  1. quote: I have the East and West on my hard drive about 1.2 megs I assume you mean 1.2 Gigs? Could someone please explain the procedure for accomplishing this task? I would like to get Metroguide (West only) onto the HD. I assume I need to do an un-install first on my exisitng program? What about Topo? (Western U.S. only) Can this bee done with it as well? Careful now....speak slowly...you are dealing with someone who is very dangerous at the helm of a computer!
  2. How much space does this consume on the HD to do this?
  3. As in JDM Cox? As in "This is your program" we are discussing? If so, awesome! I use it all the time and it was well worth the $20 I sent you. One of the most useful reference tools I have.
  4. Awesome program! I have been using it for at least a year now and it's great! Please send the designer of this program a few bucks (I sent $20) to re-pay him for all his hard work and constant updates. I am currently using this program to verify the coordinates of a database of waypoints of both manmade and natural features in Yellowstone National Park (over 1500 of them so far) I use various mapping programs to get the coordinates, then I input them on the above mentioned program and check to see that the feature I am looking for is really, truly there! It works awesome.
  5. I guess you mean an*implied*resolution of 0.1 ft., right? If you get a real resulution of better than 30 ft. your doing great!
  6. Well, I guess considering all the other "street Maps" you can download to your Garmin (none...) I guess it's the best available! Show me a map...any map...without mistakes. Remember, this whole GPS/digital map thing is still in it's infancy. I guess someday we'll look back at the crude technology we are using here and laugh, but for now, I still think it's magic! I have all (yes...all) the Garmin map series, and while they all have their shortcomings, I wouldn't own a GPS that wouldn't accept them! I use them constantly, and just like my own mind, sometimes they leave me wanting a little bit more. Maybe it's the whole "is the glass half full or half empty" thing going on, huh?
  7. I really like the aquatech lite! It easily holds enough gear for an extended river trip. I have never once had wet clothes using this bag, even though I have put it in the river more than once. My wife likes the purple color too!
  8. Depends on the return policy of the retailer where you purchased it. At our store, we won't return software that has been opened. This is why I strongly recommend to folks that are considering Garmin maps, that they first check them out closely on Garmin's online map viewer, so as to decide before purchase if the maps are suitable for their purposes. I'm not sure that the Magellan series will be any better. Good luck.
  9. I have a couple of GPS receivers I am selling and would like some input as to the best way to do it....I am considering e-bay, but is this is safe way? What should I watch out for there? They are both new, demonstration units, never used out side of the store, but I can't (I don't think)advertise them as "new", because I don't have all the boxes and such, 'cause they got lost at the store. Should I advertise them as "like new"?
  10. If you will be using mostly USGS Topo maps, then the UTM grids will be, by far, the easiest to learn and use! Here is a link to a pretty good article:Using UTM "The Alphawolf"
  11. quote: I had gone in a circle without realizing it and my stubborn insistence that I have a "good sense of direction" turned out to be wrong. I don't know if you have ever been a pilot or not, but the first thing you have to learn in instrument navigation (which is what GPS nav. is...)is to trust your instruments, not your instincts. Many a fine men have died in aircraft when they have chosen to ignore their instruments and go with what their senses are screaming at them. Usually a bad decision. "The Alphawolf"

  13. quote:I was up against a cliff today Not only were you only seeing half the sky, but you were experiencing a problem called "mutipathing" where the signals you were receiving were being "bounced" off the rock and confusing the receiver, causing further degredation of accuracy. Make sure and stay away from big vertical surfaces, like cliffs and buildings. "The Alphawolf"
  14. quote: but I like the idea of 3-4 millimeter accuracy.... Carrier Phase receivers typically provide 10-30 cm GPS position accuracy with differential correction. Carrier Phase receivers provide the higher level of accuracy demanded by certain GIS applications. Carrier Phase receivers measure the distance from the receiver to the satellites by counting the number of waves that carry the C/A Code signal. This method of determining position is much more accurate; however, it does require a substatially higher occupation time to attain 10-30 cm accuracy. Initializing a Carrier Phase GPS job on a known point requires an occupation time of about 5 minutes. Initializing a Carrier Phase GPS job on an unknown point requires an occupation time of about 30-40 minutes. Additional requirements, such as maintaining the same satellite constellation throughout the job, performance under canopy and the need to be very close to a base station, limit the applicability of Carrier Phase GPS receivers to many GIS applications. 16. You did it! My wolf is gone! Way to go! I sort of miss him already "The Alphawolf"

  18. Thanks, I'm giving it a try....Testing, testing, 1-2-3.... "The Alphawolf"
  19. Yes, I've noticed that too. But then, I can't make one of my wolves go away either! No matter what I try. I guess things happen in pairs on this page! Beats me....
  20. Yes, stay simple and stay cheap. The basic Etrex will serve you fine on the ocean. Bear in mind, no consumer grade unit will put you on a wreck with enough accuracy that you can count on dropping the anchor onto the wreck. You will have to narrow it down with some other means, such as compass bearings to land objects or visual sightings of the wreck. But hey...in those waters, if you are within 30 ft., you can hardly miss it, right?
  21. quote: This probably totally redundant.... but you did check the "no photo" box next to the photo...right? Yup...set at "no Photo" and "no avatar" and the signature box is blank! I guess these bad boys are here to stay!

  23. The wolves are going to be with me forever. They are my destiny. It's a good thing they are not a mating pair or I would start having puppy wolves all over this page. Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going out to buy an extra bag of dog food......
  24. This is a test. Only a test. Had this been a real posting, I would have said something amusing or informative. (Hope that pesky wolf is gone!)
  25. quote: is to go to your profile page and make sure you have not designated the wolf as your "picture" as well as your avatar. It's all blank but the avatar! I have logged off and back on and I can't think of what else to try! Guess I could delete the avatar also the log off and re-do the avatar pic. and see if that works.....
