If it has a PID and you find it, log it.
  9. Xterra. '02 Molten Lava XE V6 Used to have a Jeep Scrambler. A glorified Jeep, the Xterra is not.
  10. They have to be coached. They're logging the wrong marks as found.
  11. Got my eTrex Legend about 3 weeks ago from amazon.com for $199 and free shipping, with the $50 rebate, I'll have $149 in it. Comes with the $40 PC cable, so that drops it below the price of a Yellow at Wal-Mart. Can't beat it. I'd do it again.

I am sure that one of these card companies causes more impact than all the off path geocachers combined. BUT I have the payback. Take their 'postage will be paid by business' envelope from within their mailbox boxel movement and stuff all of the non-identifying material back into it, while your at it go to the recycle bin in the postoffice and grab all the heavy paper you can find and not only make it the heaviest envelope possible but also oversized thereby causing the postage due to skyrocket. I don't remove the identifying material. I use a sharpie to write NO across the area where you sign, and send it ALL back to them. quote: I would like to complain about this whole daylights saving thing. We should STAY on DST. 14. Thanks BDT. Your suggestion does work on the 'Find nearby' link and allows you to see the placenames in page format. However, the portion of the geocache page I was referring to is the download option, for use with EasyGPS. I wasn't clear enough in my explanation. I want the same little checkbox for placename downloads on the benchmark pages. I like to dump these placenames into my GPSr and see them on the map. I can do this for geocaches, but not for benchmarks. In my area, as in most I suspect, benchmarks are more plentiful than geocaches.
  15. On individual geocache pages, we can download placenames near the geocache. I can find no such option for the benchmarks. Am I missing it, or is that feature unavailable? If unavailable, is there any interest in having this capability added? I want my placenames.
  16. Since you said near railroads, I'm assuming that they're talking about the rail itself. Previous references to sectional rail that I've seen are either 30 feet or 33 feet. Most railroad mainlines are welded 'ribbon' rail now. However, some sidings are still sectional, so you could measure those, notwithstanding the trespassing issue.
