Rino 110/120 Unit USERS - Review(s), Q&A
Alphawolf replied to Cymbaline's topic in GPS technology and devices
quote: To have the capabilities of a higher-end standalone FRS unit, the Rino would be well into the $250-450 range. I respectfully disagree. Compare the 110 to the Garmin 72. The 72 meets or exceeds almost every spec. and I sell it for $159.00. That makes the radio part of the equation worth about $10. or so, and I stand on my opinion that $10.00 is about all it's worth. I can buy better quality radios for $20, almost anywhere. quote: Dunno what he was looking for for $170, but I wasn't "looking" for anything.....I was just "calling 'em as I see 'em" As I have mentioned before, I love the concept of the RINO.I am confident it will mature to the point where I might pay the money a buy a pair instead of borrowing them from the store "Never take a sunset for granted. quote:If running Windows ME you need an OS upgrade, as that's by far one of the worst OS's MS ever stumbled upon 'zactly where did you hear that? I am running Me, have been since it came out, and I love it. I have had 95, 98, 98se, and xp. Mellenium is great. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. Tough call.......personally, I wouldn't do it. I would put the extra money in and get, say, a Garmin 72, with a warranty to back it up for a year. The II+ probably isn't worth too much more than $89 used. If mapping is important to you, it will obviously cost you a bit more to get a mapping unit and software. Your right, the II+ was a good unit for it's day, but me thinks it's time to retire it...... "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. The Garmin 72 is a sweet entry-level GPSR! I keep WAAS disabled anyway. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

quote:The buttons are ABOVE the display? Yes! Thank goodness! It drives me nuts that Magellan puts the buttons on top. If you hold something in your hand, your thumb is UP! Not down. Why would they put the buttons down? I am a human engineering freak. I admit it. But I want things to be ergonomic, and my thumb is up, not down! With the buttons down, I have to cross over the display with my thumb, or use 2 hands. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

You can load them both, but you can only view one or the other. It will default to MG, but you can "de-select" it to view TOPO. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

The clock is set by the signal from the satellites, (which are all synchronized) and can not be stopped, only adjusted for local time off-sets. The "stop navigation" option is to cancel an active "go-to" or route you are currently navigating. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. Rino 110/120 Unit USERS - Review(s), Q&A
Alphawolf replied to Cymbaline's topic in GPS technology and devices
I am optimistic the RINO's will evolve into great units. I imagine Garmin will fix the issues as they are made aware of them and a fix is engineered. They have awesome potential. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last" -
Garmin 72's. Mapping isn't something you need for your purposes. This thing is all that you require, and relatively cheap. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

Well, you are comparing a $200 dollar GPS (after rebate) to a $500 GPS. Hardly equal. Obviously, if the Legend will fill your needs, get it and save a bunch of money. The Legend (and any other GPS made) will allow you to enter Lat. Long. coordinates as a waypoint then "GOTO" Also, they will all let you mark a waypoint and save it in Lat. Long. format. Sorry, but I believe it is time to let it go It's old and we need to make room on this world for the young, new models. Remember, it's not dead, it's just going to a better place. A place where the signals are always strong, and the caches are always found right where they should be. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. regarding downloading TOPO! maps into gps
Alphawolf replied to evergreenhiker!'s topic in GPS technology and devices
Nope. Garmin mapping units will only accept Garmin maps and Magellan mapping units will only accept Magellan maps. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last" -
Just dropped in to say Happy Holidays to you all. This is a great resource we have going here. I have learned much and hopefully taught a little. Some great topics and debates here, with increased knowledge always being the bottom line. May your worst day of 2003 be better than the best day you had in 2002!(hope that came across right) Alphawolf out. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. They do a great job keeping us from getting lost, but when will they come up with one that will keep itself from getting lost? "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

Must be in the new firmware version, huh? I haven't even tried the old games yet and I've had my V for better than a year now. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

Things that make you go hmmmmmm.....?
Alphawolf replied to Clown Knife's topic in GPS technology and devices
We sell both. Hundreds and hundreds of GPSRs in a years time. Garmin is outselling Magellan by a huge margin. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last" -
An aluminum "telescoping" golf ball retriever, lashed to my pack frame with the antenna mounted to the top of it. Fully extended, it will go up about 15 feet! Jusssssst kidding I don't use an external and haven't ever seen the need for one, especially with the quad antennas. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

"Pluggung In" simply saves batteries. It won't charge them (rechargeables), or hurt any other type. It just turns them off and saves them. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

ooops. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

It looks thinner than the T-trex. I hope it has a quad antenna. Specs! I want specs.! "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

The One Smart GPS Company...
Alphawolf replied to creagerstonefamily's topic in GPS technology and devices
quote: My overall goal is an amount between $500 and $700 dollars. You will have a neat unit if you can deliver. I'm afraid though, that when it comes to folks laying this much money down, that it will only be people with a business need. The average geocacher can isn't going to do it. There are a few who can afford it, but being in GPS sales for 5 years has taught me that the average consumer is looking for a spot between $95.00 and $250.00. It's hard to even push the Garmin Vista or V or 76S because of the price point. I'm not saying there isn't a market, I just don't think it's a geocaching market. More of a tech. industry market. If you are talking about using the 7.5 min. series, there just isn't enough memory in any unit to enable that. I'm not sure of the exact conversion, but in my simple mind, I belive it would be at least 4 times the data in any single map to enable the quads. That would limit you to a very small geographic region even with a 128 mb card. If you stay with the 1:100,000 scale, I'm not sure you gain anything, no matter who authors the maps. quote: Are you the one? Well, that is where I work, but I really hated that thing, so I can't imaging talking you into buying one! In fact, they (Brunton) make several things I am not crazy about. But I do like their compasses!(not the electronic variety) "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last" -
Isn't CES in Vegas this January? I'll bet this is when Garmin releases the new models for the consumers. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"

Metroguide over City Select -- am I the only one?
Alphawolf replied to jollybgood's topic in GPS technology and devices
It all comes down to the size of the city. Large metropolitan areas....City Select. Smaller cities and rural areas.....Metroguide. In fact, in rurual areas, City Select is useless. "Never take a sunset for granted. Stop what you are doing and enjoy it. You never know when it may be your last"
