  1. His name is Tim, he is from Napanee, Ontario Sorry, think his name is , or is it Steve?
  2. "Save as default" when editing a cache page doesn't stick. Each time I edit a listing I have to check both of these boxes. One other thing, the box for editing the short description of a listing only allows me to display three lines of text at a time. WinXP with Firefox 4.0.1. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
  3. Add me to the list of those who don't like the fixed width. Text on My Last 30 Logs is now broken into multiple lines and words are split in inappropriate places. WinXP with FireFox 4.01
  4. The Pinnacles - a 5/5 Earthcache in Sarawak. The hike is 2.4 km long and the ascent is over 1,000 m. The view is simply stunning when you get to the top.
  5. I ventured over to another site when it first came out a few months ago but was put off by what I considered at the time to be a beta-level, not-yet-ready-for-primetime-website. First impressions can mean a lot and the one I was left with was very weak. While the GS site has room to improve, I'm content with the fact that TPTB are trying to improve it.
  6. You might also try asking over in the exploristGC forums.
  7. Groundspeak already sells an app for the iPhone and Android applications - the GS website pretty much provides what any cacher needs to get started so I'm not sure why you want to reinvent the wheel. There are also a variety of virtual awards available, e.g. BadgeGen (developed by one of our local cachers) and there are world leader list available as well. I'd suggest that instead of taking the route you are going, start a monthly geocaching club to see if there are folks who are interested. Post a note in the Region/State or Country forum you live in asking if such a group already exists or start a group via a social networking site. Just my 2 cents worth.
  8. Still interest? for sure. I picked up a letterbox, one of the multis I DNFd on Family Day and a traditional for good measure. All of that on Good Friday while out for a walk with my uncle. Good work. How many more days to go?
  9. As per the Knowledge Book guidelines "Contents are family-friendly. Explosives, fireworks, ammunition, lighters, knives (including pocket knives and multi-tools), drugs, alcohol and any illicit material should not be placed in a cache. <snip>If someone other than you places an inappropriate item in a geocache that you own, the cache may be temporarily disabled." I would equate matches to lighters as they are both a source of ignition. Perhaps bring this to the attention of the CO so they don't place matches in any more of their caches or bring it to the attention of the reviewer who published the listing.
  10. Not sure if you want to save the information from the site or transfer it to your GPS. If you purchase a premium membership then you can create pocket queries and load them into any of a number of different programs, e.g. GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) or Magellan's Vantage Point software. If you're asking how to transfer a .loc or .gpx file to your GPS, sorry to say, but the eXplorist 100 doesn't have a means to connect to a PC so you'll have to manually enter the co-ordinates into it.
  11. I thought you spent most of your time bailing. Your reply is not worthy of a reply. Dagnabbit, I just replied, didn't I?
  12. Very excited about the new canoe route feature especially with the portages. Based on my past experience, I've been known to spend more time looking for the portage than I spend actually paddling!
  13. Please avoid glass containers. Should they break, and eventually they will, and a finder cut themself you will definitely hear about it. Aside from that, falling tree limbs, falling rocks, etc. add to their shortened lifespan.
  14. Be sure you have checked the box that says, "The descriptions below are in HTML"
  15. 1) Has anyone posted a Needs Maintenance on it yet? 2) If so, have you checked to see if the CO has been on-line over the last three months? If the answers to both questions are yes, then post a Should be Archived as that will get the owner's attention if they log in. If they don't log in, chances are they will be given a one month grace period before it gets archived.
  16. entogeek is kinda lame - but I kinda like it. After all, just outside my office is a room filled with over 1 million insects and arachnids.
  17. Looks like a good group of fellow EC enthusiasts will be coming from the Greater Toronto Area - at least if I have anything to say about it.
  18. Shouldn't be a problem. I have an Earthcache where there is a virtual a few metres away as well as another one with the stage of multi within steps of it.
  19. This message is to the OP. May I suggest (and feel free to ignore my suggestion) that you take a deep breath, sit back a moment and exhale. I see that this was to be your second cache and no doubt you are filled with anticipation and excitement waiting to see it published. BTW, in the interest of full disclosure, I was part of the FTF group on your first hide - we tend to travel in a pack as geocaching is very much a social activity. We were all moved by your story and pleased to share in on the find. The first time I published a cache it was not accepted because I stated in my description that it was in a mailbox - caches cannot be located on Canada Post property. Being a newcomer I was quite disheartened - after all I was so excited waiting for my first cache to be published and it was denied. I wrote back to the reviewer and explained that it was an old rusty abandoned mailbox on a utility pole presumably for a house that existed decades ago but is no longer there. A simple response to the reviewer's request and my cache was published a few days later. Fast forward a couple of years and 80 some odd hides later and that sense of anticipation is still there each and every time I wait to see if my new hide will be published. There have been hiccups along the way, and even an appeal to Groundspeak which was denied, but each reviewer demonstrated the utmost in professionalism. That's something to consider when you realize that they are volunteers who give freely of their time. I'm sure if you work with your reviewer, that you can get your cache published.
  20. PB jars vs Lock 'n Locks: The Debate Need to completely eliminate smell of food from PB Jar vs not necessary with a new Lock 'n Lock Tabs can break off Lock 'n Locks vs no tabs on PB Jars Silicone gasket on Lock 'n Lock lid provides a good seal vs no gasket but deep lip on PBJ lid provides a good seal Different sizes of Lock 'n Locks vs different sizes of PB jars and finally $4.99 for an empty Lock 'n Lock vs $4.99 for 1 kg of yummy PB
  21. I just signed up to host my first event. I've got the place (H. Abode is bringing the grill), we'll be doing it potluck style. I'm going to try and get some caches set up (temporary ones) and I'm now just waiting for people to post notes and say if they'll be there. I"m super nervous that no one will show up, but I know that at least a few folks will show up. Might want to check the guidelines as temporary caches are not allowed. You'll be surprised at how many people will attend an event as cachers like to socialize and swap stories. Good luck with your event!
  22. As per the guidelines the purpose of an event cannot be simply to go caching. Having a hot dog roast, telling scary stories around a bonfire (in an approved location of course) followed by a night hike would be an acceptable event - of course if a geocache lures you into the woods while you're on your hike...
  23. Find the cache, sign the log = a find. Even if you find a cache by accident.
  24. Those who have expressed concerns about this looking like a b0mb have a point. While some cachers might not see the resemblance, it's not what we think it looks like that matters, it's the opinion of those who don't know what a geocache is that matters. A possible solution is to place your ammo can into another container that is clearly labelled with a geocaching sticker and hide it as far away as you can from any urban area - the type of area that only geocachers would be venturing into.
