  1. I was caching on Friday in Caledon and put my GPS down to let it settle(magnetic micro on an old rail car). The GPS settled at 0m, which NEVER happens. The cache was less than 6 inches away.
  2. Waypoint: %smart%con1 Description: %dif1a%ter1a%hint Instead of using the geocaching feature on my Garmin, I colour code the icons with navaids intead... green= traditional amber= multi white= letterbox Information sign= mystery blue= solved puzzle coords etc. same idea for child waypoints... parking sign etc. Then I delete after I've found them, and mark as found in PDA for logging. Easier to view than 1000 treasure boxes.
  3. I believe the cache page states that events and CITO's are exempt from that rule.
  4. Got my count wrong last night, I have 26 to go, not 22 as I thought. But I knocked 2 off my list today (2.5/4.5 and 4/3.5) both on the way home from work. It also made me do a cache that was on my closest to home list that I had been ignoring. I have 2 more planned for Sat., both puzzles that I finally sat down and figured out! I love this idea for a cache, it will occupy my mind and body for most of the summer for sure! 24 to go........
  5. I have 22 left to go... didn't think I'd actually be that close. Mostly 4/5 combos. Has anyone ever seen a 1/4.5?? I think some puzzle caches would have 4/1.5 etc. But I can't solve those!
  6. When I started caching I went solo all the time( my first 1100 finds), no one was interested in going with me. I did a lot of hiking alone in the woods which for a female is not without its risks. I really never felt odd about urban caching in parks and such since I may have looked like I was a mother searching for a wayward child... Now that I have friends,(caching friends) they do not like me to cache alone in the woods so I always have someone to go with now. After caching alone then with others, I definately prefer group caching. I cache alot on weekdays by myself in safer urban settings, then in urban/woodsy places on weekends in a group.
  7. Almost nothing... I've cached on crutches with a bum knee-- ditched the crutches, hopped over a snowbank on one leg, hung onto the tree while hopping up a small hill to get a grab n' go after my doctor's appointment. I cache every Friday night with friends and am often driving over 100km to get home at 3 am Sat. morning. I have to drive about an hour from home to get anywhere to cache now, and between doing that and driving to and from work(200km per day) I put over $500 of gas per month in the Jeep. I went out in a snowstorm last Sunday with 80km winds, with a windchill of -30 C and found 12 caches.
  8. I wear Merrell hiking shoes and boots, both waterproof. I have had painful bone spurs for 10 years and my feet stopped hurting when I put on my first pair--no orthotics needed! My snow boots are Columbia... slightly less comfy and stiffer, but totally waterproof and very warm. I tend to wear the hiking boots in the snow anyway, unless it is very deep.

    My Account page

Finally! I thought it was my dial up, my CPU, my connections... But it gave me time to play with my GSAK macros that I never get time to fiddle with.
  10. I would like to see "bulk delete"(remove) option for the watchlist. I usually have a long list of caches on my watchlist, and often want to delete several at a time (to stop all the unwanted emails they produce after I am finished watching them). I have dial up and it takes forever to remove them one at a time. I end up having to do a few every day until I have removed the ones I want. How about adding boxes next to each cache on the list, so they can just be checked and removed in one go. (similar to bookmark lists)
  11. Ya, wondering why B&B would put out 14 caches in the winter, with snow on the ground, and then make the final NOT winter friendly. We couldn't even find it with Crystal on the phone to us at the cache site. I went back and found it right after the cache was moved, I can see the spot where it was... probably packed down from cachers making a geotrail right on top of it.
  12. Other than praying for the snow to melt, I run a PQ each week of caches found in the last week. If someone else has found it, I will too, especially if they have left a nice trail right to the cache. I don't always trust the "winter friendly" icon. I have attempted some caches with these, only to find myself digging in and around rocks half way up a steep hillside. But 1/1's are usually a sure bet to be winter friendly, unless of course, the plow has completely covered the lamp post skirt you need to lift.
  13. I used an eXplorist 400 for about a year but hated the mapping capability(or lack thereof), so I switched to a Garmin GPSMap 60C. It is discontinued now, but I got a refurbished unit off Ebay for about $160(shipping incl.) It's more than adequate for mapping needs.
  14. I thought we were the only ones... Bob, Earl(named a cache after that one) and a brand new one I have not yet named. My PDA is a Sony Clie... named CLEO.
  15. My best numbers day was when I found 31-solo. I was exhuasted. My best experience is any day I can hike a 5-10km loop and find 5 or 6 caches along the way. My usual weekend (one day)trip takes me at least 250km round trip and an average of 10-15 caches. I may have 0-5 DNF's as well. I call 'last cache' when I can barely see without a flashlight. I signed up for a 24hr cache marathon event, cache page clearly states that this event is NOT a numbers run. Last year the group of about 20 found about 50 caches, with a few of them being a 3.5/4 terrain rating. I am going because I don't get to cache with a group very often and I think it will be a blast, I'm especially looking forward to bumbling around in the dark in a large crowd without attracting the police!
  16. I don't know how many times I have been searching in the rocks and as I'm moving one it slips and lands on my other hand... the sad thing is I have also purposefully sacrificed my hand to save my GPS...
  17. I heard about geocaching from a friend I play softball with. She had just heard about it from her friend a few days before, and I looked up "geocashing" on the internet. It sounded right up my alley so I went out and bought an e-trex. I had 25 finds in about a week and a half when my friend asked me if I had looked it up. I told her how many I had found and she was shocked! She hadn't even gone out and bought a GPS yet, she was just going along with her friend on a few caches. Needless to say, I have over 1000 caches in just under one year, sold my e-trex to my friend and upgraded to an explorist 400 and PDA. She has now just found her 27th cache in 2 weeks( 6 of which I placed!)

    PDA'S

I bought a Sony Clie off Ebay, around $40 Cdn. and run cachemate on it. That's all I use it for(except my grocery list). I don't know how I ever survived without it. Pays for itself in 3 ink cartridges!
  19. I was thinking of getting a second battery too, I'll have to check them out on Ebay. I am also looking around for a car mount. Right now I'm using my XM satellite radio mount and an elastic! Is the suction cup mount as good as the other one?
  20. Silly me! Thanks for the info... As soon as I read your post I realized that the adaptor would connect to the data cord at the OTHER end(where it connects to the PC). I've got my cord connected to my PC at all times,(I just connect to the GPSr when I need to upload) so it's hiding behind my desk and I forgot about the connection hub on the cord. Thanks
  21. I just signed up for a 24 hour caching marathon event in a few weeks. I have the eXplorist 400 GPSr and a full battery runs for about 14 hrs, however I will be needing it for the better part of 24 hrs. So I looked for cigarette lighter power adaptor and found one model(seems the only model) that fits most of the explorist line. But I can't find a port that would connect it to the GPSr, the only connection port is the USB data port(it's the screw in/faceplate thingy). I was just wondering if this was indeed the right type of adaptor because I can't find any other place that this adaptor would attach to my GPS. My GPS runs on the Li Ion battery. This adaptor is listed on the Magellan accessories page on their website. Help would be appreciated.
  22. I've decided to do the 24 cache event. I've arranged to drive with flamejobgrrl. Should be fun!
  23. I solved the problem by changing the email address in my profile. Now the emails come through. Not sure why that works(same ISP) but it does, so I'm satisfied for now.
  24. I'm not sure it is due to the upgrades at gc.com because this has been going on for about 10 days now. I think it may be that the ISP has deemed them to be bulk spam. So now I have to figure out how to go about reversing that.
  25. Not that I really need more emails, but I do like to get the notifications when my caches are found, and the new cache publications. The problem is, I am not getting them any more. It's been around a week since I last got any email from gc.com, and I can't figure out why. I have not changed my profile, or email address in the profile, and I use a separate account just for gc.com. I sent them an email, and they responded-so my email is working, but it was full of tech talk(IP addresses and such-I am hoping for a short answer here) Any one know why this may be happening? and how to fix it? Thanks.
