  1. Agreed. This is why I immediately place any caches I own and have any inkling may need maintenance on a bookmark list created just for this. Considering that non-PM cachers can't have bookmark lists, it would be nice to have some universal means to remind a cache owner of their responsibilities. I commend you for your diligence in maintaining your cache(s)! One cache I just found has a pretty absentee CO (hasn't logged in to GC.com since 3/2012) and it has 2 NM's on it that were not acted on. I felt really bad to log it as a NA, but the poor cache was in a pretty bad shape.
  2. Absolutely. I've seen a quote along the lines of "Geocaching: the game where YOU are the search engine" that says pretty much the same thing. All the device does is get you to ground zero, where you can start searching. It's still up to you to find the cache. And along that line, Geocaching, getting techies off the computer when women cant. LOL but my favorite geocaching line I hear or saw was "Geocaching, using million dollar satellites to find Tupperware in the woods." ^^^^  ^^^^^ "Tupperware in the woods!" CLASSIC!
  3. This is exactly the problem I have. The last cache I found was in such a deplorable condition (no lid, logs exposed to elements and faded beyond readability, no TB's or trinkets) that I felt compelled to act. I sent the CO an email, but when I checked his profile, he last checked in GC(dot)com in March of 2012. There's 2 NMs that were listed in 2012 & 2013, and a lot of the find logs state exactly what I have said... "not much of a cache left". I sent an email to the reviewer who published it and he replied and said to NA it and wait a bit. I offered to adopt it because it's such a great location and it's a shame the OC let it fall to disrepair (we get a lot of tourist GC'ers), but he said to go through the "abandonment" process first. I have no problem with that. FYI: I'm very new to GC'ing and I love the sport already. It gets me out of my office (all day sit-down desk job) and into the woods and fresh air and strolling along trails and paths.
  4. SUCCESS!!!!! Took niraD's advice to heart and went geocaching after work today. Used my Smartphone to within 10 meters of GZ, then used my eyes... Two for Two today! Christmas in August!!! Lessons Learned: 1. The Smartphone GPS isn't weird. It's just doing its job within parameters. 2. The most important tool in GC'ing isn't the GPS... it's the EYES! Gracias, muito obrigado, mahalo, arigato, doh-zhee, salamat po, THANK YOU, niraD!!! :-) UC3B
  5. Aloha, floydhays! Should we leave a message for the developer to check the app... and maybe cook up a patch for it? Happy Caching! UC3B
  6. I don't mind logging a DNF. I'm pretty secure as a person to say "I tried, but didn't find it". Gives me more impetus to return to the site and go over what I missed the first time. Remember, Indiana Jones didn't find everything he looked for the first time. That's why his log book was so blasted FAT!
  7. Hope nobody bans Ammo cans and starts using... (gasp)... Pressure Cookers. C'mon folks... we're here to have fun. Lighten up a little. (And while I am fully aware that humor & sarcasm can be lost in some folks... I offer this disclaimer... Sorry If I Offended You. Was Just Making A Point The Best Way I Could.) UC3B
  8. Aloha, Fastphil! You and I are probably the newest newbies in geocaching.... I just started this past Friday, and yes, went 0-2, but only because I was trying to find micros... waaaay outta my league (and yours, too, if you don't mind me saying so!) Anyhow, Happy 'Caching and hope to hear of your finds in the near future! Aloha! UC3B
  9. Aloha, Heli Leo! Well, to be honest, I've been using the c-Geo app from the Google Store, mostly because A: it's Free! and B: it had the highest stars of the free apps. And my experience with the app is the same as yours... one moment I'm like within 2 meters... then I'm like 15-20 meters, and in a totally different direction! I make sure I have the maximum amount of satellites and the differential (±) is within 4 meters. And since I'm a volunteer Community Emergency Response Team member, I don't mind plunking down cash for a GPSr as I will use it in my Search and Rescue (SAR) missions as well. Much mahalo! (Thanks) for sharing! UC3B
  10. Thanks so very much for your GREAT advice, niraD! I hadn't realized that I was looking for tiny stuff! I will try again, seeking out the larger caches. Much aloha! UC3B
  11. Aloha, everybody! Just came back from my second geocaching mission and came up empty again. I noticed that the GPS on my Samsung Transform Ultra is really crazy... I gave it time to stabilize before going out and then it gave me like 4 different readings, and ended up with a search area about 50 meters across. Am I doing something wrong, or is my Cellphone "off"? BTW, I'm getting ready to just take the plunge and get a GPSr before my next geocachepedition.
