  1. Try contacting Papa Bear_Left. He is active in the WA community, as well as in our New Zealand forums at www.gps.org.nz
  2. I have a Martiini Adventurer, which I bought from the factory nearly 20 years ago. Google Martiini in Finland for an interesting story and history. My partner at the time bought a purse knife from another factory in Romenevi which was hand forged iron in a birchwood sheath - a true work of art. If anyone who appreciates excellent workmanship in cutlery is reading this, mark Finnish Lapland for a visit.
  3. Look forward to seeing you over here. Take a look at the www.gps.org forums, which is where you will find most locals lurking. Send me a PM when you hit Wellington and I'll be happy to show you around.
  4. Hi There There are free maps that will do the job. Come and visit us at www.gps.org.nz You will get heaps of helpful tips and advice, not to mention a warm welcome when you get here. Cheers
  5. I'm a recent Panasonic convert too, having bought a FZ8 last year. The Leica optics are great and this camera does everything I need and more. I still haven't worked out what all the functions do. Regarding stability, I carry a Leki walking pole with a camera mount on it. Kills 2 birds with one stone and very lightweight.
  6. PS... We've already been warned not to call our style of "geobag" by the typical American term in public... LOL Back in 1990 I toured the country with a team from Disneyland. They included Mickey, Minnie, Donald & Goofy, plus some support staff. They were using the common American term you speak of and you should have seen the look on their faces when I told them what it meant here They were absolutely horrified at what they had unwittingly been referring to, as it would have been most un-Disney.
  7. As OP I would appreciate it if Keystone's advice is heeded. I would prefer this thread to to remain where it is. Sorry if I was unclear about my intentions. Thanks Skytracker
  8. I was recently reading through some local logs and was reminded of the text on the plaque at the Ataturk Memorial, which was quoted in the log. It really got me thinking and I thought that I'd like to share it. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was the founder of modern Turkey and the associations between New Zealand, Australia and Turkey go back to the Galipoli campaign of WW1, when thousands of ANZACs lost their lives. This was Ataturk's message: "Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives.. you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours.. You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now living in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well" I don't think I have ever come across a more moving text. Does anyone else have others to share? Thanks to Shine Kelly for reminding me of this. Edited for stupid typo.

  11. I see someone else has come across Original Leslie. This is surely the most interesting I have seen. Placed it in its current location a couple of weeks ago.
  12. I visited this one recently. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...2e-a326b9ed043b Definitely the oldest in this part of the world and still going strong.
  13. You could try contacting the webmaster of the site where you found the information.
  14. A baby shower...thank God for that! I thought that we were all invited to the birth! Was about to ask if the Mom to be knew about it.
  15. This is perfectly acceptable and even necessary here. We have a lot of regional parks that are also working farms. Access is open for most of the year, but they get closed for about 2 months during lambing. One such cache is GC80E3, which re-lists this weekend. These parks are great outdoors resources and I think that it would be a great shame not to be able to place caches in them because of a seasonal closure.
  16. Hi Snail Trailing I had a look at Metlink and it gives the ferry timetables. If you use this link http://www.metlink.org.nz/timetables.php?route=EBF in the description it is sure to pass because the information comes from the GWRC/Metlink site and not from the ferry operator's.
  17. I don't believe that this is true. The ferry service, although run by a private operator, is part of our regional transport system and is subsidised by the local authority. Publishing these details is no more promotion that publishing a local bus timetable. We are strongly encouraged to use public transport here and the ferry service is a part of that network.
  18. Hi Snail Trailing Looks like you are going for the first cache on Matiu. Good on ya! Edited for stupid spelling error.
  19. Why, was the cache in your bank manager's office?
  20. Congratulations on winning the rugby
  21. No part of almost anything was intended as a hiding place for a geocache.
  22. I tend to agree in principle with the OP. Here in New Zealand we have no such restrictions and railway tracks are often fenced. Different cultures also have different attitudes and I believe that in some cases an attitude that may prevail in the US but not in another country can be irrelevant. That said, I do recognise that this site and of course the technology we use is provided entirely from the US and I believe that gives the owners some right to make the rules.
  23. A friend of mine owns the company that makes the stroller featured in this article: http://www.crocodilebaby.com/qs/page/2283/2282/17 We build things like this pretty tough down here.
  24. I'm getting the same problem. Looks like the server is having a bad hair day.
