  1. quote: Were the altitudes in sync while they were moving ? Or were they different only when standing still? The altitudes were different while moving and while stationary also. At times, the would be close, but then would spread apart again. I might add that WAAS was also disabled on both. Pretty intriguing huh?
  2. Just a curious observation: Yesterday, 2 Garmin V's, side by side on the dash of my car. Both with 2.08 firmware. The speeds are identical while moving. Down to the 1/10 mph. However, sitting still in my driveway, the altitudes varied from dead-together to about 100 ft. apart. Not that I care one bit, but it seemed curious. Same units, same firmware, same satellite signals, same time, same everything, different altitudes.(I know....get a life! You see I sell these things, so I can do stupid stuff like this!)
  3. quote:But how long does it take to download mapsourceto the V? HOURS!! I don't know where you got "hours" from, but it doesn't take "hours" to do 19 megs.I just start the download and go have some dinner. Your 176 C and my V have the same exact waterproof standards(IEC 529 IPX7)and by the way, if you are forced to try to operate your 176 "underwater", you are in deep trouble(no pun intended)! O.K....mine won't float, that is the main reason as I said above, that the 176 would be my first choice in a boat(but only a boat). I can download Bluechart maps to my V just like you can for maritime use, if I so choose. You can go to the stratosphere where memory is concerned with your 176C I am stuck at 19 megs. However, that being said, I will never be tempted to take out a second mortgage to buy a couple new memory cards! I still don't consider 19 megs. to be much of an impedment. Sure I would like more if I could have it, but I don't dislike my V because it doesn't. Now, let's go hiking together to find some caches! No......I won't help carry your 176C!!!

  5. quote:I am looking for any information on how to download maps etc from the net. You can't download maps from the net to put them on your Garmin. Any maps that the Garmin will accept must be from Garmin software.
  6. We must not falter in our beliefs! We know the truth! We must stand as dimes among nickles! They are more, they are bigger, they are not stronger! Together we stand, united we geocache! Go V's...Go V's...Go V's...

  8. quote:gps v is ancient to me WHAT!?!? Ancient? You've got to be kidding? Right? Let's see you do an "on the fly re-route" with yours! If you deviate from your downloaded route, (like say a traffic wreck detour, or say construction) you are on your own, right? A color screen?? What functionality does that provide? It certainly sucks the batteries faster.(a few hours on 4 batteries) A color screen doesn't make things one bit faster, more accurate or more useable. It's like having a color screen on my timex watch! Serves no purpose. Now, when the day comes I can snap digital pictures with my GPSR and then review them on my screen before dumping them to my computer, I would like a color screen(but one with a whole bunch more than 16 colors). And yes, I have used one....I own a SP III. It sits on the desk(anyone want to but it?) and never gets used since I bought my V a year ago. If I was using a GPSR in a boat, the 176 (not the C) would be my first choice. But only in a boat. Nowhere else. To leave a vehicle with one of those, you would need a wheelbarrow to carry it. O.k.....I'm done defending my "ancient" V now.....
  9. But I do love the Moon & Sun data! I like knowing when I need to start hiking to get to a spot to fish within 30 min. of sunrise, or knowing when sunset will be so I can be there and have my photography gear set up for some sunset shots in Canyonlands! The calendar and games are a total waste for me. I haven't been into them since my V was 2 hours old. And some of the custom fields in the trip computer are a total waste for me also. I mean come on...who really uses VMG?(and a lot of others in there) And one final note...Isn't it about time to offer a USB cord? I mean geeeez!
  10. I wish I could add a card for more memory in the built in digital camera! 36 pictures isn't enough!
  11. quote:get a Magellan Meridian Platinum, that will get you to the cache faster. How do you figure that?
  12. Yes you can delete maps from your Garmin. In MapSource, just don't select any maps and then select the "save to device" icon. It will initilaize, then warn you that saving an empty map set will erase all your existing maps. Select "ok" and let 'er rip! They'll all be gone.
  13. quote: So I therefore assume its my legal right to use the thing if I want. You don't have a "legal right" to use anything on a commercial flight that the flight crews asks you not to use! Not even the bathroom(just try using the restroom during a "don't leave your seats phase of your flight)! Assuming that you have a "legal right" to use your GPSR without permission will end up getting your flight diverted, with some unhappy folks wearing sunglasses waiting for you upon landing and your name on CNN that night!
  14. I actually taped my mouse antenna to the window using black electrcial tape in an "X" fashion. Worked perfectly on my E-Map (yes...this was prior to 9/11. Imagine trying this now!)
  15. I wonder about it's compatability with all the different mapping software programs around....

  17. quote: My latest info is moving the release date to December now I am curious....Where did you get this info? I am a dealer and can't get any info., and it's driving me nuts! I have about a 30 person waiting list for these so far. I am afraid that when Garmin finally releases them, they are going to divy them out with an eyedropper! They must really be having some problems with these to have missed the hunting seasons and a lot of the Christmas season, if this is true!
  18. quote: To give people a choice to get more range with having to get a HAM license Well, you don't need a HAM license, but you doneed to be licensed! Legally, the FCC says you need to purchase a license to operate GMRS. Now, that being said, I sell radios, lots of them, and I personally know of no-one who has jumped through these hoops in order to operate a 2-watt simplex, hand-held radio! If you were running a 200 watt base station, using the repeaters, then you bettr get the license! But with these small wattage hand-helds, I don't think the "radio-police" are going to notice you...
  19. quote: Note that Alaska would be included in continental. For his purpose(map DATUMS) Alaska has it's own....NAD27 ALASKA.
  20. You got it! Continental U.S.
  21. quote: You EXPORT the MapSource file as a .txt file and then this little program plots it. Pretty cool! How exactly do I export it as a text file into this program? I have the program, but can't figure out how to get the tracklogs from MapSource into this program.

  23. I would've voted for everything "except" the new release of City Select, but your poll wouldn't let me. I use them all at different times.
  24. I am currently receiving board postings from a couple of GPS related sites. I get an e-mail notice the day it happens(a release) Most of them don't apply to my model (Garmin V) so they just get deleted. That way, I get the update the day it is released, unless I am out of town or something.
  25. quote: I have the East and West on my hard drive about 1.2 megs I assume you mean 1.2 Gigs? Could someone please explain the procedure for accomplishing this task? I would like to get Metroguide (West only) onto the HD. I assume I need to do an un-install first on my exisitng program? What about Topo? (Western U.S. only) Can this bee done with it as well? Careful now....speak slowly...you are dealing with someone who is very dangerous at the helm of a computer!
