  1. I think the unit will recognize the files that come from the same product and lump them all together as far as enabling/disabling is concerned. If however you have different products like city navigator and topo west you would then be able to enable or disable those separately.
  2. Also you might wish to make a backup of the files on the unit if you have not already done so. Also also there is theOregon Wiki
  3. I cannot explain about your card reader/computer is not recognizing the card. As stated earlier both mapsource and basecamp/map install place the maps in the "garmin" folder, there is no separate "map" or "maps" subfolder. If you use mapsource, after you have selected what maps you wish to send to the unit and have clicked "send to device" you should get the dialogue with the big "find device" button, below that button should be a drop down menu with your "oregon 450" and one or more "removable media (drive letter here:\), if the card is being read properly by the Oregon it should be one of those, select it. transfer maps. This also applies if you open map install on it's own. If you use basecamp then you find your SD drive letter under "devices" on the upper left somewhere, right click on the drive letter of your SD card and select "install maps to memory card whatever your drive letter is". Rename the file by opening the garmin folder in a file explorer, find gmapsupp.img right click it and select "rename" and rename it to something descriptive, IE WashingtonStreet.img, you must keep the .img part. You can then use mapsource/basecamp to install another map and rename it say, WashingtonTOPO.img. Then in your profile on the Oregon you can select which maps are used. I keep my GPX files and my maps on the SD card because a few times my Oregon forgot that the GPX files where there, it didn't display the caches and it would not reload the files! With the GPX files on the card you can pop out the batteries and the SD card, put the batteries back in, restart the unit (wait for it to fully load up) shut it down, reinsert the SD card and start it up again which forces it to reload the files. A PITA no doubt, but better than having to go home because there are no caches loaded!
  4. Merely stating that there is an elevated pedestrian bridge in the area would not in and of itself represent a hazard, as cache coordinates do not include a z azis The statement is merely meant to point out the fact that it is a pedestrian bridge and not a highway bridge as the OP's bolding might suggest, and not to be a commentary on any "hazard" or "non hazard" of the z axis. Edited to fix some poor quoting by me.
  5. Not being a highway bridge, perhaps "Aunt Edna" need be involved at all as adequate permission may still be good enough in that location? ETA: I can't really speak to the original question about things being different as I've never really looked around my area for caches like this.
  6. The google earth street view shows people walking casually across and a little blue sign with a picture of a parent and child and a bicycle on it, this looks like it is primarily a pedestrian walkway.
  7. Should look like this: GARMIN link Thanks for the link. Hrmm, my "nearest" dashboard has both the compass and the info like that, although it looks totally different. My "active" dashboard looks like this. The list of caches is showing the bubbles with the name and info so it works and the info is there.
  8. Is the 5.20 firmware supposed to display the cache difficulty and terrain, size and type in the Geocaching Active dashboard? It's been a while since I used this unit and I am "sure" that it used to but I am only seeing the cache name now.
  9. this is from an email notification about a feedback item/topic/story/whatever they wish to call it..... Ask us before making changes (No Status) → Declined With all due respect to the global geocaching community, including those who help us pay the bills by financially supporting the site, we will not be submitting future website changes to a community vote. As we move forward, we plan to continue innovating. We will definitely make mistakes but we believe that it is part of the natural innovative process. Regardless of what we do, some people will always argue that the newest feature, update, etc., is a step in the wrong direction and perhaps even foolish or stupid. That said, we reserve the right to do our best to surprise you in a positive way and, fortunately, we can always go back and adjust what we've done to make it better. We know that we have work to do and we are excited to do it. We want you to use geocaching.com and we'll continue doing our best to keep you here. Please keep the feedback coming. Thanks. Bryan Bryan Admin, Geocaching
  10. I am sorry if I am not getting this but what you are saying is that if I manually download the PQs by using Firefox, GC.com sends me a zip file, but, if I use GSAK to download the same queries it actually opens each one, sends me the information for each individual cache, and then recreates a zip file of those caches on my computer?
  11. I had been to this cemetery as a kid and been bored to tears as my father wrote down all the information for various family members. Some 30 years later and I am better able to appreciate the cemetery, and there is a cache there, so this time I dragged him Nothing cool about the gravestones other than they are long gone family.
  12. Has anybody else noticed an issue with the machine occasionally freezing while trying to load a cache description since 5.20?
  13. Does this mean you're getting out the SCUBA equipment to try to recover some benchmarks? :-) There's a lake near a friend's house that was formed when a dam was built, but as far as I know, no one has ever attempted to find the benchmarks that are now under it. I wonder whether any of them would still be findable or whether sediment deposited from the incoming river would have covered them all. By the way, it looks like you're in BC, and I don't know whether the Canadian government offers topographic maps that include survey marks, but here in the States, one can often get more accurate coordinates by looking for marks on USGS topo maps. I've done that for all the 7.5' quads in Yosemite National Park, and have had very good success getting very accurate coordinates for marks whose scaled coords on the NGS data sheets can be off by hundreds of feet or more. Patty LOL The lake behind a dam part is right, but no scuba diving for me, can't even swim but the lake does have lower than normal water levels this year. I'm going to be in the area anyway and it seemed an interesting idea to possibly find one of them, but it doesn't look promising. It looks like the benchmark will still be about 7 feet under, as well, the things used to describe it's location will be either deeper or were torn down before the flooding. Mr Kaswa
  14. Thanks for the replies. I understand that even with the coordinates I could be begining the search several hundred feet off based on scaled coordinates, that's not a problem, and now that it has been brought to my attention I see the notes for hand held in some sheets. I was wondering if perhaps an error had been introduced during the conversion to the gpx file, but looking into it further I see now the subtle difference between the recent datasheet and the one that gc.com displays, and I must admit that I did not expect there would be any difference in the last 11 years on a location that has been underwater for the last 70+ years. The answer would seem to be that I should go with the recent sheets over gc.com, both may scaled coords but the older set would seem to be an extra couple hundred feet off. Mr Kaswa
  15. Hello, I have converted a few data sheets into gpx files by copying into a txt file and converting with NPS>>GPX and then loading them into GSAK. Compared to gc.com's coordinates the converted data sheets would appear to be more likely to be accurate. Is this true, or can they be just as far out as gc.coms? thanks, Mr Kaswa
  16. I had hoped for better but 80 was my limit for embarrassment, whew~~
  17. Got it. Many thanks. Should have remembered that it's a 'standard' thing they do with the URL names there. You are welcome....unless the file causes the device to explode or melt or something, then I deny everything

  19. I've just looked at Groundspeaks rules regarding cache placement and it states: 2.1. Listing Guidelines that Apply to All Geocaches 1.Technical Requirements 1. Listings must contain accurate GPS coordinates. You must visit the geocache site and obtain all the coordinates with a GPS device. GPS usage is an integral and essential element of both hiding and finding geocaches and must be demonstrated for all cache submissions The very next line from this same guideline is, "Projecting waypoints from locations defined by coordinates is permissible."
  20. Seemingly though if you wish to read the logs from oldest to newest you have to now scroll down and down and down, some button to load them all at once might be nice. what do you mean "now"?...the oldest logs have always been at the bottom "page down" works faster than scrolling The 'now' has nothing to do with the order of the logs. it is related to the amount of scrolling one must do "now" just to get earliest logs on the page. Originally it was scroll 5 logs, click additional logs, "End" (works even faster than page down ). "Now" on pages with many logs I get to scroll or hold down the down arrow for possibly hundreds of logs just to get to the first logs. Page Down and End work for a few log loadings but if there are enough logs both keys will eventually actually take me to the end of the page and not load any further logs. ETA: that the other method of clicking a link, the last numbered box, still scrolling through to the oldest log, reading 10 or so, clicking next highest number....repeat is not really a viable option either, though it can indeed get you to the first logs quicker.
  21. Seemingly though if you wish to read the logs from oldest to newest you have to now scroll down and down and down, some button to load them all at once might be nice. ETA: or worse, click a link and then click the largest numbered box, read ten or so logs, click next highest numbered box, repeat until done. The friends logs tab might actually be useful.
  22. Now I can hold the down arrow for 30 seconds to get to the first logs on a cache, why is this better?
  23. But did you get even more excited to see them win against Tonga? 3-0 vs Tonga in the world cup now, and one more win than four years ago....so far!
  24. Sadly this will be all too true. I've always been an All Blacks fan. Wales and Scotland for me! Same
